I have about a week to decide between my 2 dream schools and I really need some help. I always wanted to go to Cali for college because it always seemed to me like a foreign land and I really wanted to experince that. I have never seen Stanford before and I will be going for the first time this thursday. I really want to clear my mind before I go there because I will be making my final decision in Cali. I went to Yale for bulldog days and I fell in love with it and I liked everything about it. When I told my parents how much i liked it and how im leaning toward going there, their faces lit up and they seemed so happy. I realized they would hate if i go to Stanford. Even if I loved Stanford I have a feeling that I wont be able to sadden my parents especially since they are paying full price for school for me. Do you guys have any advice??? Thank you so much. Also I wish to major in history and classics adn then go to law school.

Some might say that history + classics + law school = Yale.

I would say Yale, also :)

Adding a third voice for Yale. You know, you can always go to law school in California. :)

Speaking as a Stanford parent–go to Yale
(based on what you wrote). And come say hi, I’ll be one of the parent reps at the University Welcome on Friday morning :D.

thanks for the advice. I will most likely be going to Yale. Still I want to see Stanford especially since Stanford Law looks really good right now.

That’s where I went to law school, and I am grateful every day for the experience–awesome school (that was top 3 when I went there and I think is even better now), great climate, wonderful classmates, small class size, terrific opportunities–every top law firm from every city in the U.S. will come to campus to interview. Also public interest firms, judicial clerkships, political internships–. The JD-MBA program is outstanding. And by the time you are ready to go, the new Munger graduate center housing should be ready, which will just add to the experience. Best of luck.

Stanford is in a city that is just like the one I’m from so YALE YALE YALE YALE

…unless you like the ubersuburban environment

I vote for Stanford. I went to the Yale School of Management- the school was fine but I hated New Haven. If you’re from the East Coast - why not try something different. Stanford is so close to San Francisco and so many beautiful areas. New Haven is close to nothing. And the winters in New Haven are bleak. Crime. . . etc. Undergrad I went to Dartmouth - probably more like Stanford than Yale.

First: Congratulations at getting accepted to both Yale and Stanford. Both are very good schools, and you would get a very good education at either school. That being said, I’m sure that your parents would support you if you decided that you like Stanford better. It’s pretty much all about what kind of lifestyle you want to live and where you want to live.

For example, I know that Stanford is very relaxed and easygoing, it’s also pretty quiet. My dad even compared it to a ghost town when we visited. Is that what you prefer? I don’t know much about Yale, but I’ve heard it’s similar to Hogwarts from Harry Potter. Personally, I like Standford better, but this really depends on what you like and dislike.

Anyway, hope this helps. Congratulations again and good luck!

One last thing - I almost forgot - if you want to get into law school later on, you might want to change to an economic major. Just a thought. :)

go west, young man (assumption). Live outside of your comfort zone; you’ll grow much, much more. Also, Stanford has rampant grade inflation (a good thing).

Both are great schools. Think about whether it will bother you to have to deal with airports and long distance travel every holiday and break. Going to school in California means that you can’t go home spontaneously. The travel issue might not matter to you but I thought that I would mention it.

On the other hand, maybe you should take a year off and apply to better schools next year.

I wouldn’t let this influence your decision too much. Our daughter’s at Yale, less than an hour away, and she hasn’t come home spontaneously even once, because she likes being there too much. On the other hand, she does graciously permit us to come up and take her and her friends out to dinner from time to time (we can recommend the Union League Cafe, 500 Blake Street, Sage, and Louis’ Lunch); and being able to drive all your stuff does simplify moving in and out.

I often think the distance from home is a less important factor than is commonly supposed (except for possible “live outside your comfort zone” considerations); if you’re happy at school, your life is likely to focus around campus whether your family is 20 miles away or 2000.

BigGreen, I hope you’re kidding…

hey guys i have awesome news. I went to Stanford and it was love at first sight. As soon as I stepped on campus I knew this is where I belonged. I just sent in my papers today and I am very happy with my choice. Thanks for all your help and advice.

The same thing happened to my son three years ago . We are from the Philadelphia area and he had to choose between East Coast schools and Stanford. He had never visited Stanford until Admit Weekend and it was love at first sight for him, too. Good luck at Stanford - I know you will have a wonderful time!
PS - Hopefully, your parents will have fun visiting you at Stanford at least occasionally, so don’t feel too sorry for them :)

Stanmaster–congrats on making a decision that couldn’t have been wrong whichever way it went. Now you can go to Yale for law school–I hear it is even better than Stanford ;). Hope you are very happy in college and beyond.

Congratulations, Stanmaster.

(And ignore the advise someone gave you about changing your major because of law school. Major in whatever you like.)
