I loved the Yumbo when I was in college in the late 70s, and was excited to hear it was back, so I went to Burger King tonight (for the first time in 10-15 years) to get one. It is not the same as I remember it. The one I remember was on a round bun with only ham and melted cheese. This one was on a hoagie-shaped bun with lettuce and mayonnaise on it. I have always hated mayonnaise and would have remembered if the one from the 70’s had it on it. To top it off, I did a little research and the internet says the Yumbo was discontinued in 1974. I distinctly remember eating it in 1979. So, am I crazy? Does anyone else remember the Yumbo?

Could you describe the yumbo from the 70’s? I don’t remember it at all!

It was basically a hot ham and cheese sandwich with just ham and melted cheese on it. Here is a page with a picture of what I remember, and it mentions it being from the late 70s and early 80s. http://blogs.westword.com/cafesociety/2012/07/five_discontinued_fast_food_it.php

Here is a picture of the current one: <a href=“Burger King Revives The 'Yumbo' Breakfast Sandwich After 40 Long Years | HuffPost Life”>HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost;

Needless to say, I am disappointed. But at least I will not be tempted to stray from my diet that I am starting next week. LOL

I remember the Yumbo. Now Arbys has a ham and cheese sandwich on the junior menu that is just a round bun, ham, and cheese.

That doesn’t ring a bell…at all!

Saw the commercials, but have absolutely no recollection of it…till I saw this post, I thought they were making it up.

I have read a lot about it. However, this sandwich was well before my time. :)

My father’s company was a BK franchise and I don’t remember this sandwich at all. I even worked in one the summer after my freshman year of college ('75) for a few weeks ( It was horrible and I asked my parents if I could go back to school and take a course to get out if working there, which they agreed to.)

It’s possible the Yumbo was only offered regionally or was being test marketed (less likely if it was on the menu for several years.)

I remember the Yumbo, but certainly don’t remember mayo or lettuce. I missed it when it was gone but this newest version does not sound like something I want to try.

I remember the yumbo! But every time I mention it to somebody, nobody else seems to know what I am talking about!

I hate mayo so either there was no mayo on it or I ordered it without. It was definitely on a round bun wirh no lettuce or mayo!

Never heard of the Yumbo. Sounds like it would be a delicious elephant-meat sandwhich.

Never heard of it until the recent ads. Bought one last week out of curiosity. Gack!!! Never again.

To the OP…what region of the country had the original yumbo?

We had them in Florida. They were pretty good!

Yumbo…rhymes with Gumbo. I wonder if this was a southern BK special?

They were in NJ too!

They were in NYC as well. I ate them in high school mid to late 70s, in fact, there was a Burger King in Times Square that my friends and I used to frequent as it was right by the subway station we used to get home. Also remember eating them in Syracuse when I was in school there in the late 70s to early 80s.

I never liked BKs hamburgers or chicken so the yumbo was pretty much the only thing on their menu that I would eat. Haven’t thought of it in years, thanks for the memories!

I definitely remember the sandwich but for some reason, not the name. I used to get them all the time and there was no mayo or lettuce. This was in NJ.
