2016 and beyond wedding moms and dads (Part 2)

Entirely possible yes. and also might just be they want to see them all themselves, first

We went to the wedding of one of the young female engineers I work with last Saturday evening. The event space was in a high rise and had views overlooking Petco Park, San Diego Bay and the Coronado Bridge. The biggest surprise was that the officiant was an Elvis impersonator. Evidently the groom wanted this and it turned out to be so fun! I love seeing couples have the wedding that they want.

My D22 just got engaged over the weekend, anticipating getting married next summer! Her fiance just started a PhD program at the university where D22 is still an undergrad (she is graduating next May), and they want to get married in that city and of course stay there while he finishes his program. Looking forward to chatting weddings in this thread!

I am so happy they got engaged before Thanksgiving…they will be at our house all week of Thanksgiving, so we have lots of time to talk wedding plans!

That will be a quick (but doable) turn around! Congrats and yes, please share details! :clinking_glasses:

It’s so funny because my husband and I were only engaged for about 3 months and planned a large wedding while we were in 2 different states for about half that time…. So something like 7-9 months seems like so much time to me…lol. I know what we did is very different from the norm though.

My friend organized her wedding very quickly - about 3 months -because of an upcoming corporate move. The priest was her relative, and he would only marry her if she swore that she wasn’t pregnant. 30 years later, my niece also planned a wedding in 3 months. My aunt called & asked me if my niece was pregnant (she was not). It’s not something that crosses my mind, but I guess weddings that aren’t planned for many months in the future signify pregnancy to some people!

I guess so! Short engagements were the norm in our church/friend group at the time (4 months was about average). We chose the exact timing we did for living situation and work schedules - we didn’t want to live together before marriage and had previous leases to consider, as well as trying to avoid a busy season for my job at the time.

My daughter was engaged and sort of planning to be married 10/3/25 (hadn’t done anything about it like look at venues). When another travel plan fell through, they decided to get married 3/10 instead. They decided this in Dec, so about 3 months. Lots of reasons, but no one thought they were pregnant (I WISH!)

One reason was that she decided she didn’t want a big wedding and just made decisions quickly. Some guests couldn’t come because they didn’t have enough time to request time off (2 friends are medical residents, groom’s brother is a fireman and his schedule is 6 months out).

My D became engaged 2 years ago yesterday. They thought a summer 2024 wedding would be nice, but found almost everything they liked was booked already. May have been still the impact of Covid with delayed celebrations. So they decided to concentrate on what they REALLY wanted, and when those venues/services were available, and ended up with a summer 2025 wedding instead.

I will have a future DIL by the end of the day!!! My youngest flew to California last night and was spending the night with my sons best friend. The surprise engagement will be in Carmel/Monterey sometime this afternoon. This romatic event is sooooo not what I thought my son was about - wasn’t sure he’d ever marry, just be happy as life partners. Not kidding, this kind of thrills me! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Maybe it’s time for a new version of this thread too, but any engagements/wedding decisions over the holidays?

Ooh, I can – kind of – chime in!! My son told us he is planning to propose later this year. Yippee!!! We adore his girlfriend of nine years.

Nine years! But we will take it! Up till now the subject of marriage was the third rail, absolutely verboten. So by this time next year I may have something to contribute to the thread!

My niece got engaged just before Christmas. She and BF live in DC and came to Colorado for Christmas and immediately headed to the mountains to snow board, and he asked her. We all assumed she must have known but in fact she did not and was surprised. My sister, however, did know a few days early as for a reason I don’t understand. BF had to send the ring to Denver and my sister had to sign for it.

But that’s all we know. No dates (not even a year), place, style of wedding, number of guests. I think it will be in Denver but you never know. She is the 4th of the 5 cousins in this group. My two and her brother (all 1996 babies) got married in the last year, and the final cousin, who has been dating his girlfriend the longest (6 years?) is the lone holdout.

DD 2 is engaged! Planning for a 2027 wedding has begun! This one will be local vs our other daughters which was in the grooms parents state. DH and I have saved to pay for the wedding and we aren’t expecting any contribution from the grooms family because they are not in a financial position to do much. They do want to meet with us to discuss “money”. Hopefully that won’t be too awkward.

We never met mom of the bride until the welcome reception shortly before the wedding. She was/is a wonderful and charming woman. We never had any discussions about money with anyone. Our gift (cash) to our S for their engagement was just that, a gift. Our wedding gift (cash) was also just that, a gift. Our S never sought nor invited any discussions about money, nor did DIL. It was fine. I just let them figure out what they wanted and how they wanted things. It worked. YMMV, of course.

I love when this happens. So many proposals these days are choreographed and planned to a T (hair, make-up nails done for pictures). No shade being thrown to those brides-to-be, but I just love an authentic, old school surprise proposal! Congrats to your niece!

Congrats! I hope you’ll share some details along the way.

Money is certainly one way to support the couple but encouragement and sharing of ideas and choices is another way. I hope the grooms family can express ways they would like to be involved.
