@fro123 I had not seen this. Im not sure that my daughter did either. I am glad it was posted.
@Tperry1982 - I do not blame you directly for covering anything up maybe I chose my words poorly. But I disagree that it has “nothing to do with Yale”. She was a student there , while not currently enrolled, but she was known on campus, had friends there, the info about her death did come from Dean Holloway. It had a lot to “do” with Yale. I am not trying to say that Yale is in any way responsible , mental illness is. Like I wrote before - we need to demystify mental illness. Because of those two deaths I found out about the controversial Withdrawal and Readmission Policy. It is controversial (I am not saying it is wrong) because it results in kids not reporting their anxieties and depression.
Not sure how to gracefully do this given the serious nature of the recent posts…but on a completely unrelated matter…
Now that the Harvard Yale game is within a few weeks, my daughter is figuring out her plans. I think it is a bit more logistically challenging for kids who must fly home versus drive or take the train.
Did your kids spend Friday and/or Saturday night in Boston (or are they planning on it)? Did they come home Saturday night or Sunday morning straight from Boston?
She will figure out her plans but it’s good to know what others are doing or have done.
@Faulkner1897 It varies – there’s no set way to do it. The one year I was in Cambridge for The Game, I flew out of Boston on Sunday as to not make Saturday a rush. However, a late Sat flight would be acceptable too.
@Faulkner1897 , during freshman year, DS planned to take the bus back to Yale and be picked up there by car. After typical bad planning, he and a classmate were picked up in Boston.
This year, having developed much better planning skills, he and his GF plan on spending a night with H friends, a night at an AirBnB, and flying directly home on Monday morning. We have been requested to go directly to his favorite diner from the airport :).
This kind of planning is referred to by kids as “adulting,” and I find its unexpected emergence to be one of the pleasant “parenting” surprises of the year. This probably belongs on the bragging thread, but this semester, DS will have gone to CA twice, SLC once, and NYC numerous times, all planned and executed without parental involvement. If you knew my son, this ranks up there with the Pyramids
Somehow they managed to get plane tickets for <$50 when reserved seats on the train, even coach, were >$120. He said that the combination bus to Yale and Metro North could have been done for ~$40.
Something that my kid reminded me of when I helped her make plans to return from Boston (Im just driving up to get her) is that tickets are limited due to the size of the stadium. She said it is possible that she might not go at all. You might want to keep that in mind while making plans.
@Faulkner1897
My son is taking a flight right after the game. He’s taking it with two of his teammates so hopefully between the three of them they get to the airport and on the plane. Haven’t decided which one of us, hubby or myself, will be the lucky one to meet them at the airport at yawn 1 am!
This should be interesting…
Thanks for the heads up, @Memmsmom.
My son is staying in Boston Friday night and Saturday night and then driving back to NH. Since he had a car this year I didn’t really need advance planning. Last year we booked a train home on Monday because he wasn’t sure if kids hung out on campus after the game.
My kid missed out on getting a game ticket last time too. But she still had fun. She traveled to H on Friday with her EC group and they had a good time. She took a train home to our house on Sunday from New Haven. She could just take a small bag to H. Then go back to campus to get a bigger bag for the week at home.
DS reports having been heckled in a nasty way in New Haven recently, something that he had never encountered before. Of course, drunks had done it before in a drunken, easy to ignore way, but he thinks these were sober townspeople who were emboldened by the election. Anyone else’s kids experience this?
@IxnayBob
So far I haven’t heard anything like that reported. Sorry your kid experienced that. Pretty crappy and ridiculous of people but given the political climate I’m not surprised. The comment section of YDN has been filled with sarcastic and rude comments about the students. Speaks volumes about the character or lack thereof of those commenting.
Well, Yale students have been getting bad press lately for asking to get out of work because they were upset. Consider the dining hall employees who also may have been upset. They had to get up and work anyway. This may be more of a class issue than a political issue. It looks like New Haven largely voted the same way politically.
Son want to get a learner’s permit and DL while at Yale. Any recommendations for local/convenient driving school?
Parents who are applying for FA for continuing students- website says applications are due February 1st. My question is are you at a disadvantage if you don’t file right away? Or conversely, do you have a better chance the sooner you file?
tonymom, FA doesn’t get awarded to the order of the applications. I’m sure the deadline is an administrative thing. Completeness and accuracy are what’s important – not racing to get docs in early. Don’t put undue pressure on yourself.
@tonymom No, and No. From the website: “If you miss the application deadline, your award may be processed after the term bill is due…late fees will be charged for term bills paid after the due date. However, you are still eligible for financial aid, and your award will not be reduced because of late submission…” Filing the 2017-2018 application by Feb 1 should be easy for parents of continuing students who are currently receiving financial aid, as the information you need is pretty much the same as what you provided last year when applying for the 2016-2017 school year: 2015 Tax Returns and 2016 guesstimates. As Yale required IRS data retrieval or tax transcript verification last year, that should be a snap, as you’ve already done that for the relevant 2015 tax year. Haven’t looked at the forms yet, and not sure if they ask for 2017 guesstimates, but either way, it shouldn’t prove that challenging.
@tonymom … some schools have a ‘Le Mans/Hunger Games’ start to FA. Not Yale. @T26E4 is right… accuracy and completeness are key.
YDN reported that early applications are up by 9% this year: http://yaledailynews.com/blog/2016/11/15/early-applications-increase-by-9-percent/
@prof2dad that is what I suspected would happen. With all of the talk that there would be more accepted, it makes sense that people would equate that to mean that they might have a greater chance. Unfortunately all those additional applications will ultimately mean more competition. I would not be surprised if this ultimately means there is actually a lower acceptance rate this year.
