You Know You’re Getting Old When…

Driving past campus on my way home from church, noticed a beautiful & thin coed in running shorts and cropped top. All my thoughts were on her flip flop shoes and all I could think was “You’ll regret those choices some day, but maybe enjoy for now.”

Somehow our 50th college reunion was a milestone that was astonishing, but I didn’t feel OLD. However, now my baby brother is thinking of going to his 50th high school reunion, … we are getting OLD (mostly him though!)

Yeah, for some reason it’s harder for me when my “little sister” hits milestone birthdays than when I do!

During my recent trip to Seoul, South Korea, I was riding in a crowded subway train when a 40ish woman gave up her seat for me. I vehemently declined.

Read this yesterday:

You know you’re getting old when your second wife addresses your first wife as Ma’am.

Seeing your “old” friends at your 50th HS reunion. Very fun time, but hard to believe HS was so long ago.

I’m in an area somewhat impacted by Hurricane Helene. Lots of stores only taking cash because internet down (I guess that’s the reason). Grocery store cashier said “cash only” and I pulled out my bills and said “I have cash, because I’m old!” I don’t think my young adult children ever carry cash.

I always HAVE a little cash but I rarely use it. My H on the other hand uses cash more than card. He is older than me.

I have gotten and keep a stash of $20 bills in our home after we had an extended power outage and determined it was very handy so we could leave our cash and exit the restaurant. For now, we use some it if gradually as needed (especially at places with a surcharge for using credit cards).

When we run low, I go and get more at the bank to have on hand, just in case.

Previously I’d write a check for cash every month to give H and me some cash for our wallet every month—between $100 or $150 apiece. Now with our stash of $20s, don’t have to go to the bank except to get money in other currency when going out of the country, quarters, when our $20 stash is running low or if we have checks too large to deposit by phone.

I had a “wow” moment this weekend that made me feel my age. SIL is in Europe visiting his best friend who he hasn’t seen since D/SIL’s wedding in 2016. D didn’t want to be stuck at home all weekend with 2 littles (4 & 13 months), so we drove 3 hours to visit my favorite aunt & cousins for dinner and then have brunch on Sunday with a dear friend who lives in same city now as aunt.
Anyway, we are packing up our Residence Inn suite Sunday morning and D is trying to break down travel crib that S & DIL had me bring back for D in March. D & SIL used it on their vacation in July, but SIL had done the setup & breakdown. D is having no luck and next thing I know she is calling SIL in Portugal for instructions. He walked her through it and FaceTimed with kids. My mind was blown that when I was her age such a thing would have never been possible. It made me realize how I take technology for granted now without realizing how much it has changed our world.

That’s the truth! I remember communicating with my BF in the '80s by writing letters on that lightweight blue paper when she was in Europe. When I wrote her about some bad news, she sent me a telegram.

These days, I can use WhatsApp and communicate instantly with my son in Poland. We have frequent video calls, too. All for free! I’m really thankful for technology.

I was in Germany visiting a friend for a month in 1982. My boyfriend (now H) sent me many letters on those lightweight blue foldovers while I was away! Sweet memory. The letters are still here somewhere.

Speaking of phone bills, we had $400/mo phone bills (in early '80s $$) during our LDR days. Always called after 11 pm and on the weekends to get nighttime rates. So glad for technology these days – we get realtime updates from S2, which in a war zone is both comforting and terrifying.

Yes, same here. When my son was in Beirut, he would occasionally say, “We can hear bombs going off, but don’t worry, they’re not too close.” Ack. Now I’m REALLY glad he’s out of Lebanon, although he still has friends there.

I’m also relieved he is out of Lebanon. Glad that worked out.

Once again the grocery store “elevator music” had me feeling old today as I walked through the frozen foods section listening to Live’s “Lightening Crashes.” :joy:
