Yale-NUS College Class of 2024

Also, does anyone know if Yale-NUS requires a mid-year report? I don’t see a request for one on the portal

@kaikys Impressive stat, I hope you’ll be shortlisted! But since you submitted your app until awhile ago only, perhaps you’re in round 2?

Most of us considered Yale-NUS as our first choice as well, believing in what we’re doing, and I believe it wont fail us! Good luck and all the best for your journey!

ps. Hope you’ve enjoyed Taiwan so far!

@blrcollegekid24 I think we should wait until they ask us for that mid-term report. If not, I suppose they won’t be needing it?

Perhaps a current student can answer us :open_mouth:

@blrcollegekid24 @yich3n Thanks for the comments! I’m extremely nervous and I hope all of us can be shortlisted :’(

I said “a while ago” because I applied only a few days ago hahaha I’m still in the first round since I applied on the 15th, the last day of app.

By the way, did you all send in your TOEFL scores?

@kaikys oh hahahaha then that’s great! I took IELTS, since their website says that language tests are optional, so I’ll not submit it unless they ask from me (cuz it’s not as good as my IB predicted scores :joy: ).

@kaikys Hey! Welcome to the anxiety chat, hahaha!

Your stats are more than fine, in my opinion. I keep telling people that Yale-NUS is one of those schools that is actually holistic when they say that they’re not just about grades.

I have spoken to an alumni from my school who got in with a 1450 SAT and a 4.0 weighted GPA (which is pretty low for my school tbh. I’m guessing at least 1/3 of my grade has a 4.0+ weighted.) She’s Singaporean tho! I’m not sure if that changes anything.

As for the acceptance rate, I think it’s being significantly distorted by people who are neither a good fit nor actually interested in YNC but applied through the Yale app anyway.

Stats and acceptance rates and such are just cold numbers that don’t carry context-- your application is much more than those numbers, and I think YNC acknowledges that. Don’t stress too much, and good luck!

@blrcollegekid24 lol, if it doesn’t help your application and they don’t ask, then forget about it. If you think the mid-year report will help you, then submit it anyway. The worst-case scenario is that they don’t look at it. Doesn’t hurt to throw it in!

And just a random observation, dang, so many MUN kids applying to YNC. I keep seeing it in path threads, with @kaikys @yich3n and @blrcollegekid24 too.

Hi everyone! I am so happy this thread was created, have been waiting a lot for this. I applied early action to Yale and ended up sending my application to yale NUS too (bc why not, right?). This was November 1, I got an interview invitation on November 14th. The interview was really challenging I guess, it was not my best one. I was not hoping to get in and was waiting for Yale decisions (got deferred after all). The funny thing is that today I got an email saying that something in my financial aid application did not match, and this is something that only a person evaluating would perceive. I realized I filled something wrong and just answered their email explaining it. Now I am kinda suspecting I will get in??? I don’t know.

Just to let you know, I only submitted official scores in January. Scores are not that important indeed to them. I am from Brazil, have a 1460 SAT (790 Math and 670 R&W). Subjects are 780 Math II and 700 Physics, I have some Brazilian scientific olympiads awards and medals. My TOEFL is 106. I also only sent the why Yale-NUS essay in January (I think the 14th). I have a friend from Brazil who got into the class of 2022 without the TOEFL and an SAT around 1300 and something. I would also ask you all to not be crying over a 750+ subjects score or 1550- SAT score. It only makes people feel bad about their own score and it shows you don’t actually understand what AOs are looking for (let me tell you: it’s not a perfect score).

Did anyone have an interview already? Or received something about financial aid?

@rh1616 Why did you find the interview challenging? People from previous years seem to agree that interviews are usually pleasant, so your comment on them surprised me.

And out of everyone in this thread only @spinachbrain211 has received an interview invitation so far, maybe you could discuss financial aid with them?

So, differently from the other interviews I had, he already knew a lot about me. He read my personal statement and also had access to my extracurriculars. He always asked me to kind of talk about examples or specific moments or situations (for example, one of my ECs is a women’s college day event founder at my school, so he asked me after I explained that to him how I thought those events were important and wanted me to talk about an specific case of how something has changed after the events). But it wasn’t bad, it was just more like an interview than like a talk.

@spinachbrain211 Yeah my mid-year report isn’t going to help me much I guess, which is why I am hoping I can skip it.
Yep, there are tons of MUN kids, it tends to be one of the most common ECs apparently, which can often make it hard to stick out from the crowd

Anxiety thread is right - this waiting game is killing me.

Regarding language tests - I haven’t taken any of them, and I sent them an email asking about it. They said it was optional so I skipped that bit. I’m hoping that my school grades and SAT score are good enough indicators of my language proficiency. I guess that’s really all they’re looking for - that we are proficient enough in English to cope with all our classes being taught in the language, so I guess it should be fine.

@rh1616 Woah, you’ve already done your interview! Was this a Yale interview or a Yale-NUS interview? Was it a student or AO that conducted the interview?

I’m asking cuz something doesn’t add up in my head— you’re from Brazil, so you had a Skype interview, I’m guessing? What I’ve seen from past years is that online interviews are usually conducted by students, and I’m not sure how they would know so much about your application, since students and alumni aren’t usually allowed to read these confidential application materials. Maybe Yale NUS gave them that access, in which case I’d be learning something new here.

@blrcollegekid24 Mhm, me too. I mean, they will know exactly how well you speak English once they talk to you via the interview, haha. No point in taking the TOEFL just to apply for YNC I guess!!

@spinachbrain211 Hahaha anxiety thread is undoubtably the right word, especially after knowing that they already started to shortlist people. Can I ask when your interview is scheduled for?

@rh1616 I think I read from last year’s thread that some interviewers ask more about substantial stuff… “If there were 5 more hours in a day and if you went back 10 years, do you think your life would change?” is a question I remember. Did you have any questions like these? Or just simply “tell us about you” questions?

@spinachbrain211 Yes, it was the Yale-NUS interview. We had it through skype, and he was a student but he was also from the AO. I think he was a senior in the arts and humanities program. He worked as an admission officer too I guess, and I think he was from Singapore (I am never able to understand things about the interviewer properly haha).

@kaikys The questions were more focused on myself, I guess. He asked a lot about my high school, my friends, academic stuff and also about extracurriculars and plans for the future. I don’t quite remember him asking me about something more random like this, however.

@kaiky It’s tomorrow… nerrrvvoouuusss! They only gave me roughly a 7-day window of available dates. Dates past the 23rd (which is tmr…) were gray and not available for selection. I chose the last available day to allow for more mental preparation haha.

I just got shortlisted!

@spinachbrain211 I am assuming you’ve already done your interview, do you have any advice??

Has anyone from China mainland got the interview from Yale-NUS? Cuz I just submitted that “Why Yale-NUS Essay” yesterday and I’m wondering whether AO will review my essay…(Haha, it’s too late…)

BTW, has anyone who apply in RD round got an interview from Yale?
