Just one week later and she would have been great… the Flu has hit campus. My kid has been sent to bed for the last few days of the week. Of course she is still considering taking her exam on Friday although she has a deans excuse from it. What really stinks is she actually got the flu shot this year and still got sick. I feel bad for her.
Sorry to hear that @Memmsmom. Hope she recovers quickly. Any feel for how widespread it is on campus?
@Memmsmom Feel bad for your D. It appears that the flu season this year is kind of early.
@Memmsmom - hopefully the shot will help keep her flu to a milder case. I had a miserable case even with the shot several years ago. Sometimes, it just doesn’t work. I got unlucky that year, but the rest of my family managed to stay healthy all around me. Go figure. Even though everyone was in really close quarters on vacation together. Wishing her a speedy recovery. Tell her to take it easy!!
Aww, the dreaded illness just before exams. Wishing her fast recovery. It might actually be helpful, that kids will disperse after this Friday, so maybe a major epidemic can be averted? Are you 100% positive that it is flue @Memmsmom ?
Question to seasoned parents: is it easier to get the tickets for the game when it is played at Yale? This year DD was only after one ticket, but she did send us a picture of the line and it was HUGE . Next year we are hoping to join her for that game , I am just planning in advance Any advice is greatly appreciated, as always !
Havard Stadium seats 30K whereas Yale Bowl seats 61K. It’s not hard to get tickets for The Game in New Haven.
@Memmsmom
That bites!!! Poor kiddo. Do you think it was the flu vaxs itself?
I’ve worked with kids for over 18 years and I’ve only got the flu vaccine once and have had the flu maybe a total of five times but now that I’ve typed this the cosmic universe will put me in my place…
Hope she gets better soon so she can enjoy the break!
Toad’s or Mory’s? Is membership worth it and would it be a good holiday gift?
@tonymom, Toad’s Place is a music venue - no memberships, just tickets to shows. Mory’s is a Yale tradition - a clubhouse dating to the 1840s which is principally a restaurant and bar, with private rooms for parties (see morysclub.org) where the a cappella groups often perform in the evenings. Students can join for a $15 payment that covers them through graduation and carries a $10 food credit.
A couple of notes about The Game: Not only is Harvard’s stadium much smaller, it also has a lot of lousy seats with obstructed views. For parents, I wouldn’t advocate going to the game when it’s in Cambridge unless you have a kid who is playing or performing (ie in YPMB, or a cheerleader, maybe). In New Haven, it’s a much different story–it still pays to get tickets well in advance, so you can get a parking pass before they sell out. However, somebody mentioned joining their kid for the Game when it’s at Yale–you probably aren’t going to sit with your kid, because he or she is going to want to sit in the student section with friends. You might want to arrange with some other parents to buy tickets together so you’ll have a group to sit with.
@DeepBlue86
So is this a place students actually hang out at or more a parent or alum spot?
@tonymom, re memberships and such. DS went to Toads every now and then as a freshman; I don’t think he’s set foot in there his junior year. The kids change, dare I say grow up? Afaik, Toads doesn’t have membership, but more generally, I’d be aware that they are changing their preferences all the time.
Thanks everyone for your concern. She definitely has the flu. She was tested for it and was sent to bed for the rest of the week by Yale Health. She is at least trying to eat today. She has pretty much slept for the last 48 hours. So far her professors and TA’s have been great. I think she is still going to try and take the exam tomorrow but only because the rule is that you can drop one and if she sleeps through it, that ends up being the one dropped by default. She said she might as well try if that is the case. If she bombs it, she would be dropping it anyhow.
She hasn’t said if anyone else is sick. She has been asleep though and hasn’t really been out much. I have her friends reporting to me with their check ins. She said she was going to try and eat chicken for lunch. That is a big step from barely eating miso soup yesterday. We will see how tomorrow goes.
@tonymom Toads is a night club that also has bands on occasion. Mory’s is cool to see the oars hanging above and the old wood but to be honest it is pricey for what it is and the food wasn’t really that great if you are just eating there. They treat the kids well but not many go there just to eat. I bought my daughter a membership so we can eat there when we watch her sing there but I only really went twice last year (both times to hear her sing). Its neat and worth paying for if you are coming for a visit but I doubt he wold use it much. I am sure there are other things he would rather get as a gift.
Have any of your kiddos used dentists in the New Haven area? Just for regular check-up and its possible aftermath.
@tonymom, agree with @Memmsmom. I don’t think students tend to spend much time at Mory’s, but since it costs almost nothing for them to join these days and it’s definitely atmospheric, you might want to get him a membership and have him take you there.
Okay the new Handsome Dan XVIII is the cutest Handsome Dan EVER!!!

@Hunt - thanks for the info about the game ! Comes summer we shall form an unofficial "Parents attending 2017 Harvard - Yale game "group and try sitting together
@Memmsmom - glad your daughter has lots of support from friends and teachers ! The last thing she needs to worry about is school. Did you look for a local place that would deliver a good chicken soup / pho to campus? I would be interested in learning more about it. I believe strongly in lemon infused water and spicy chicken soup as a remedy for colds and flu.
It sounds to me like Toad’s is more for above 21 crowd?
@oldladyandmom - cutest puppy ever! Can’t wait to meet him ! I shared this cuteness on fb .
@classicalmama - my kids still go to our family dentist for a check up when they visit from school. But if there needs to be a follow up appointments, tendency for cavity - I would definitely look into a local dentist.
DD will be arriving home for Thanksgiving Sunday evening. She was hoping to hit the slopes right away, but so far we hardly had any snow, so I guess it will be hiking . She is really, really happy to be able to come home and spend a few nights in her own bed ! Thursday was her second math midterm, so she is flying back with light wings. I will only have a couple of days with her since I am flying to Europe for my mother’s 80th birthday bash, but when I think about it - it might actually be a good thing
Wanted to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving ! Eat good food, drink good wine, go for a lovely walk / hike, and enjoy your families. This is the best we have , our families and our friends .
Since next year is my D’s senior year, some classmates of mine (Class of 82), one who also has a 2018 graduate, will be throwing an epic tailgate party. I’m talking grilling, wine, cheese - everything. Planning on schlepping it all up in our Yukon. So, any parents from CC who will be there, we’ll connect before then and I’ll invite you to stop by for some libations!!
