I think “yield” is the percentage of ADMITTED students who actually ENROLL in a college .

It looks like colleges are doing a good job of estimating how many students to admit in order to reach their target yields - probably going after kids who they think will actually come (maybe through the “why this school” essays, number of visits, etc). If they estimate correctly, then the yield won’t change much regardless of how many applicants they have. Yield applies to those who were Admitted, not those who applied. It must be difficult with kids like my DD who were waitlisted at 6 schools. When accepting the waitlist at one Ivy, she was asked which other schools waitlisted her - not sure what she put since she decided not to stay on most of the WLs (hopefully she didn’t list them all). Then again, maybe WL kids don’t get counted in yield since they weren’t initially accepted - not sure.

Adding Bryn Mawr. I’m not sure how to update for closing lists - a few students claim to still be on lists sometimes (ie: Harvard, Northwestern), even though the majority are released. The ones no longer being considered received a letter, so they are not still watching for news, I think. We might not want to remove the schools from the list either, because it’s good to have a statistical count at the end of summer of how many schools went, who and when. I think we’d need something more like a table to fill in all the nuances, such as when schools went, when they closed, plus post number etc. Maybe a separate thread???

Yesterday (5/18/11) UVa released the waitlist for the School of Engineering (SEAS). No offers were made this year. A big thanks to Dean J for keeping everyone informed!

A handful were recently accepted and some students appear to have not yet heard either way. It’s quite possible that Brown is simply reducing the waitlist to a handful of top backups now, if the class overall is already fairly balanced. There’s still the possibility of a couple of defections to HYP and my son is looking into taking a possible gap year, which might yield one more opening for someone this year (at the expense of a slot from next year’s class).

This seems to be a strange new twist to wait lists at a lot of schools. Perhaps this is the reason for the extra large waitlists? Release one chunk early and publicly, but still keep a wait list of an undisclosed number?

If the schools have gotten so good at predicting their yield that so many of them are using their waitlists only for a few, or even none, I really hope that they will waitlist fewer students in years to come. I have heard the arguments about needing a large waitlist in order to “sculpt the class,” and so forth, but if you’re only accepting 10, I really doubt a waitlist of 2000 is necessary to finetune an already balanced class. Waitlists that are double an entering class are absurd, and what’s more, are unkind and unsettling to the students who remain on them. Maybe the adcoms consider it a kind of consolation prize to the rejected, but if you read the threads for the various waitlists, it’s more like a protracted tooth withdrawal. Pull it and be done.
