Yale University Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

yeah i got it

Hi, I’m new to this thread. Did you email the general admissions through the portal? I’m also waiting for some updates that I can possibly add before submitting loci, but I saw that someone said Feb was too late? Any idea when committee would start reviewing deferred applications?

The Yale Admissions Podcast said mid-February or even the beginning of March was not too late:

MARK: And one final note for students who are deferred, just because I think this is the most common question we get around the end of December and beginning of January is, OK, I’m a deferred applicant, what do I do?

HANNAH: Right.

MARK: And there’s really two action items. The one is required, which is make sure we get your mid-year school report.

HANNAH: Yes.

MARK: So we want to see if you are still enrolled in your senior year of high school. That you’ve been continuing to do well in your classes. So make sure we get some record of your first term, semester, trimester, whatever it is. Those first grades that are available, we will want to have those when we’re reviewing your application and regular decision.

The second piece is optional. If you have new information, essentially like breaking news that’s just happened in your life between November 1 when you applied and let’s say the middle of February or beginning of March, you can put together one nice, concise application update. Use your portal to send it together just to give us the latest and greatest. You don’t need to go back into your drawers and essentially say, what are the things I didn’t include in the application from five years ago that I should have put in there? I’ll just start throwing things at the wall now.

HANNAH: Right. Do not do that.

MARK: But we know that your life continues to move along. So if there’s new awards or accomplishments or a project has taken on a new dimension since you put that application together in the fall, you can let us know about it.

I’ve used the feature before, and had to use it to submit my mid year report. It works they do respond afaik.

Thanks for this. I also saw this but I wasn’t sure how updated this info was? It would be good if we can still submit in mid/late Feb.

Thanks. Did you say you got confirmation from them to submit loci by latest mid-Feb?

So that was from Episode 27, their update for the 2022-23 cycle. Obviously we are in the 2023-24 cycle, so possibly it has changed.

But personally, I would not worry about that. I think they are pretty consistent in trying to let people know if something they said in a prior podcast is no longer valid, and that timeline makes sense with how they discuss their internal process. Basically, their regional admissions committees are probably not reconsidering deferrals before then anyway, as they have to get through all the initial phases with the RD applications.

yep, asked them

Hi, so my non costodial waiver was sent in november!! I checked my portal randomly today and saw that 1/25 I got another x mark on my fin aid checklist because it says a process is now required for my noncustodial waiver. My waiver hasn’t been approved since EA, what should I do?

Call financial aid and ask a staff person.

I did today just now. They were very aggressive and rude. They were like, ā€œwell, you were deferred not acceptedā€ and ā€œwhat if you got placed on the waitlistā€ and ā€œyou need to stop being impatient and wait this is a separate process and there has been no action on your file.ā€ i simply asked when my non custodial waiver will be processed and they responded like that. I know someone who applied RD and their form was already processed. All of my financial forms have taken several months to process. I’m happy I was deferred.

I have to say this week feels a bit discouraging. I have been reading all these posts about RD applicants getting likely letters from Yale this week. I just read a post about a student who did not sound like a STEM applicant who got a likely letter. Suppose the AO liked the child’s essay.
We kind of knew that only RD would get the likely letters, but it seems now we have been in this whole process ā€œforever.ā€ My child applied in Sep, then Dec deferred to RD, and now waiting for the decision day in March. It stings a little that RD gets to hear before deferred applicants. Is anyone else feeling this? I am trying to stay positive!

LL are not exclusive to STEM, but they tend to be somewhat niche (outstanding musician for example).

It may seem like a lot for now, but really only a fraction of admits get likely letters.

The Yale podcast said about 200/yr, I assume they aren’t including athletes in this number, but that’s not really clear.

And in the name of transparency, we’ll say there’s no set number of these that we give out in any given year, but it tends to be around 200 or so of the 2,300 or so total offers of admission that we will send out in a given year and they are almost all going to go to applicants with backgrounds or profiles that we think that our peer institutions– and by the way, that’s sort of higher ed speak for competitors, the other schools that tend to admit great students like we do– we think that these students are likely to be admitted by those other schools and that they’re going to be keen on responding to their applications as well.

That was episode 14, here are all the transcripts, so you have to search: https://admissions.yale.edu/podcast-transcripts

So for all the deferreds out there, I just found out one of the ones at our HS got the Morehead-Cain Scholarship at UNC.

So that is pretty solid company to be in . . . .

That’s awesome!! Does anyone have info or stats on the deferred admit rate?

This is what they said in the Yale Admissions Podcast (after they changed their policy to defer a lot fewer people):

So that’s another question we get from students who’ve been deferred. They say, hey, what are my chances? And we’ve generally found that these students do about as well or even maybe a little bit better just from a pure numbers standpoint in terms of the admissions rate as our regular decision students.

So we do find every single year there are dozens of students who are deferred from early action who are admitted in regular decision. We were cautious the first time around, and then at the end of the day, they really did emerge. We hoped that they would, and they did. And then we go ahead and say, sounds great. We’re happy to admit you through regular decision.

Of course Yale necessarily has a very low RD admission rate, so doing only a little bit better than that still implies a very low admissions rate. That is consistent with the number of deferred who are accepted being in the ā€œdozensā€ and not say the hundreds. Like hypothetically, suppose a little bit better meant around 6-7%. They deferred almost 1600 out of REA, so maybe that would be 100-110 deferred-accepted. That is plausibly ā€œdozensā€.

But the actual information is not that precise. And for that matter, it may vary year to year, and specifically may vary this year because of the Supreme Court decision or other factors.

@NiceUnparticularMan - Curious if you know whether that student has committed to the M-C or is waiting to see if they get into Yale RD?

My understanding is they are waiting to hear from Yale and at least a couple other colleges before deciding.
