I’m just making this post for anyone who wants to discuss anything about the competition.

I’m submitting to the writing category, namely poetry, and I just realized that they are not accepting a one poem submission. This year, they changed the rule, so that now you must submit a poetry collection (2-5 poems, 30-200 total line limit), which sucks because it changes the outline for my portfolio pieces. UGGGHHHHHH!!!

Planning on submitting entries for journalism, personal essay, and persuasive writing. Not planning on winning anything though seeing I only have a few weeks left and I haven’t even begun yet.

^Sorry, I forgot the dates were only for Region-at-large. I guess there’s still time but not much. I live in Florida and apparently there isn’t a local Affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

^Wesley108, When I went to register online for the Writing Category I was told that my area did not have a local Affiliate so my only option was to apply for the Region-at-Large.

If I am eligible (I’m waiting to hear back…), I will be entering a few categories. I haven’t entered before and I’m not sure if I can mail entries to more than one category in one envelope or if the have to be sent separately?

^An awkward educational situation… I’m not sure if I fall into the specifications they listed. I’ve emailed though, so I should find out soon. :)

^On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d say a solid 8. This quote comes straight from the website.

"Across the country, more than 165,000 works will be reviewed by our panels of arts professionals. More than 50,000 students will earn Honorable Mention, Silver Keys and Gold Keys in regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2011. Works designated as Gold Keys will be forwarded for national-level review in February 2011.

^Well, if there are about 165,000 applicants and only 50,000 get awards that means roughly 30 percent of the applicants win awards. So if you are at least a proficient writer I’m sure you will be at least up for a silver key. I’m guessing that the gold keys are earned by at least the top 5 percent of the applicants, but that’s just my guess.
