Your Good Buy Of The Day (Part 1)

Stopped at the Verizon kiosk in Costco to see what my options were on replacing my old not-a-smart phone. I ended up with a 16gb iPhone 6, paid the sales tax only on the phone, bought covers for screen and back, net cost to me after the $200 rebate is -$100. I still don’t quite understand it but it was partly we had enough data on our Edge “arrangement” (it’s not a “plan” so not sure how to refer to it). Rebate form says this deal runs until 6/30.

left-we just upgraded our phones with that same program. They don’t call them plans I think because you’r “paying as you go” rather than a monthly “plan”, which really just means you end up paying about the same as when you have a “plan” which everyone is dropping as it’s the norm in almost all other countries to just pay monthly without the 2-year contract. In any case, H and I got new, fabulous Galaxy 6’s and D has her iphone 6 and we’re all very happy with them. We also only paid the sales tax, but we got covers from Amazon for MUCH less than in the store. D’s cover was only $4, including shipping.

The way the Edge program works is that you pay for the phone in 24 monthly payments that are separately itemized on your bill, rather than have the cost of the phone built into your plan.

It “coincidentallly” works out to be almost exactly the same as a regular plan… huh.

The real win for Edge is if you keep your device for more than 2 years, your price goes way down because you are no longer paying for a device.

For those of you with this Edge plan…how much do you pay per phone for mostly usage? As in, not the 1/24th of the cost of the phone, but the monthly charge, if you will? Do you still pay a combined data charge for all members on the plan?

I am curious how the costs compare to say a Verizon family plan? We pay $40/month for each smart phone, $10/iPad, and $20/non-smart phone. There is then an additional charge for the family data plan, but the data charge is independent of the # of devices.

As long as you get at least a 6Gb/month shared data plan, smart phones are $15/month, and tablets are $10. Non-smart phones are $20/month.

So if you are paying $25/month for the device (e.g. a Galaxy S6), plus $15/month for the phone, that’s the same $40/month that a regular plan costs. If you get a cheaper smart phone it’s less (Droid MAXX is $17/month for example), an iPhone 6 is a little more ($27 or $31/month).

We have a 16Gb/month (grandfathered) shared data plan that costs $100/month, and could drop to 10Gb/month for $80 if we wanted. We have 4 phones and a tablet. I can’t see going below 6Gb/month with so many devices, so we will never go above the $15/month per line charge.

The nice thing with Edge is that if you acquire a device on your own then you only pay $15/month. You can pick up used Galaxy S5’s for $150 or so.

Thank you @notrichenough

Hubby is a Galaxy guy. He just got the S6 at Costco. With that, he will get a $55 Costco Cash Card and another $15.00 Costco Cash Card. Rebate. He also received a Car charger and windscreen holder. Thanks for sharing.

Attention, Fresh Produce fans, RueLaLa has a boutique today with prices 50-70% off retail.

I’m not sure it’s a good buy or not but I’ve just ordered my outdoor furniture 60% off from Potterybarn. I’ve been waiting for months, but the slip cushion was in green and not red because red color was out. I will buy some red cushions for contrast later. I used the HawainAirlines credit card and after this purchase I should be able to get half a ticket off for Xmas and a free ticket for next year. I love multiple discount opportunities.

Went to the Vera Bradley outlet today. Entire store was 50 % off plus an extra 20% off. There was a section where everything was 70% plus 20% off. Lets just say I did a good amount of Christmas shopping. I’m feeling guilty that I spent a lot of money but I’m trying to tell myself I saved a lot of money.

I’ve been lamenting the fact that I never bought any flowers in May - it’s rained here practically every day for weeks until this week- so I stopped in at Menards yesterday and plants that are normally $5 were 50 cents. My pots are overflowing and I will still gets months of enjoyment out of my July flowers.

Did a pilgrimage to Freeport, Maine (home of LLBean, and tons of other outlets) today with DD and DW.

DD scored the best deal, picking up two pairs of jeans, a top, and a jacket for $20 at PacSun - $5 per item!

My best deals were a couple of shirts from the Gap for <$5 each (around 90% off), and a nice pair of Patagonia technical hiking pants for 60% off. I love Patagonia’s stuff, really good quality, but even at 60% off it is pricey.

Yankee Candle was doing a 3 large candles for $36 sale (they are normally $28 each) and she went a little nuts.

We never buy anything at LLBean, though. Their stuff is nice but ridiculously expensive.

wow–H and I went to the July 4th sale at Orchards (like HomeDept). I have not gone in for years as my first time there I thought the sales were idiot. But the weekend sale was too big. We ended up saving $247 on two items and the sales folks were super. So They not only saved us $ but we will shop there again.
We bought a free standing tool storage unit with $80 off and then a garden storage shed for $100 off and they still honored the 20% off on top of that for a total of $167 off.

They are opening a Sprouts near my house! Yay!

@jym626 We are getting a Wegman’s across the street. Can’t wait till it opens. Won’t need to drive to the market. Just a two minute walk next to a bank. All new construction because we live just off the main road where they built a new metro stop. We don’t have Sprouts in our area.

Sprouts had become S1 & FDIL’s favorite supermarket in CA. We don’t have them in the Northeast.

We don’t have Wegman’s here but I’ve heard great things about it!

We really like our Sprouts here. They have good deals every week.

We love Sprouts!
