I wonder whether there’s any risk from Zika virus for a woman who’s as far along in pregnancy as the one in the story. Don’t congenital anomalies like microcephaly happen at earlier stages of pregnancy?
Marian–from what I’ve read they don’t know enough about Zika (except how horrible it is) to say it’s okay at ANY stage. Now they’ve figured it can be sexually transmitted so I guess pregnant women aren’t the only ones who’ll be covered up to avoid mosquitos–it’ll be men too. DEET is your friend. After all the dire warnings about DEET over the years the new advice is to slather it on.
Pizzagirl–I thought I had heard the term awhile back.
LKnomad–cupcakes? Really? Doesn’t the term “labor” mean anything anymore? I would hope nurses don’t pick and choose about taking care of people because someone made cupcakes for them.
Maine–I don’t care what pregnant women do if they feel able to do it. More power to 'em.
Sometimes I think the “super pregnant woman” message in the media gives the impression that EVERY pregnant woman should be able to remain at her normal non-pregnant health status. And it just isn’t true for most–weight gain, hormones play huge roles. And flying while pregnant is not always safe–it is dependent on how far along you are–everyone needs to decide for themselves.
Think my “babymoon” was spent trying to assemble the crib and sew a baby bumper and curtains!
S1 was born six weeks early. I’m still waiting (31 years later) for my babymoon!
Yes, there are some reports that ADULTS may have temporary neurological issues, including temporary hearing loss for up to 2 months after Zika virus, so prudent folks are being very cautious about ANY exposure to Zika. I really hope that the H does make sure to use a condom when he comes back for the next 6 months or whatever the recommendation is at that point when he has sex–who knows if it may be transmitted in breastmilk too?
Babymoon has been around for at least a few years, I see it pop up in conversations and in media quite a bit.
I’ve even seen a new hotel offer a babymoon discount.
And I agree that there’s nothing “nuts” with the idea of a quiet, sunny getaway for two before the intensity and sleep deprivation that comes in the wake of the baby’s birth. Had there been no Zika virus around, there’s also nothing “nuts” with doing said babymoon in Mexico.
I agree with @BunsenBurner that there was a whiff of misogyny in OP’s language… maybe tokophobia, too
I’ve read that they’re really not sure yet if zika is causing the microencephaly (rates reported in Brazil were way lower than what was probably true before this, and possibly over-reported now)–fingers crossed this turns out to be true!
Now I had to go look up “tokophobia”…well, guess it’s my new “word of the day”.
VeryHappy–Just go for “HAPPYMOON”–now you’re famous–you heard it here first!
Forget babies and all the rest. It’ll be the new word as of now for "vacation that didn’t happen when it should have but “Hey, I finally got around to it to celebrate that occasion that happened to pass me by because life was just HAPPENING! (much to my dismay!)”
@garland where did you hear that? I really hope that’s true, but I haven’t seen it hit my circles (yet).
It’s really important that people not make the Zika Virus out to be worse than it is. It produces pretty mild symptoms (for those who even show symptoms which is only about 20% of those exposed) though of course pregnant women need to be cautious (if it’s true that it causes fetal abnormalities).
LOL!!! I just looked tokophobia up too----and got an ad for cheap tickets to Cancun
! I guess someone thinks people with it won’t be avoiding Mexican vacations.
Romani–it was in a comment in the NYTimes. I don’t remember if it had links, but the Times articles themselves have mentioned that the tie isn’t at all certain. Maybe wishfull thinking, but I sure hope it turns out to be true.
Ah ok. I hope so, too.
For instance the 150 cases a year reported previously seems too low. the US has 1000s annually, but our populatiosn isn’t tens of times larger than Brazil. So that does i ndicate under-reporting in the past.
Here’s more about sexual transmission of Zika virus.
here is an alternative

When I saw “babymoon” I thought it was when a couple went on vacation to try and get pregnant…
LOL, zobroward… anything to hide those unsightly pregnant women! 8-| Don’t just encourage them to stay home… but put them in a tent while they’re there…
We took a vacation before our kid was born. We didn’t call it a babymoon – I think the only thing that might be “new” is the term, which might have been thought up by a marketer for a resort somewhere.
I have also seen that the link between Zika and microcephaly is not confirmed. There is a strong correlation, but not definitive proof. The virus up to now has been very rare. If they can prove the link, then I think this is scary.
Interesting theory…
“. I was also shocked to learn, from this coach’s Facebook page, that she was being told that she had to make cupcakes and goodie bags for the nurses! One friend to her she had to because bringing gifts for nurses is “a game changer”. Huh??? They even suggested popping over to the bakery while in labor.”
Yes, that’s just what most women want, a surfeit of cupcakes and sweets when they’re trying to watch their weight. @@. Like there aren’t enough donuts and junk at any hospital. Ever go to a WW meeting and hear nurses complain about all the sugary junk well-meaning patients bring in and how it sabotages their efforts to keep themselves healthy? But then go ahead and bring people well curated cupcakes, gah. Apparently there are pregnant mommies with not enough to fill their days if they need to curate Pinterest-worthy goodie bag.
Now there is a theory that anti-mosquito larvicide in the drinking water has caused the birth defects. The larvicide began being used in 2014.
One Brazilian state has suspended use of the larvicide:
