<p>Now that I have decided to get the kids Kindles for Hanukkah, my dilemma is where to purchase them. Now that Target and soon Best Buy and Staples have the Kindle, I can not decide if I should buy locally or stick with Amazon.</p>
<p>With Amazon there will be no sales tax, but I might have a longer return period at Target, especially if they allow the extended return for Christmas gift. Unfortunately, Hanukkah is very early this year, December 1. Since the kids will be home for Thanksgiving, we decided to give them their gift then. That might be too early for the extended returns at Target and I read somewhere that Target will only take back new in the box.</p>
<p>If I order from Amazon, I am thinking I should order this week; I have a fear of them running out for the holidays, although that could happen at Target also.</p>
<p>Amazon is really good about returns. I had a battery charging problem with my 6 month old Kindle 2. When I called they looked up my purchased, sent me a replacement (I got it the next day) and had me return my broken Kindle in the box they sent my replacement. I vote for Amazon, and you can get free shipping.</p>
<p>Amazon was always my first choice; just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing a valid reason to buy at Target. I try my hardest not to purchase electronics at Best Buy if it can be avoided, but my Target is convenient and returns are pretty painless!</p>
<p>If you decide to purchase it at Target, just make sure you know exactly what their return policy is on electronics. I’ve run into problems with this. Sometimes it’s as little as two weeks and sometimes they will only allow exchanges.</p>
<p>I purchase stuff from Amazon at least once a month. Never had a problem with returns. Absolutely love my kindle - have had it for 18 months, not problems at all. I’ve asked son if he would be interested in one but he said no. :(</p>
<p>Definitely double-check Target’s return policy if youi are still considering buying there. I think of them as having a liberal returns policy but when I returned something (not electronic) last night, I noticed stringent rules regarding electronics returns that I don’t recall having noticed before.</p>
<p>After reading posts about the Kindle, I’m thinking about getting my kids Kindles for Christmas. Could someone please advise me about the different kinds, i.e. 3G, DX etc? Also, do any of you think that Kindles might go on sale on Black Friday? Any input is much appreciated.</p>

Got it for Christmas last year at $249, LOVE it.</p>
<p>My understanding is that the $189 current model will have 3G allowing you to connect anywhere for internet and purchasing content.
The cheaper $139 has wifi only so connecting could be more difficult in some geographic areas?

Not sure about the Black Friday thing. I know I just received an email coupon for Staples that carries the Kindles now, pretty sure it said it could not be used on Kindles.</p>
<p>I was reading there may be a shortage of Kindles for xmas. I will see if I can find that blog post for you. The 3G uses the cell phone towers for internet access where as with the WiFi version you must have wireless access to download books. I have a Kindle 2 which has 3G and love the fact that I can download a book almost anywhere. I have so many unread books on my Kindle that it probably wouldn’t matter if I had 3G or WiFi, but I like the fact that I am not dependent on WiFi. I don’t know much about the DX</p>
<p>I have the Kindle2 with 3G. I love the 3G feature and wouldn’y buy a Kindle without it. I believe the DX is a much larger version of the Kindle with better .pdf readability. For most people, the Kindle is probably more convenient to carry around than the DX.</p>
<p>I’ve been jonesing for a Kindle 3 because it’s slightly smaller than the Kindle 2.</p>

<p>Another thought - definitely buy a cover for the Kindles to help protect it from breakage. . I have the black leather one Amazon sells but I know there are many others out there.</p>
<p>Ohh, thanks for the link. I’m so glad I asked. I’ll go with the 3G then and I’ll get the cases also. Should I pick up battery chargers and (pardon my ignorance) how does one purchase the books? I mean, do the Kindles have cards like the I-Tune cards? I really appreciate all your help. These Kindles are great!</p>
<p>You can buy them Amazon gift cards they can use to buy the books or link them to your Amazon account and it will just be charged to your CC. I will also post links for two blogs (one of which I already posted) which lists free books being offered daily. The Kindle will come with a charger you can plug into your computer or the wall. I have an extra one for my computer at work and one I use in my car. The car charger was really cheap, I will see if I can remember where I got it.</p>
<p>I’d just like to mention that, if you keep your wireless turned off except when you are downloading books, the battery lasts a long time. Mine usually lasts about 10-14 days, and I read an average of an hour/day.</p>
<p>So unless you plan to use the Kindle for long stretches of time without a computer or outlet available for charging, the car charger is unnecessary.</p>
<p>I prefer my Kindle to be naked when I read, so instead of the case sold on Amazon I put a skin on my Kindle (some protection, mostly decoration) and use a neoprene sleeve to protect it when I’m carrying it around in my bag or purse. I bought the sleeve for $5 on ebay.</p>
