I just combed through the anthology and a lot of stuff was really, really good–although a few things I thought sort of sucked. Or, at least, were mediocre.

harsh critique but I kind of agree
Did you read the Don’t poem
It was really vulgar but intense

For personal essay/memoir, should I make fake names for real people? I haven’t written anything offensive about them, but I know some of the people mentioned might be uncomfortable if it does get published.

^It says you should change their names and plus it doesn’t hurt to

Yes, I saw that too. I finally started uploading pieces online, so I didn’t see that before ><

Hey everyone! I’m so glad this thread was started (my parents are sick of hearing me rant on and on about this contest ;)). For people who are submitting to the novel contest (or know about it), are you worried about the 2 year contract where they have rights over your excerpted-novel for two years even if you don’t win? I think I might enter the novel contest, but I’m afraid that if I don’t win, Scholastic will have rights over my novel for 2 years and I’m planning to query out my novel in about half a year. Any opinions on what I should do? Thanks!

For all the other Californians out there, I emailed the California at UC Berkeley region asking when we would find out about awards and this is what they sent me:

"The deadline for submitting writing to the 2011 California Writing
Awards has passed. We have already begun organizing the writing for
judging. Once the four rounds of judging are concluded, Gold and
Silver Key winners will receive an invitation in their email inbox to
a celebratory ceremony scheduled for the late afternoon on February
10, 2011 in Sacramento.

The names of all the Gold Key, Silver Key, and Merit Award winners
should be posted on the California Writes website by the end of
February.

Please understand that given 1400+ students registered for the awards,
we cannot possibly send emails to verify receipt of submissions."

I’m getting so nervous! I heard they judge over Berkeley’s winter break and that’s why we had to get our submissions in by December 17. I hope this means that we’ll start hearing about our winners soon!

For those applying RAL:

Just making sure, our entries must be postmarked by January 7, not received by the 7th, right? And the address is in NYC, so since I live NJ, it shouldn’t take long to get there anyway?

Also, do we have to have our teacher registered as well? What do they have to do on the website so I can let mine know?

I think I’m freaking out as the deadline gets closer haha

^Yeah, entries should be postmarked January 7th. I believe all you have to do is enter your teachers name and email address in your personal information.

darkmagnolia: Thank you so much for the information. Do you perhaps know if all the Gold Key medalists are invited to Sacramento? Last year, my friend won a gold medal finalist but they never invited her to Sacramento. She went to a Southern California awards ceremony instead. Does you go to the award ceremony of your region?

^Well here is how it goes. If you win a gold key in your region you work gets forwarded to the national level. If you work wins there yeah they will probably invite you, but only if you win at nationals not regional

Woahgosh: If you mean just for regional awards, I would guess that you get invited to the celebration for your region only. The link I put below makes it sound like all gold & silver key and merit award winners are invited to these ceremonies. Then, all gold key winning works are forwarded to the national level like wesley108 said. Sacramento is a regional celebration though, not national. The national awards are presented at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Thanks, AppleBeam!

Hi! I have a submission forms questions:

I am in the Region-at-Large…I know they want TWO copies of each submission form, but is one fresh copy and a photocopy of that copy okay?

It’s already the beginning of January. I wouldn’t be surprised if at least a few Gold Key/Silver Key winners have been selected (at least in my state).

I kept holding off submitting my novel, because I was terrified that the second I sent it off, I would realize something else needed to be changed (which indeed did happen). Now that it’s finally in, though, I feel relieved. I don’t actually know why, it’s just sort of like “good thing that’s finally done with.” I don’t think I really stand a chance, because I’m only fourteen and in eighth grade. My novel isn’t deep or mystical–even though those are the sorts of books I like to read. It’s told by a rebellious teenager, so there even when the situations get really bad, the tone is very blase. I liked that style a lot when I first starting writing it, but now that I’m in eighth grade I’m wondering if that style isn’t the best. Still, I’ve had fun writing it, getting to know my characters, and following them on their adventure. I guess that’s all that counts in the end, right?

2 Questions:

A) I plan on submitting a novel through “Region-at-Large”. The due date for the novel section is 2-25-11. Does this date apply to the electronic submission, physical submission, both, or neither.

B) I have a teacher at my school who I signed as my designated teacher. But I don’t really have her as a “teacher” she just happens to be a family friend who works as an Environmental Science teacher at my school. Is it ok to sign her up as my teacher.

Could someone please respond to my question (above) :D

when’s the writing deadline?
