2016 and beyond wedding moms and dads (Part 2)

Good luck finding a dress! I agonized over that too. I did finally find something online after ordering and sending back some dresses that just didn’t work when I tried them on. I wss the groom’s mother.

Goskid 2 is getting married June, 2026. Vividly remember the horrors of ordering and returning many while trying to find a dress for Goskid 1’s 2017 wedding. Can’t imagine this one will be any easier–body is even more out of shape…and I believe the dress code will be Wine Country formal??? wth is that??

California or Washington or Oregon wine country? Definitely not a ball gown. Not black tie. You will be fine!

I bought knee length and wanted it fancier than usual for me and tried for something a little different. Got several from Nordstrom’s Rack that I ordered online, tried on and finally found one I liked.

Good luck! Online gives more options on sizes and styles. There was very little selection locally but online was much easier to find things that were attractive. I was a MOG too.

For D, I drove her and me to a local designer and D was fitted with a perfect bustier and black palazzo pants. We also bought nice thin wraps to keep night breeze off from designer. D is a 00 and super tough to fit. We were very pleased.

I found much more online too. I went in person to Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Dillard’s . But ended up getting my Adrianna Papell tea lenghth dress online from Dillard’s.

I don’t think I have anything in town. A small Belks. That’s it.

This is what I was looking at along with a generic picture of me. I don’t do knee length. I will wear flats. I’m 5-10 and a klutz. I wore flats to my wedding and haven’t had a pair a heels probably since high school. I don’t do jewelry. Ears aren’t pierced. Don’t do rings or bracelets. I don’t even own any.

I don’t do ruffles or florals. Normally, I don’t wear sleeveless. However, at the dress shopping they were saying I would look in them. I do have defined arms for 52. But I have very super wide strong shoulders and a very strong back. I might be able to pull this off. I do like how the pictures of regular people in the reviews look good.

And note - I think these other fashions look great on other people. Just not me!)

Thank heavens the Lord and Taylor flagship in NYC was still open when I needed a MOB dress…and a good friend encouraged me to come to NYC to shop. Found the perfect dress, and had a terrific day as well.

We went to three very different weddings last year, and all were wonderful. First one was “garden dress”. Bride wanted folks in garden types of fabrics, and prints. No gowns. Second one was black tie and gave my DH a chance to wear his tux, and I got to wear the dress I wore to DDs wedding again…yay. Third was Semiformal dress. I had a great kerchief hem dress I wore to that one.

It was fun choosing three different types of dresses for these events.

We don’t have any weddings this year.

I think we are somewhat similarly built, except I’m 4 inches shorter. I wore a halter style dress as a MOB in 2022. You will look great in a halter style dress, like the one you posted!

With a halter dress, one can avoid the need to look for jewelry, but if you want to add sparkles, something like this might work:

We haven’t heard of any upcoming weddings but nephew was recently engaged and another nephew has dated about 8 years. We should be invited to both weddings when they occur.

Your body is going to be a knock out in any dress you like! The one you posted is very pretty!

I think the only good thing about shopping in person now is that they MIGHT have a dress you saw online and can see the fabric. They WON"T have it in your size but might have another dress by the same designer that you can try on and then you can order the dress you like the fabric in the size that MIGHT fit.

It all takes a lot of work!

I did get lucky at Dillard’s when I went to buy palazzo pants and found a pair in my size for $100. Then I was loitering as I couldn’t find the sales clerk (turns out she went to lunch) and I found another pair on the sale rack for $22. Score. Of course, I spent those savings on a new suitcase.

I love the AZAZIE dress!! My 3 kids got married over a 5 year period. I searched a lot and ended up getting one dress at Anthropologie, one was Ralph Lauren and the third was Halston.

Beautiful dress that will really complement your figure. I love it.

D’s bridesmaid dress was from Azazie. We were impressed with their prices, quality and customizing. They even gave a credit toward more alterations, which we used for hemming. We were very nervous giving D’s measurements as we had done this with a prior bridesmaid dress and it was dreadful and D has to buy two ill-fitting dresses for that debacle with a different company. The Azazie folks made the floor-length dress fit perfectly to measurements except for the hem (of course your experience may vary).

That dress you posted was lovely!

That is the one thing about fabric and also with sizing, and sometimes the cut of clothing. Sometimes you can tell enough from a photo/mail order with some of the better/formal dresses.

I like that Nordstrom now posts videos of stylists demonstrating clothing items. Definitely help with sizing and fabric feel!

The MOB was wearing a tunic with leggings. Since Covid, I’ve been wearing denim skirts and dresses. If I could do it again, I’d have short dress made. I don’t look good in midi or long dresses.
Still, I had a black tie affair the following week, so this worked

My D is getting married this summer, at the beginning of August!

But she is an older bride, lives in a different country (where the wedding will be), and is taking care of pretty much everything.

It will be a church wedding. H/her dad is clergy and he will participate in the service.

The reception will be at a favorite restaurant.

She is not having any attendants, but will include her closest friends in other ways. No dancing at the reception. There will be music but not loud so people can talk. She’ll have a bouquet but is not doing other flowers. She’s doing things her way, and prioritizing the things that are important to her.

I’m still working on finding shoes. Just returned 5 pairs yesterday; have 2 more on the way. I wear a wide width and would really like to not be uncomfortable. I have a back-up pair I got at Goodwill over a decade ago that I can wear if all else fails, but they’re a little beat up.

I also plan to get a hat, but we’re moving at the end of month so I will work on that after the move (one less thing to move/have damaged in a move).

Wedding is 91 days from today!

I have had good luck with these shoes – wide feet, bunions, can’t wear heels. Maybe they would work for you? I like them so much I have 5 pairs!
