Hi all… since I know we have plenty of appliance nerds on here I’m hoping you all can help me out.

I’ve been thinking that my oven isn’t right for awhile now… for example, Something that should take say 20 minutes to cook winds up taking 30… or more…

Today I was cooking something that was steaming in the oven and you could literally see the steam coming right up through the seams at the top of the oven where the glass flat top meets the metal/plastic (whatever it is?) stove molding? Don’t know how to explain it. So basically, I found my heat leak!

I’m assuming it’s not worth trying to fix this and I should probably just get a new stove?

It has to be electric as I don’t have gas or anything here. I’d like another glass flat top like I have now because they are easy to clean.

Also, my kitchen appliances are the bisque color which makes it a little bit more difficult to shop for. I’d like to keep with the same theme.

Has anyone seen anything lately that meets this criteria? I do have a best buy credit card which I could use for free financing if anyone can recommend anything from there. I’d rather it not cost too much but obviously it’s going to be more then 500 bucks.

My new whirlpool stove cost $640 I think. It was not the bottom model, but was the next one up. It is a flat top electric with a warming area. The bottom oven element is hidden under the floor of the oven. It has both conventional oven cleaning, and steam cleaning. I’ve had it for a couple of months and I really like it. It replaces a 19 year old bottom of the line whirlpool flat top.

I believe they make it in bisque…not 100% sure…but I think so.

There was a GE I liked also. And it would have won but the top ledge was NOT flat (and my collection of salt and pepper shakers would have slid off). The GE had the same features, but the oven racks were ceramic, so when you cleaned the oven, you left them in and cleaned them too! I really liked it…and it was exactly the same price as the whirlpool.

due to your color requirement, you may have to do some home work before go shopping. First find out the make and model that has that color you wanted and go to an appliance specialty store(ie, home depot) to order, no one will carry that color in stock.

There are two on best buys website - one GE, one Whirlpool. The GE looks nicer the the whirlpool but I’d be hesitant to buy one considering that’s what mine is right now.

Glad, the steam was coming out the top of the oven, in the back. Where the flat top meets the back of the stove. opposite side of the Oven door.

I probably wouldn’t have noticed it if not for cooking something inside that was steaming. I’ve known something wasn’t right for awhile though and couldn’t quite figure it out. A pizza that should take 15 minutes takes about 24 to cook. Chicken breasts that should be done in about 20 minutes take about 35… things like that.

Once I saw the steam coming out i just put two and two together and thought to myself that must be where my heat is escaping. Would that be a fair assumption?

I wouldn’t mind fixing it if the fix is cheap enough. I’m not sure how you’d even do this kind of fix.

By the way…I did not buy my stove at the big box stores. I went to a local appliance dealer…and they were much more helpful. I would suggest you try that. I did some price comparing…the big box was going to charge me for delivery, taking my old range away, and the power cord for the new range. The local appliance store ended up costing less because they didn’t charge for all the things.

I don’t know, it came with the house… and I’ve been here about 5 years. It doesn’t look that old. It has a digital thermostat with buttons that you push to make the numbers go up and down. I guess that doens’t necessarily mean anything since I had a car from the 80’s with a digital dash. There are no knobs anywhere on it. I’d venture a guess that it’s less then 10 years old but who knows, I thought my toilet was new and the inspector told me otherwise - lol.

Don’t think in terms of time, think in terms of heat. Put an oven thermometer (or two since they’re not so accurate either) in it and see how the temps compare. You can see how far off it is.

Did this suddenly change or was it perhaps always like this?

Apparently there’s usually an adjustment you can do if you just need to go up 35 degrees or so but I’ve never done one. This would be free so that’s a good price.

I just started to notice it a few months ago but BF has been insisting that it hasn’t been right for quite some time… My thought is that it probably hasn’t been right for awhile but that it’s gotten worse recently to the point that i’m noticing it (I don’t oven cook all that often). I’ve always had to add a few minutes onto cookies. What I started noticing is that you’d put in a pizza and go to get it and it wouldn’t be done, then would have to add on at least 5 minutes. i pre-heated then cooked 4 chicken breasts tonight at 400 and it took 35 ish minutes. At that temperature they should be ok in about 20 or so.

I’ll have to try that test - thank you for the link! If it helps, that would be much cheaper then a new oven!

Buy an oven thermometer and then google the repair manual. I’ll bet you can fix this with a $10 thermometer. Unless you really are wanting a new stove, in which case it’s hopeless…haul it to the curb and call Goodwill. (insert that winky thing I can’t do)
