The “likely” letters are not just for people the college is “likely” to admit. If you get the “likely” letter, it means the college really wants you and wants to let you know NOW. They are for students that the college really seek. The candidates are different for different colleges. In the past, I have read for (another) college, it would be for athletes. Yale’s case is different.
Yale also does some likely for STEM kids, for example. I believe there is some general shift happening among colleges that have been interviewing most applicants for decades. They are starting to change how they prioritize interviews and announce acceptances. Yale states they interview applicants they need more information from. Also, other colleges from what I read (so take it with a grain of salt) like Harvard are shifting to just interview applicants that made the first cut, Cornell says the interview is for informational purposes only and has nothing to do with admission. Suppose Duke is following Yale, and they only interview when they need more info from applicants. Columbia doesn’t interview at all?! (I am still determining this). Again, I am just sharing what I have gathered and can not confirm whether it is true.
As of this cycle.
Hey! So Columbia is not offering any interviews in this admission’s cycle?
“Interviews are not a part of the application process.”
Realistically, you should look at how many students got admits to the school from the same class over the last few years. The answer will indicate the chances. One sage has advised that there’s no point crystal balling your chances. It is what it is. You should have applied early action if this were the first choice. All the best in any case!
As other said, they’ve stated in their podcast they don’t have quotas. I am not sure what the ADHD has to do with anything, kudos to that student for overcoming so much to be so successful.
Right? I think it’s not okay to point out someone’s learning challenges to say that somehow someone less deserving got a spot because of that challenge.
I don’t know .
I couldn’t agree more. As the hosts of the YCBK podcast say, you should never assume you know what’s in someone else’s application.
And while it’s probably unlikely that a highly selective school is going to take more than a couple of kids from a high school (unless it’s a typical feeder), they absolutely could take more than one from any school.
Life is full of surprises. Hang in there my friend.
You also denigrated the student from your school who got into Stanford this year REA. Perhaps it’s time you looked at your child’s application vs implying others got in unfairly over your child.
Good advice to worry about your own application only.

Reminder that CC is supposed to be a friendly and welcoming place. Back and forth between two posters needs to be moved to PM. Thank you for understanding.
Does anyone receive a Yale likely letter this year, for RD? Thanks
Did anyone receive email from financial aid office along these lines?
“Thank you for your interest in joining the Yale community!
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions has informed us of your intent to apply for need-based financial aid. We are in the process of reviewing all financial aid applications for completeness and accuracy.”
Also said
“ Your Student Identification number (Yale ID), noted above, should be included in any correspondence. Please note that it is different than the Yale record ID associated with your application for admission.”
Can you send a screenshot?
yes. My understanding is that anyone that asks for need based financial aid receives this.
