Yet another Kindle question!

Just had to stop in for just a minute. The kids were arguing about the advantage and disadvantage of owning a Kindle. The argument was interesting, but what happened next was great. My husband walked into the closet where I had hidden away the Kindles and handled them to the kids. They both shut up and laughed; well my daughter was upset the gift was not wrapped and it wasn’t Hanukkah yet, but she accepted it happily. That said, she did put it away as she said, we haven’t had Thanksgiving yet and that comes before Hanukkah. I am sure tomorrow it will be out with a few books loaded. My son that didn’t want one, has already made a family Amazon account, as we all have our own with a new email address.

snowball - Nice! I am glad they liked them.

I was telling my SIL about the $89 Kindle 2 on sale for BF and how I wanted to try and get one for S. 10yo dd overheard and asked “what about me?” I hadn’t thought about getting her one because she is into having things like the IPad with all kinds of bling and bells and whistles. Now I may try to buy her one also.

Thanks CC Kindle fans, you convinced me to buy late last night- $139- hope that Wifi connection is easy to set up.
Any other helpful hints for newbie, much appreciated.

You know the kid that did not want a Kindle? When I got up this morning he informed me he really likes the Kindle. Seems he has already downloaded all the Harry Potter books for free in PDF. I am not sure how legal this downloads are, but he is one happy camper. At the moment he is at the gym with his Kindle.

Well, I sat on line and clicked the deal the second it showed and did not make it. Don’t know what you had to do to get one. I could not have been sooner. Maybe they only had a few as a teaser.

I was also unable to get the Kindle. I will bet a lot of them show up on ebay soon. I am now thinking I might get the Kindle 3 with WiFi and 3G for son. Hate to spend the money, but I do think he will enjoy it.

I was also poised to click the second it appeared and didn’t get one. I wonder how many they had.

Do not feel bad.

I was ready with three computers and none of them came through. Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise as spending the extra $50 dollar for the newer Wi-Fi version might be a good idea.

Thanks to this site, somehow I clicked and scored! I’ve been on the fence about getting one and my kids said it will become obsolete with the advent of the ipad, but $89 was a deal I couldn’t pass up. I’ll let you know how it works out.

In trying to learn the Kindle, I accidentally downloaded Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

I had already loaded Sense and Sensibility for free, but accidentally purchased the 99 cent Dracula.

Determined to get my money’s worth, I started the book on the drive back from Thanksgiving at Grandpa’s, and I am loving it!

Can’t wait to get back in the car, as a passenger, for the five hour trip to bring son back to campus, so I can get back to it!

Same exact thing happened to me last year as I was trying to figure everything out on my new Kindle…
Except my goof was on a much more expensive item ($9.99 I think) for 'The Help".
Well, my mistake turned out fine as well since The Help is a great book that I thoroughly enjoyed.

There IS a button on the purchased screen on your Kindle that says “purchased in error?” which I guess lets you unpurchase an item. I only buy on my computer now since it is not so easy to browse categories on the Kindle itself I think.

Glad your ‘mistake’ turned out fine!

I have used the ‘purchased in error’ button on quite a few occasions. I have a bad habit of accidentally hitting the purchase button.

A cool thing about the Kindle is you can download the first few chapters of many books for free. When you get to the end, it will ask you if you want to purchase it. I do this all the time - I even do it for books I plan to read in the future, so that they are on my Kindle as a reminder that I want to read them. I save those samples in a ‘future reading’ folder I set up.

Well I was not able to get the $89 Kindle yesterday, so I’m back to getting one of the others for Christmas. Is it better to have the Kindle with 3G or will I be happy enough with the Wi-Fi Kindle? The following statement is what made me ask -

There are a couple of places I visit in the summer that do not have Wi-Fi, which is why I am leaning toward the 3G Kindle, but of course I can always download books before I go away.

I love the 3G and wouldn’t buy a Kindle without it but I like the ability to download a book any time, any place. If I have to wait until I’m in front of my computer, I’m likely to forget.

I also subscribe to several publications (The New York Times, The New Yorker, the Atlantic) and they are downloaded automatically to my Kindle via 3G. The only thing negative about the 3G network is you will burn through the battery pretty quick if you leave it on all the time. I turn it on and off as needed.

Thanks MomLive. I hadn’t thought about newspaper or magazine subscriptions. I think I’ll ask for the 3G.

I bought a refurbished Kindle 2 with 3G yesterday for $119 for my S. Although I would have prefered to have bought him a new Kindle 3 with 3G (well actually would have much preferred to have snagged the $89 deal), I wasn’t going to spend the $189 for it. The 3G is important to me because of the same reasons others have stated, being able to download pretty much anywhere.

I just looked and I don’t see Amazon offering refurbished Kindle 2’s now.

i was also poised to hit “add to cart” and wasn’t successful :(…I am thinking that people with special computer programs (like ticket brokers) are the ones that snagged them. they will no doubt be on e-bay any day now…

Thanks, MomLive, for the tip about the samples.

I am so lame with learning all the features of my Kindle that I’ve had for a year now.
Kind of embarassing to admit…
That is so cool that it prompts you at the end of the sample to buy if you want.
If you say yes, does the book continue from where you are? or does it send you back to the beginning? As you can tell I haven’t even mastered bookmarks except the automatic one that marks the last page read.

I HAVE used the horribly slow browser to check my hotmail when I’m reading at the town pool in the summer…but it is SLOW. One of the improvements on the Kindle 3 I think.
Even though I don’t download often from my Kindle, I am happy I have it and probably wouldn’t go with saving the $50 for the wifi only. But that 's from someone whose Kindle cost $249 a year ago! And my DH thought that was a great deal as the price that just dropped from $299. What a difference a year makes.
But I am certain that I have extracted way more fun out of my Kindle than what it cost.

I think I said I wouldn’t ask any more Kindle questions, but I lied! My son wants a very minimal cover, so we think a silicone cover like on his cell phone would be the best. There are a few cheap brands on ebay and Amazon; the problem with those is sometimes they stretch out so you end up later buying a better one. My son likes to be cheap and would go with the generic ones, while I would prefer one from a reputable company. We have fond Boxwave and Marware both offer a silicone cover and we both like the Boxwave Atctic Frost cover.

Does anyone have a silicone cover on their Kindle 2 or 3 that could offer their opinion? As my son will we taking this to the gym daily and does not carry a gym bag, I think he needs something on the Kindle to protect it from a fall. When he left the house this morning, in one hand he had his wallet, ipod, Kindle, towel and keys. To me that stack is an accident waiting to happen!

@musismom - I go on the Amazon website and look over the top selling ebook lists (paid & free) every now and again. It’s easier for me to navigate from the computer when I am browsing as I have NO tolerance for slow browsing! I started with Kindle for the iphone so it was also much easier to view.
