for OOS it’s really difficult to get in, but your SAT and GPA are straight, and you seem to have good extracurriculars, so I know you’ll be competitive against other applicants but for OOS it’s hard to tell, you should definitely apply and the fact that you have relatives who attended only helps your cause

I think its a match or a high match. Your sats and GPA are good enough, but you’re out of state so thats a strike against you. However, since your uncle went there, they will probably look at your file closer ( I dont think your godfather matters). So just keep your grades up, and goodluck.

Only when father or mother are UVA graduates can you be considered a legacy. An uncle doesn’t do you any good. At 1st look you have a very slim chance. You need to post your rank and whether you took the hardest curriculum at your school.

6 AP’S by the end of senior year, top 10% of class (My school doesn’t rank), and my classes have either been honors or AP my whole highschool career.

Applying to UVA as an OOS applicant is anyone’s guess. My D just finished the process, and she will be starting UVA this fall. She has a somewhat similar background (OOS, VERY rigorous/ranked private prep school). There were a handful of applicants who applied from her school; 3 were accepted. She had straight A’s, 12 APs (all 5s thus far), 2250 SAT I, and numerous ECs. The other two who were accepted also had straight A’s. (Actually, I think one may have had a B or possibly 2.) Their SAT’s were comparable (2210 and 34 ACT). Those who weren’t accepted were great students (NHS); however, they didn’t have the 4.0 nor did they have above 2200 (2100 or there about). I don’t know if this is why they weren’t accepted or not – again, it’s anyone’s guess. They looked great on paper, though, and will be going to good, solid schools where I’m certain they’ll be quite happy.

I remember last spring reading a thread on this board after decisions were released. There were OOS applicants with 2300+ SATs and straight As who were waitlisted! I suppose my point is that you should most definitely try but make certain to have a variety of other schools on your list. Good luck! We never would have thought our D would be a Wahoo, but God directed her to UVa – as cliche as it might sound, “If it’s meant to be, it will be.”

You’ll have a shot, but no guarantees. The odds are against you as an OOSer. You need to raise both your GPA (even if it’s unweighted) and SATs. I’m telling you, those are the first things they look at. I’m in-state, and I’ve spoken with many admissions officers. You definitely are a very competitive applicant, but it’s a tough admissions process for OOS. Good luck!

I got a likely letter out-of-state
and these were my basic stats

2200 SATs (700 CR 780 M 720 W)
GPA: 3.95 UW 4.65 W
Rank: 4th/568
ACT: 34
APs: Calc BC - 5
APUSH - 5
Psych - 5
Chem - 5
World History - 5
Spanish Lang - 5
SAT IIs: Math II - 760 or 780, can’t remember, think it was 760. Chem 720, US History 710

However, my bestfriend applied as well, and he was probably top 40 out of 560 or whatever, 4.2 or 4.3 gpa, 3.8 UW, 2160 SATs, 32 ACT and was an Eagle Scout, on ASB, starting varsity Volleyball player for 3 years on a team that won the regional playoffs twice, and he was rejected, so it’s pretty competitive.

I think what got me in was my essays to be perfectly honest. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I’ve been told I’m a pretty funny guy, and I wrote about how I don’t even want to go to college and I’d rather do stand-up comedy in all my essays, and I got a likely letter from UVa, Regents Scholar at UCLA/Cal, preferred Admission at Ross (UMich), and waitlisted then accepted at Harvard. But then again, I guess it could just be my stats. Who knows.
