2012 Elks MVS Scholarship

They’ll be notifying winners in mid-April

MrFeynman: Same boat. My school adviser told me that they transferred my application to a different lodge (because I live in a different district that the school I attend). But, this was in December? I’ve heard nada, nothing, since then.

The deadline was December 1st or 2nd, it says on the application.

And to scorpions and MrFeynman, since you didn’t get an email saying you were a national winner, it’s safe to assume you didn’t move to the national level. I’d call the lodge where your application ended up going to.

Congratulations again to the 500 finalists! That’s a huge accomplishment to be (approx) 10 from your state! Best of luck in winning one of the big awards! I wonder if our original application is considered when they choose the big winners or if it’s just what we sent in online and our SAR report. I’m not worried, I’m sure the 18 big winners really deserve it and I’m just so thankful to have made it to the national level. The MVP scholarship has enabled me to attend college and I’m so thankful for that. Also, we write letters to the people who sponser us right? I remember reading that somewhere? Maybe?

Also, for everyone else in case this hasn’t been posted, here’s the link to the database of all past winners:
[Elks National Foundation :: Scholarship Winners](ScholarWeb: ScholarDatabase.cfm)

I emailed ENF about that, and they told me that national judges get our whole app along with the newly submitted SAR and essay.

nervousohio, I think you’re awesome! I love your attitude. Congrats for making it to nationals!

Thank you! I assume you did too? Congratulations!

And haha…that’ll be interesting…I look back on the essay I wrote for the December 2nd deadline on the original application…and well, let’s just say it was one of my first scholarship essays and it just makes me laugh looking back. It’s just not developed compared to what I’m writing now. Not that my writing now is anything spectacular, but I feel like through all these essays this year I’ve definitely grown as a writer.

To be completely honest, and maybe this sounds kind of bad, but I won’t be going to any fancy college next year because financially it’s just not possible to live away from home when I’m footing the entire bill. But even CC or commuting (I’ll likely be commuting next year to a local university because of the scholarship from the university and ENF!) still presented a challenge. I don’t know…I’m watching all my friends go onto great colleges and I’m just barely scraping by to go to CC or commuting to a local uni. This scholarship really gave me a sense of pride again. It’s hard to watch all my friends move away and whatnot because somehow I view that as sucess and that I did something wrong. But the reality is that I simply don’t have those same opportunities. The ENF scholarship gave me confidence that I did something right in high school. Ok, sorry I get so gushy…I can’t help it.

All national finalists receive at least $4000 right?

Karaokemachine

Yes, all national finalists receive at least $4000 ($1000 annually).

At the bottom of this page it explains a little more and shows the actual amounts:

[Elks National Foundation :: Most Valuable Student Competition](Most Valuable Student)

Wait, how many national finalists are there? Are there more than 500 or only 500 exactly??

There are exactly 500.

Essentially, everyone gets at least $1000 annually.

But what they’re doing now is ranking the 500, and the top 18 will get extra money.

nervousohio,

Thanks! Yeah, looking back, I can see how embarassing my writing is too. Let’s keep it mummm and hopefully they’ll compare us to other people’s hopeless writing. :)

Your original deadline was December 2nd?!! No fair!! :open_mouth: My lodge’s deadline was October 28th  But then, maybe that was a good thing, since back then I was in my work-a-holic mode, as my friends call it  If it was December 2nd for me, I probably wouldn’t have applied, and I would’ve totally missed out.

Don’t worry…it doesn’t sound bad at all. I completely empathize, in fact. My household’s annual income is $7200, so I know how it feels…the suffocating weight and pressure of college bills. But just think…after undergraduate, there’s still graduate, and I’m sure you’ll make it into a terrific university! After all, there’s a reason Elks chose you over the other ten thousands applicants.

As for me, this scholarship is making it possible for me to help my mom while I’m in college. Originally, I thought that it’d take away my work-study so I can be a lazy college student like no one’s seen, but then I’ve realized that I can now use any work money for my own to help my fam instead of feeding it all to that devouring maw of the horrific college financial aid office. ^_^

And–haha-if you’re gushy, then I’m doubly so, as you can see.

We should be hearing back any day now, right? I’m held in so much suspense! But wait, didn’t the last email ENF sent us say that we’ll hear back in late April? But the website says mid-April… ?_?

just wondering does anyone know when the ELKS will release the final?

Oh oh the website for viewing the winners this year doesn’t work!! That means notifications will come out tomorrow brcause they’re updating!!! (I know this from reading previous years’ threads.) At least, I think… :D

Wait, never mind. The website’s back up :/

My D who heard nothing throughout just received a local lodge scholarship for $2000 a year for 4 years. Maybe some others will still hear something.

im curious what ‘just’ means

you got it in the mail today? today’s sunday? saturday night? or maybe an email or a phone call?

sorry im being so anxious here.

quick question, what can the elks scholarship money be used for?

We had already given up on anything from the Elks. She spoke to the leader of the local lodge Saturday around 5:00 pm. We missed an earlier call and played telephone tag. When we heard the message to call back, we expected either a smaller one time amount or a sorry you didn’t win message. We never expected so much from a local lodge.

Just got a call! 7th place winner
In addition to this, I am also getting a state scholarship (from CA) worth $4200! Elks is incredible.

congrates! did you also receive the e-mail?

Not yet, but they told me that I would receive an email later today.
