Yale Parents thread

A comment on the “screw” dances. This is not really a sexual reference; rather, the reference is to the opportunity to “screw” your roommate by setting him/her up with a bad blind date. However, mostly the students try to set their roommates up with somebody they think would work out.

Well, Hunt, maybe sometimes the secondary reference is sexual :).

My son has been on iirc 5 screw dates so far. Every matchup has reflected careful thought on the part of the roommates who set them up, and everyone had a good time. I had my doubts when I first heard about it, but once again the kids at Yale surprised me to the upside.

ETA: knock wood, don’t want to jinx it :)

While the Freshman Screw has not happened yet, the JE Screw happened last weekend. The kids had a ball. My freshman D was set up with a senior who she has a crush on. She was mortified that her suitemates asked him. He was a good sport and went. She said they all had a “group date” and later in the night the seniors left. The freshman continued to party. She thought it was great. Definitely not something we did during my time there.

Ironically, I just got a text from my D that she was invited to the Morse Screw.

@Tperry1982, that’s interesting. Iirc, your daughter is already in her residential college. I get the sense that there is less interaction between the classes on Old Campus. Pluses and minuses, I’m sure.

No, she is a freshman on Old Campus like your son. Her suitemates thought it would be funny to set her up with a senior who happens to be friends with their FroCo so he is always around on Old Campus. She does have quite a bit of interaction with seniors between the step team, writing for the Boola (which is the Yale Blog) and being a member of the board that is coordinating the Yale Solidarity Conference in the Spring. She is quite the busy bee - cause there actually is some school work going on.

My son’s college Saybrook had their screw about a month ago, and they had a lot of fun

Discussions are ongoing about the calendar for next year. Apparently since Labor Day is later, the whole schedule is pushed back. It has only been online for a few weeks. No one wants finals as late as December 23. <a href=“Provisional 2015-’16 calendar draws criticism - Yale Daily News”>http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2014/11/12/provisional-2014-15-calendar-draws-criticism/

That happened one year when my daughter went to Yale and she came home December 23. Airfare is frightfully high when you get that close to Christmas. It also meant no time to shop or participate in events that happen around the holidays.

So can any experienced parents give advice on what graduation weekend is like? We’ve got rooms, but am wondering what people do for meals. Are there events most evenings? Do I need to be thinking about dinner reservations now? I have a hotel reservation already (haven’t heard anything about on-campus housing; should I have?)

Not sure if your DS picked his boots up yet, I completely forgot about the LL Bean outlet store about 2 towns over. They have all things winter there. The sales rep mentioned that the boots are on back order in the catalog. The outlets store shelves are replete with them.

It’s quite chilly here now. If they are headed to Cambridge for the game on Saturday, it’s even colder there! And the stadium is pretty darn close to the river.

@NewHavenCTmom‌

Thank you so much. He hasn’t bought any boots yet and he’s not going to the game cause he’s flying to warmer FL that same day:) But I can tell you that while he’s here we’ll do some shopping and I’m sure some online shopping to be delivered there. This cold weather came in too soon and it’s not even winter yet!

Haven’t heard anything about on-campus accommodations yet, either, @donnaleighg, and I don’t have any hotel reservations…

@scoutsmom I made reservations in Milford at the Hampton; double the usual rate, but still only a third or so what the in-town places were charging. And I can cancel if we decide to stay on-campus. I have an elderly father, so it’s not a simple decision.

How many of the parents here have their S or D on FA who are in their sophomore of higher years?

My sophomore D is on Financial Aid. Our income went up some, so did tuition. FA went down some.

My son is a senior at Yale and is on financial aid. Like musicmerit, our income went up slightly in 2013, so our FA went down slightly for 2014. Why the question @Saona63?

I know it’s probably too early but as I’m getting ready to send Spring payment I was wondering how consistent was Yale with their FA offer in subsequent years. Thank you

If your income in 2014 was the same as 2013, then your FA should remain the same for 2015-2016 school year. If your income drops, you should receive more aid. If your income rises, you will receive less.
