10 Songs that should be on every adult's iPod

I got $150 worth of iTunes gift cards for Christmas. I’ve gotten really bored with my current playlists, so I need some ideas.

What 10 songs should be on every adult’s iPod? And by adult, I mean mother of 2 college kids :)

They don’t have to be oldies, but I do love the old stuff. I love many genres except acid rock, grunge, and rap.

Help me out.

Something by Van Morrison. (Moondance, Crazy Love, Into the Mystic, or your choice.)

No Surrender - Bruce Springsteen

Beach Boys - God Only Knows

Something by Bonnie Raitt (Angel From Montgomery, for example, or I Can’t Make You Love Me)

Something by Joni Mitchell. Maybe Big Yellow Taxi, to keep it a little more upbeat.

Otis Redding - Try a Little Tenderness

Something by Crosby, Stills and Nash – Suite Judy Blue Eyes, perhaps.

Something by The Who from Who’s Next

Something by Linda Ronstadt

for starters. :)

‘Vincent’ (‘Starry, Starry Night’) by Don McLean.

You said “songs” so I assume that precludes classical music (or I would start with all six of the Brandenburg Concerti.

Songs off the top of my head:
California: Joni Mitchell
A Day in the Life: The Beatles
What’s Goin On: Marvin Gaye
Blue: Joni Mitchell
My Girl: The Temptations
Respect: Aretha Franklin
Crazy: Patsy Cline
Sing Sing Sing: Benny Goodman live at Carnegie Hall
Bohemian Rhapsody: Queen
Brass in Pocket: The Pretenders
And anything by Cole Porter

oh I could do this all day

oh yes…and the entire “Pet Sounds” album by the Beach Boys
(NOTHING better than Good Vibrations)

What’s Goin On: an excellent addition, although perhaps Let’s Get it On…oh heck, BOTH of them. :)

I, too, could do this all day.

Actually, no! In fact, my last downloads were:

Van Cliburn’s 1958 recording of The Rach 3 Piano Concerto
Switched on Bach
Works-Emerson, Lake, and Palmer
50 Ways to Leave Your Lover and American Tune by Paul Simon
Soundtrack to Vicky Christina Barcelona
Suite for Flute and Jazz Trio (Bolling and Rampal)
The Beat Goes On by Sonny and Cher
Brown Eyed Girl
Just Like a Woman
My Love is Your Love-Whitney Houston
Paper Bag-Fiona Apple
Harvest Moon-Neil Young

I love Classical, C & W, Jazz, Rock, etc.

Aretha Franklin: I say a little prayer
Dirty Dancing: I had the time of my life
Air Supply: Making love out of nothing at all
Cat Stevens: Morning has broken
Jackson Browne: The load out and Stay
Neal Diamond: Sweet Carloline
Lynyrd Skynyrd: Sweet Home Alabama
Alison Krauss: Down to the river to pray
Adele: Rolling in the Deep
Joan Jett: I love rock and roll music
And of course…Rain by Silvard (piano)

Entire ‘Born to Run’ album. It’s a classic.

Edited to add - sometimes iTunes charges less for entire album than each song separately.

I also love ABBA. Just fun music to play when you need something upbeat. We have the GOLD greatest hits album, as well as the soundtrack for Mamma Mia.

Other fun soundtracks: Wicked and Hairspray.

Rossini–Barbiere di Siviglia
Bizet— Carmen

Nice upbeat " intros" to opera, if you are so inclined.

oh yes and Frank Sinatra (the Columbia years with arrangements by Nelson Riddle) 1943-1952 (?/)

Louis Armstrong - What a Wonderful World
Anything by Three Dog Night
Take Five by Dave Bruebeck ( instrumental)
Fly Me to the Moon - Sinatra
Beyond the Sea - Bobby Darrin
Any thing by the Eagles

What a Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong
Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Carole King & James Taylor (Live)
Southern Cross, Crosby, Stills & Nash
Hallelujah, Rufus Wainwright
American Woman, Lenny Kravitz
Bach: Cello Suite Nos. 1, 5, & 6. Yo-Yo Ma
American Pie, Don McLean
Piano Man, Billy Joel
The Long and Winding Road, The Beatles
You Shook Me All Night Long, AC/DC

Ten is totally unfair, I could easily list 50 without taking a breath so I’m going to look at this list and hate it…(well not hate but think of what should be on here).

^^^Oh, go ahead and give me your 50! I’ve got $150 to spend!

Nahh, I’m enjoying hearing others picks. I’m sure my highlights will be mentioned.

Katy Perry–Roar
Lorde–Royals
Maroon 5–any, lots
Lynyrd Skynard–Sweet Home is great, but lots of others too
Jimmy Buffet–changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes plus a plethora of others
Bowling for Soup–Come Back to Texas
Adele–Rolling in the Deep (plus others)
James Taylor–Carolina (and lots more)

My suggestion? Let your KIDS spend a good portion of it for you! Let them do a
MOM LIST (playlist) for you. Make them pick out the music they think you would like with the caveat that NEW stuff that you HAVEN’T heard is very important. Stuff that THEY like that hopefully you will too! Let them introduce you to new music and totally new groups. They probably already have a lot already available.

Be open minded–it’s only a CD–but the surprises are totally worth it. The question becomes not what you think you like but what your kids think you may like.

In no particular order, and I assume you can identify the artists:

Stairway to Heaven
Bell-Bottom Blues
Tuesday Afternoon
Across the Universe
A Hazy Shade of Winter
Band on the Run
Take it Easy
The Puppy Song
Cathedral
Roadhouse Blues

Some great suggestions. I wouldn’t have thought of Adele or Katy Perry, though I have liked their songs as heard on the radio. Some great classics noted that I would not have thought of, either.

Somewhere over the Rainbow by Iz Kamakawiwo’ole
Unforgettable by Nat King Cole/Natalie Cole
Bohemian Rhapsody, Best Friend, Fat Bottom Girls by Queen
I don’t want to miss a thing by Aerosmith
Best of Times by Styxx
Don’t stop believing by Journey
Rocky Mtn High, calypso, Country Roads, by John Denver
Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet
You’ve got a friend by James Taylor

Check out accapella music–Celtic Women and Celtic Thunder are fabulous.
As are tons of other groups–you start skipping around the sites because it’s such ear candy. Sure you’ll bite!

Bridge Over Troubled Water – Simon and Garfunkel
God Only Knows – The Beach Boys
Let the River Run – Carly Simon
Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond
Strawberry Fields Forever – The Beatles
Wind Beneath My Wings – Bette Midler
Rock Around the Clock – Bill Haley and His Comets
Your Song – Elton John
I Feel the Earth Move – Carole King
Nights in White Satin – The Moody Blues

Handel Water Music

Parting Glass (Clancy Brothers)
Al Kol Eileh (Safam)
Anything by Simon and Garfunkel

Your favorite Beatles song
Something goofy that you sing along to but would never admit that you do
