Your progress:

Another one of my pet peeves is the use of the word “over” instead of “more than.” In other words, I often see sentences such as “Over 2,000 students applied to University of Michigan’s musical theater program.” “Over” is a place in physical space, as in “He held the umbrella over their heads to keep them dry and warm in the wet weather.” “More than” refers to numbers, as in “More than 2,000 hopefuls auditioned for the musical theatre program at CCM.”

I feel the same way about the use of the word “alright,” though apparently it is an accepted use now. When I was in school, we had to write “all right.” Two words.

Can you tell I was a newspaper reporter for many years and am still married to a copy editor?  :)

In any case, I actually have been very impressed by how well most of the students on this board express themselves in writing. It gives me hope. Keep up the good work, guys. I know I am not the only parent here who is rooting for all of you. It’s lovely to hear about all the acceptances rolling in.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwaanza and a Happy New Year,

Lisa

Oh Notmamarose, we are both patrons of the AP style book from our newspaper careers.

My D has not started her auditions. She has completed apps at all her schools except two, which hopefully will be finished this weekend. She has three academic acceptances under her belt, which is a nice boost of confidence. She has two shows back to back in the middle of January, so we are just keeping our fingers crossed about her health; mental and physical, as she manages somehow to keep her school teachers happy while learning lines, wrapping holiday presents, caroling with her school madrigal’s group and occasionally sleeping.
Next week she is going to buckle down and start working hard on audition material, finish learning her lines and get some well earned rest.
She starts her auditions at the February Unified Auditions in Los Angeles.
I would like to add to all the holiday greetings that have been expressed here, and to say Happy Festivus to All!

Grammar police: Pick it apart. Enjoy.

This needs to be a grammar thread! Okay, all of you newspaper people and English career people are my friends, and now I’m paranoid about what I post! There is no spell check on these postings, and I’m too lazy to write in Word, spell check, and then copy.

I just posted something on WMU that I know is wrong but I don’t know the correct way to write it. I told the person to “find a safety to apply to”, knowing that one should never end a sentence with “to”. What is correct - is it “find a safety to which to apply”? Also, I have no idea if I just did those quotation marks right or wrong!

Thank ya’ll for putting up with me anyway, as I’m an accountant! (now - don’t you love our southern “ya’ll” that is also not a correct word?)

Hahaha, it’s actually y’all - short for you all.

But seriously, the grammar discussion needs its own thread, because it’s trampling all over what was a really good idea in the beginning. This thread was supposed to be for us to post how things are going with our applications and acceptance decisions.

Let’s take the grammar discussion elsewhere, eh?

A quick story about the y’all…when I moved to NC from NJ, I was volunteering in my son’s classroom and helping the teacher grade papers (I am a teacher as well…just not a working one) anyway… I had marked a 3rd grader’s paper wrong for the use of y’all, and the teacher told me to leave it! She uses it all the time and never marks it wrong! AHHHH…all I could think is what on earth am I getting my kids into! She has seemed to be the exception. Most of our other teachers definitely have the grammar thing under control!

Here’s my list
University of Cincinnati- CCM (applied, audition scheduled)

New York University (applied, audition scheduled)

Emerson College (turning in my app tomorrow)

Ithaca College (applied, audition scheduled)

Boston Conservatory (applied, audition scheduled)

University of the Arts (applied, audition scheduled)

Otterbein College (academically accepted, invited to do scholarship comeptition, audition scheduled)

Cal State Fullerton (accepted for Fall 2006 Theater Major- you audition at end of sophomore year for until exclusive MT program)

Chapman University (applied, audition not scheduled)

Ericsmom,
You certainly can end a sentence with a preposition in casual writing. So saying “Find a safety to apply to” is perfectly acceptable for most ordinary purposes!
If you wanted to be more formal, you could say “Make sure to find a safety school to which to apply,” but it does sound stilted, doesn’t it?
I am sure I speak for the other grammar sticklers here when I say that we never intended this to become its own thread or to make people uncomfortable. The idea was just that we all should be aware of doing our best to spell correctly and to make our meaning clear, and that goes double for all of you smart students filling out college applications and writing essays.

Wow, tothestage, that’s amazing! My D is only applying to 7 schools and has 4 left to audition for, we figure if they aren’t interested in her for MT, she’s not interested in them! (Course it helps that she has a wonderful dance with mt minor for backup, and two awesome academic acceptances. She has definite opinions about the kind of schools she’s interested in so that narrowed her list considerably.

Melsmom

Just curious - what school had dance as a major with an mt minor? My D has already made her choice, but I’m curious :)

Point Park and Marymount Manhattan do.

tried to get this edit in but computer kicked me offline

Illinisue~
Point Park and Marymount Manhattan both allow you to minor in MT. They both are in cities with tons of opportunities for MT, even if you aren’t majoring in it, while performing frequently with dance. The stage is the stage, and performing is performing…Plus while minoring in MT you are still taking voice and acting class, and have the opportunity to audition for the theater productions with the school, and in the summer, time permitting of course! What decision has your D made?

i’m just keeping my options (within MT) open because it’s so competative

I wholeheartedly agree, it is competitive- but nothing compared to the real world of auditioning after you graduate! (My D did the whole NYC audition circuit as a child, so I know a little about it.) We are probably being a little too laid back about the whole process, but I think it keeps the stress level down a bit! Also auditioning always seemed to work out better for my D when she was cool about it-resulting in jobs, as opposed to when she got all worked up and really attached to a part/show (and now school?) that she wanted-resulting in heartache. I always tell her that it will all work out fine in the end
There are many options for working in MT with various backgrounds, too, and getting in one school over another won’t necessarily guarantee success, but having MANY options, like you will ToTheStage, will hopefully guarantee a great college experience with lots performance time (which I think is the one thing our kids live for!)

New Progress Report!!!

I have withdrawn my applications from 5 of the 10 schools I originally applied to, after receiving my acceptance to Point Park. I decided that since I do like Point Park, I might as well only audition at the 4 other schools I REALLY REALLY want to go to, instead of stressing myself out with 9 more auditions.

So now I’m only auditioning at NYU, BoCo, UMich, and CCM.

Yay! Next month will be MUCH more relaxing now!

You go, girl! Sounds like a wise decision. Please do keep us posted on how things go, and congrats on the acceptance to PPU!
