Hello friends, does anyone know if there is any significance in having a very late interview with Yale? Is Yale a school that considers demonstrated interest via interviews in the admissions process?
In very late March (less than a week ago), I was contacted by someone who said he was my interviewer and that he was asked to submit my interview report relatively soon; i then went through with my interview the day after I got the email (and it was only 30 minutes but I’m really hoping I left a decent impression because I love Yale, but I don’t know if I really expressed interest from my interview).
I know that typically, RD interview reports are due February 15, so I was wondering if this request meant I was borderline. I know not to get too hopeful, and I’m waiting as patiently as I can until the 31, but it would be nice if anyone knew for sure what this meant, or if anyone experienced or heard of something similar. Thanks
@BestSinceHamlet That’s paranoia. Many schools have yearly multiple applicants – some that get rejected and some get accepted. They read each file individually. Past rejects from your school won’t affect you.
@RiemannB The deadline is Feb 15 but Yale pings interviewers for incomplete assignments for weeks to come. I would try not to read anything into this – but there is a possibility that your file (without a interview report) got noticed and the area rep requested an alumni report be filed, if possible – if so, that’s a sign that you’re still under consideration, a good thing!
Yale is literally the only university that interviewed me. Also, I’m in an area where there is very little to no alumns so I had to do it through Skype!
When I had my interview, the interviewer told me that since I got an interview, I was already admitted pretty much and that the interview was just to make sure I wasn’t an asshole (his words, not mine). But I don’t really think I can believe that because Yale’s website says they’re just appointed if available. Does anyone know any truth to this?
@ughoklahoma Before my interview, an alumn gave me interview advice and said that “you won’t be admitted or rejected based on your interview,” but you have just gotten my hopes up! I hope at the least that it means you are favored to be accepted.
@ughoklahoma I am 99.9% sure that what your interviewer said isn’t true. It’s a way for the school to put a face to an application and get to know the applicant on a more ‘face-to-face’ level. I got an interview as well but many qualified applicants don’t get interviewed, plus I was rejected by UPenn ED and they interviewed me.
I wouldn’t want anyone to get their hopes up over false information, especially seeing how selective Yale is. I really wouldn’t take interviews as a sign even if you thought they went well. Good luck though and sorry for being so blunt!
I sent a pretty important update to my regional adcom, but haven’t heard back from her for a couple of days now! Has my application been thrown out already so soon
@ughoklahoma It’s so hard to believe an interviewer would say that! The interviews are assigned randomly, and it means nothing if you’re a domestic student. Yale assigns the interview before they’ve even read your application. You were definitely given wrong information.
Good luck to all of you. As a Yale graduate and a mom of a sophomore, all of this talk about majors is interesting. You know that you have until the end of sophomore year to declare a major. My D started off thinking Classics, but is now wavering between Intensive Literature or German. She did not even speak German before she got to Yale. There is such a breadth of class offerings at Yale that you may find you like something that you have not ever been exposed to. Over 70% of students change from their original major. Only a couple of days! Stay strong!!
