So now that the “audition season” seems to be about halfway over, where is everyone in their mt process? Basically, what I mean is where have you applied, where are you going to apply, where have you/will you audition, where have you been accepted/rejected/wait-listed, etc? It’s nice to hear where everyone else is in the process.

I’m mailing in my University of Northern Colorado and Hartt applications, having already done the ones for the main school of each. I’m also mailing in my Ithaca app. Once I do that, the three auditions will also be scheduled for each. I’ve already been academically accepted to Colorado with a $5000/year scholarship. I’m doing the Hartt and Ithaca auditions at the LA Unifides on Feb 12, and I’m going to Colorado the following weekend on the 18th for my audition there.

I’ve been accepted academically to Emerson - my audition is at the San Francisco Unifides on Feb 11. I really really really hope I get in!

I auditioned/applied to OCU, and was accepted to theatre performance with $12K/year academic and theatre scholarships. I still have to find out about the January 13th scholarship acceptance date, but everyone is gone from OCU right now.

I’m also waiting to hear back from UC Irvine, which was my safety, but I don’t care about it now since I got into OCU.

So how far along is everyone else? I know some people have already made their final decisions - you all must feel really relieved!

I have completed one audition so far, at Point Park, and was accepted there, yay! I have applied to ten schools total, but have decided to withdraw my applications from several of them now that I’ve been accepted to Point Park. In February, I’ll audition at UMich, NYU, BoCo, and CCM.

That’s me for now!

Merry Christmas everyone!!

D is wait listed for Elon, still waiting to hear from OCU (I think the letter was lost in mail but now have to wait until holidays are over to call). She auditioned at Syracuse and will not hear for awhile, she has an audition at U of A in February and she is waiting to hear from Steinhardt. Good luck to everyone and may you have some relaxation during the holidays.

lexismom

Folks, it is spelled UNIFIEDS.

Here’s the reason to be a spelling grinch:
A spelling slip-up on your MT application (i.e. ‘Unifides’) or a mis-spelling of a school name will make admissions officers winch and could hurt your chances.

Happy Holidays!

I haven’t done any auditions but have been academically accepted to Florida State and Otterbein with a scholarship. I will audition for Florida State in January and will be doing Juilliard, Carnegie, Ithaca, Otterbein, Penn State, NCSA, Purchase and Hartt in February at the Chicago Unifieds. I have conflicting times for two of them that I am still trying to work out and may have to do them as unscheduled walk ins or TRY to work out a way to do them later on campus. This would mean I would need to bow out of my school’s spring shows or be double cast. If any of you ED kids still have auditions scheduled, some of us would muchly appreciate it if you would cancel them so that the times will come open. Here’s to good health! I hope I spelled evertang rite! I runned a spll chek! :p

Hey Freelance,

Welcome on board! My kids used to call my husband and I the “grammar Nazis” because of our insistence that they use good grammar and also use vocabulary correctly (i.e., actually understand the meaning of the words they use). And while I wouldn’t say that they have confessed to being GRATEFUL for our diligence, I do know that they are both wonderful writers and are more aware and appreciative of the impact of thoughtful language and speech as a result.

Sorry - don’t mean to hijack this thread, but did want to respond to Freelance and also can’t stop myself saying that you meant “wince” not “winch,” right!
I CAN"T HELP IT!!!

Theatermom is absolutely correct about the necessity of using proper grammar and spelling when communicating, especially when communicating with colleges and/or the people who have the ability to make decisions about your future. Poor grammar and/or spelling mistakes communicate a few messages about the writer, and none of them are messages you want associated with you! (The messages are, alternately, that you are ignorant or that you don’t care enough to do things properly. I think we would all agree that neither is a message we want to convey.)
Naturally, there will be times when typos happen. That’s to be expected. But theatermom’s advice to be vigilant about these matters is good advice, no matter if you are a prospective college student applying to a MT program or an actor who is out in the world trying to get work. It’s clear from your communication here that you all are very smart kids, and your communication style ought to match!
:)

Lisa, another stickler for grammar and spelling.

I know that about the last thing any high schooler wants to hear is that Mom is absolutely right about something, but let me tell you, guys, theaterMOM and notMAMArose are absolutely right about the importance of using correct grammar and spelling, even on the web. College representatives read what you write.

Moms, feel free to use this message in whatever manner you see fit, in support of good writing from your offspring.

Signed,

aka doctorjohn

P.S. Ok, beastar, I think we’re done editorializing on your thread. Back to progress reports!

freelance: “A spelling slip-up on your MT application (i.e. ‘Unifides’) or a mis-spelling of a school name will make admissions officers winch and could hurt your chances.”

Would that not be “wincE”?
Hehe
(Sorry, that just had to be done :o )

I actually didn’t realize that wasn’t the correct way to spell it, so thank you for your corrections. Luckily, I don’t believe I’ve written that on any apps. I would edit my post, but I can’t find the little edit button. Can you not edit a post when it is the first of a thread?

I certainly can’t see an edit button anywhere…strange

At least you know now though, so unless anyone copies your spelling you should be alright :D

Yes, yes, I certainly meant, “WINCE”. I’m wincing at my mistake.

But…
WINCH–also means to haul or hoist. In a weird way the sentence can work. The MT powers that be can ‘winch’ your app into the discard pile if there are too many spelling or grammatical errors.
Let this prove there’s no such thing as TOO MUCH proof reading.

Dramaprincess-- i believe that you can edit your post within a short time frame. There’s an ‘edit’ option on the bottom right that appears after you select submit. I should have used it today.

Thanks freelance (and this is partially an opportunity to check - strange version of vbulletin this! :D)
When it comes to applications, I’ve found you definitely cannot proof read it enough. I went through an incredible number of draft application forms last year, then had to go and ask for new versions of the official ones. Obviously for something as competitive as MT, you don’t want even the slightest black mark against your name

EDIT: Found the edit button! :D

Heya!

I’ve been Academiclly accepted to:
Indiana (Individualized MT Major)
SUNY New Paltz
SUNY Fredonia (OK To Audition)
SUNY Potsdam (Home of Crane)

All four are safteys, but accademic acceptances none the less.

I already auditioned at Ithaca and Syracuse. Left on the To Audition list are NYU, CCM, FSU, Fredonia, UM (Pending academic acceptance), Miami, University of the Arts, PSU

… which is why you should never say who you are on here! I have friends that read this group who won’t post because they are scared they will have something they say taken wrong and held against them at auditions. This is supposed to be a kids forum and some kids are too intimidated to post! Thiiiiink about it …

I already auditioned at SUNY Buffalo, PPU, Carnegie Mellon, UMich, Syracuse, and Ithaca(got them all done before possible bad driving weather!) and I’m auditioning at SUNY Geneseo in February. Didn’t get in to UM, got academic acceptance and presidential scholarship offer at PPU with a delayed admission decision, and I got into Fordham University Lincoln Center Campus for Communications and a minor in Drama(non-audition safety). It’s so nice to be done with all the ‘big school’ auditions, I guess you could say. It’s so weird that it’s basically all over though, except for the waiting. Good luck to everyone and happy holidays!:)

Tripletreat,

I think that quote referred to college representatives reading your APPLICATION not your posts here on CC. Yes it is true that we’ve had a few program faculty contribute here, e.g., Doctorjohn and Professor Himmelheber, but I don’t think you need to worry about participating in this forum as far as asking questions, looking for help or expressing your opinion about your direct experiences with any of the programs with which you have had contact. Not providing your full name or the kind of detail that would allow a stranger to identify or contact you off site without your permission is what the moderators wish to avoid. It is for everyone’s safety.

This is a site for kids AND adults, students and parents and many other folks with knowledge of these topics who have time and again generously offered wisdom and counsel to those who read and post here. Respectful posters have nothing to be concerned about. I hope you will continue to post and encourage other friends and students to do the same. Diversity of opinion and diversity of posters keep this site rich with information and creative ideas.

Whoops, another grammar point – and Theatermom, I just know you’ll take this in the spirit in which I’m sending it:

You said: “My kids used to call my husband and I the ‘grammar Nazis.’” You should have said: “My kids used to call my husband and me the ‘grammar Nazis.’”
If you were referring only to yourself, you’d say, “My kids used to call me the ‘grammar Nazi.’” Adding your husband to the sentence doesn’t change that!

Can you tell I spent way too many years as a copy editor???

Since people are putting in their grammar and spelling issues, here are two from me that I have seen violated regularly on this forum by parents and kids:

There is no such word as alot. It is supposed to be a lot.

American usage requires that periods and commas be inside the quote marks at ALL times, even when logic suggests otherwise. British usage makes more sense – the period goes in when it should go in, out when it should go out. But most of us are here in the US.

Too funny Artsymom!!! I could lie and say I did it on purpose to see if readers were paying attention but who would believe me?

Nothing a grammar Nazi appreciates more than ANOTHER grammar Nazi!! How else do we learn?

BTW, your correction is one my mother points out to my children AND to me with great regularity - my Achilles heel it would seem. Makes me think how much more pleasant dinners at our house would have been if only the penchant to appreciate good grammar was an inherited trait!

Which then reminds me of one of my favorite bumper stickers: “Insanity is hereditary. You get it from your kids.”

Happy holidays all!!
