YouTube TV, cutting the cord

That is a lot of responsibility and figuring out for you! :scream_cat:

Yes it is, and honestly , I’m a little annoyed. he’s been such a whiner about the cable costs for years and we wouldn’t even have had it if it weren’t for the damn sports. I don’t watch them. He’s the “tech” guy in our household. He’s not a jerk or anything although I’m making him seem like it. He’s tired after work and doesn’t want to think about it.

The TV arrived today. I signed up for YouTube and going to officially cut the cord to cable tomorrow. I told my staff about my saga. They said to me, “you still have cable? “ I felt old.

I know how you feel - when we told people we cut the cable - they all said oh we did that years ago!

My friend just moved her 90+ year old parents from the house they’d lived in for over 50 years to an assisted living place. She said the hardest thing was getting the land line (and number) moved. Her sister spent many hours on the phone with the provider. It still wasn’t resolved the last time I spoke to her, about 5 days after the move.

I think they want the landline so badly because the mother has some dementia and that’s the number and system she knows. There may also be some hearing issues where the accommodations work better on landlines.

I don’t think he’s a bad guy - you’re right, he just wants what he appreciates after a long day to not be difficult!

I think it’s a learning curve and I bet in a week you’ll be in a better place and in two weeks even better!

Maybe you and @conmama should exchange phone numbers! :tv:

I am a bit nerdy when it comes to technology. I get annoyed when they don’t work.

@conmama: Yes, I had to sign in with a code on all three TVs.

DH keeps switching one of our TVs back to cable to he can watch the shows he’s already recorded. We assume they will disappear when we stop cable.

I figured out (thanks to this thread) how to put my favorite channels in the “Live” tab, so when I click on that they are readily available. But we need to set up a separate thing for DH so he can do the same. (He has different favorites than I do, for the most part.)

One thing that concerns me is that you can’t just browse through the stations. We sometimes do that just to have a chuckle, like when we bump into a 1940 movie. Im not sure if or how we will do that with YTTV.

Again, DH is the impediment to our cutting cable tomorrow. He is very very very slow to adjust, and I need to give him explicit instructions for how this stuff works. Unfortunately I’m still learning it myself!

@conmama : We are in the exact same place!!

You can set up two profiles - one for each of you, with your own favorite channels and libraries.

You can see the channel list in the “Live” tab.

Yes we are! I could have written your most recent thread. We too enjoy the lineup of shows on regular cable. At least you’re ready to cut the cord tomorrow. We have a few weeks left I think.

@DadOfJerseyGirl : I added DH to my Google account this AM. But when I log on to YouTube TV on the television, it doesn’t show his name as an option. Nor does it show his name when I log on from my computer. We’re trying to get onto “his” subaccount so he can select his Live channels but we don’t seem to be able to get there from here.

And in regard to browsing, Yes, I know we can see the list of what’s on each channel, but I don’t know how to get there from wherever I am.

All in all, we’re really confused. (And some of us want to throw things, but that’s not me.)

Oh no no no – we are by no means ready to cut cable!! If it were just me, I’d do it, but DH will – ummmm – have a cow. This will take several weeks, believe me. I’m hopeful that we’ll be ready by April 1. And in the meantime, of course, we’ll pay for both.

You need to set up “family sharing” and send him an invite to join the family group. Follow the instructions here. Once your husband joins the group, you’ll be prompted to pick a profile every time you turn on YouTube TV (or can switch profiles if there’s a default selection).

There are three main sections in YouTube TV - home, library and live. You need to be in “live” to see the channels list. Is that where you are? Would you be able to share a screenshot?

Thanks for that link! I’m going to wait until next week when the free trial is over and we’re actually paying.

I thing I did that hopefully won’t mess me up is I signed up for this using my Comcast email account and not my google one. I never ever is that email and it gave me a choice, so I used my main email.

@DadOfJerseyGirl : I did set up family sharing. We used his computer. Then, when we go onto the TV, his name doesn’t show up. While on the TV, when I click on the “Add a Family Member” or whatever it says, it tells me to go online to the family sharing instructions. I thought that adding him to the family plan on the computer would get him added on the TV, but – apparently not.

In the meantime, I’m taking a break. Otherwise I’ll become as hot-headed as he is!

I understand about the “Live” thing. I forgot that if I scroll down, past the channels I moved to the top, that I can see them all, as well as what’s on. I’ve done it for my profile; the challenge now is figuring out how to do it for his profile.

@conmama : Same thing here. I never ever use my gmail email account.

Yes it should. That’s how our setup is.
Maybe you need to restart your TV/app. If still no luck you might want to contact customer service and have them fix it for you. How’s how to get help:

  1. Click Help in the navigation bar.
  2. Under “Need more help?”, click Contact us.
  3. Select Request a call.
