2011 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

I’m just making this post for anyone who wants to discuss anything about the competition.

I’m submitting to the writing category, namely poetry, and I just realized that they are not accepting a one poem submission. This year, they changed the rule, so that now you must submit a poetry collection (2-5 poems, 30-200 total line limit), which sucks because it changes the outline for my portfolio pieces. UGGGHHHHHH!!!

Planning on submitting entries for journalism, personal essay, and persuasive writing. Not planning on winning anything though seeing I only have a few weeks left and I haven’t even begun yet.

Haha, I know. I’m thinking about just writing during my winter break. SOUNDS SUPER FUNNN!!! Well, a little.

I already submitted my submissions. I had about 7 entries total so it all went off in one big fat envelope. Let’s see how that turns out…

I am submitting for Humor and Journalism. P-shaw.

When are the submission deadlines? I may submit a work or two of mine.

Art deadline:
1/7/2011
Writing deadline:
1/7/2011
Video Game deadline:
1/28/2011
Novel deadline:
2/25/2011

^ Actually, AppleBeam, the dates vary on your region and state.

And that is totes not fair. The writing deadline for California is 12/17 :<

^Sorry, I forgot the dates were only for Region-at-large. I guess there’s still time but not much. I live in Florida and apparently there isn’t a local Affiliate of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

^If there is not regional then how do you submit your’s?

^Wesley108, When I went to register online for the Writing Category I was told that my area did not have a local Affiliate so my only option was to apply for the Region-at-Large.

I’ll be submitting a portfolio of 8 pieces, as well as 4-5 individual pieces. Hopefully something makes it into the show.

I am submitting lots of stuff for next year’s contest.

Hopefully short story, poems, journalism, fantasy, humor, etc. Not novel because I’m hoping to get an agent and such ^_^

If I am eligible (I’m waiting to hear back…), I will be entering a few categories. I haven’t entered before and I’m not sure if I can mail entries to more than one category in one envelope or if the have to be sent separately?

^What do you mean by “If I am eligible”, bluespiano?

^An awkward educational situation… I’m not sure if I fall into the specifications they listed. I’ve emailed though, so I should find out soon. :)

So just wondering how good does a gold key look on a college application?

^On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d say a solid 8. This quote comes straight from the website.

"Across the country, more than 165,000 works will be reviewed by our panels of arts professionals. More than 50,000 students will earn Honorable Mention, Silver Keys and Gold Keys in regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2011. Works designated as Gold Keys will be forwarded for national-level review in February 2011.

Is it easy to get an award? Any type?

^Well, if there are about 165,000 applicants and only 50,000 get awards that means roughly 30 percent of the applicants win awards. So if you are at least a proficient writer I’m sure you will be at least up for a silver key. I’m guessing that the gold keys are earned by at least the top 5 percent of the applicants, but that’s just my guess.
