On my new quest to only buy what I’d normally buy, at the same price or lower, but through places that give AmTrak Guest Reward Points from shopping on a link from their on-line mall, I have discovered that Home Depot has some decent prices on cleaning supplies.
Home Depot and Walmart both give 2 points for every dollar spent so I’ve been comparing between the two of them: Spray Away Glass Cleaner is only $1.97 for the 19 oz. can at Home Depot but at Walmart.com it’s $2.38 a can. Arm&Hammer Baking Soda FRIDGE-n -FREEZER - 14oz is $1.48 at Walmart but only $1.00 at Home Depot. Walmart had Clorox Disinfecting Cleaning Wipes Value Pack at $6.48 but at Home Depot it was only $5.48
Tide pods were the same price at both stores (who even knew Home Depot sells laundry detergent)!
@88jm19 - thaf fan was the first purchase we got for our MB in our “new” house. Same issue - southwest facing MB with very high ceiling. It seriously rocks. I can sleep with the fan on. It is an awesome buy, even at that steep price.
@88jm19 and @BunsenBurner - if you happen to have a newer generation nest thermostat, MUCH cheaper than that fan is the $39 nest temperature sensor, that will adjust the temp in the room you put the sensor in https://nest.com/thermostats/nest-temperature-sensor/overview/. it lets you adjust the temperature in that particular room at whatever time(s) of day you choose. Great deal! DS#1 has one in the nursery and another in the guest room (which gets cold). When we visited, we were comfortable, and so was the baby.
Jym - no AC, so there is no to thermostat. Trust me, adding AC is much more expensive than that fan. Not worth it for a couple of weeks a year when AC would be nice to have.
Of course we do. The fan only comes on when the boiler is on, which happens when the temps drop below threshold. We don’t want the boiler on when it is 80 degrees outside. it is an older home, so the furnace is not wired for a whole house fan as the house is already sufficiently leaky.
When the boiler croaks, we will see. For now, I am really enjoying the tech Mr. Dyson created.
DS doesn’t have AC in his house. Just heat. I assume the fan might come on without the heat, but that’s just a guess. I assume theirs is electric. With his system, he is able to control the temperature in the different rooms. Its pretty nifty.
@jym626 Thanks for the suggestion. We have a Nest, but I’m not sure the room sensor would be useful in our case.
Our house is older and the difference in temperature between my family room and our bedroom is pretty noticeable in the late afternoon on hot, sunny days. Right now if I force the a/c to a lower temperature to cool the bedroom by bedtime, it makes the rest of the house too cold…not to mention it takes a long time to reach the desired temperature in our bedroom.
The Dyson fan allows us to be comfortable with a higher Nest setting, preventing the dreaded too cold feeling on the first floor. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, thanks again. If the current arrangement doesn’t work long term, I’ll try the sensors.
My understanding (which is admittedly limited) is that the sensor is like having a remote thermostat in that room, and it can be programmed so it responds to one sensor at one time, and another sensor at another (or however you program it). Maybe you can call customer service and ask how they work. The link https://nest.com/thermostats/nest-temperature-sensor/overview/ says (scroll down) you can tell the system which sensor to prioritize when. Their downstairs gets pretty cold (I usually need an extra blanket) and when we were last there the system worked well and we were quite comfortable. I am sure they would not do this at the expense of the baby’ comfort. Surely they didn’t let the baby room get too warm.
We have a big stand up fan in our bedroom in front of the elliptical. Does the Dyson make noise? This one does, and it drives me buggy.
Temperature control by room with an HVAC system is only as good as the ductwork/zones in the house. A lot of homes will have limitations regardless of the thermostat used.
Any one thermostat can control up to 6 nest temperature sensors. You can see the temperature of each room from your phone, and you can decide where in each room to best locate the sensor to measure the temperature. One room too hot? adjust from your phone app. Another gets too cold? Adjust from your phone app. It’s a whole lot more efficient than a thermostat sitting in a hallway that is responding to the temp in the hallway rather specifically to the temp in any one room. It’s like having multiple thermostats that allow you to specifically adjust the temp in any one room. If a room gets direct sun in the afternoon and it’s your office, set a sensor in that room to the temp you want that room to be for your maximum comfort for the time length you desire. If it makes another room a few degrees cooler, well if you have adjustable vents I suppose you could fiddle with those, or if you see another room that someone is in is getting too cool, then tweak the temp in the sensor in the hot room a degree or so.
@jym626 The Dyson is relatively quiet compared to other fans. I agree with BunsenBurner and suggest you purchase one, where you can return it if you don’t like it. As I said before, we bought the tower fan on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond. It was ‘only’ $50 more than the smaller desktop model. A nice feature is the remote control.
We have 2 A/C units in the house, and the lower level one is on a baffle system so alternately handles the terrace and main floor. The second one handles the upstairs. So effectively they act like 3 units, one for each floor. We have 3 thermostats in the house, to separately control each floor, all controlled from the phone app. I don’t have any of the nest temperature sensors yet , but the 3 pack is on sale for $99. Might think about buying them, though right now I really probably only need one ($39) for the bedroom. I woke up at 4 am today due to the storms and was a little warm. I usually like it warm when I go to sleep (I get cold easily) but was a bit too warm, and we hadn’t pre-programmed the thermostat to cool the room before we awakened. If I had that temperature sensor gizmo, the room would be at whatever temp we set it. Instead I just grabbed my phone and turned down the temp a degree so the A/C kicked on. No need to get up.
Didn’t mean to hijack the thread, but to me, a $39 room temperature sensor (or even the $99 3-pack) is a better deal, which is the topic of the thread.
“instead I just grabbed my phone and turned down the temp a degree so the A/C kicked on.”
Anything that requires exposure to blue screen light like that in the middle of the night is a big negative for sleep quality. I keep my phone outside of reach.
Can’t see the remote or the buttons in the dark since they aren’t backlit. Bugs the daylights out of me when I have the tv on at night.
This morning, I was already up- from the storm and had to use the restroom. I have the phone screen set to nighttime and the brightness very low. IMO using it to light my path to the little girls room and additionally adjust the temp a degree on the app was killing 2 birds with one stone. Having to walk down the hall to adjust a thermostat or mess with a fan would have also affected my sleep quality. I did just find the remote to the tall fan, but as I said, I don’t like fans and I probably wouldn’t be able to find that little thing in the dark if I wanted to
There are apps for changing the color mode of your cell phone at night. Dunno if that solves the problem. We have an old-fashioned system and I have to get out of bed and physically adjust the thermostat if that is needed. Otherwise the only time I look at my phone is to change my alarm settings if I get up in the middle of the night and take my meds (eliminating the alarm to take them an hour before my regular wake-up time – I have meds that can’t be taken together, and must all be taken on an empty stomach a certain amount of time before breakfast, so I set a tentative alarm an hour before wake-up time to take them if I haven’t gotten up randomly before then.)
Just wanted to say thanks to the person who mentioned the Nest sensor. We just had a Nest thermostat installed last week and, so far, it’s working really well but our house doesn’t heat/AC evenly and I’m really happy to know about the sensor.
