2016 and beyond wedding moms and dads (Part 2)

It’s almost prime wedding season. I always think about one of my mom’s favorite songs at this time of year, Apple Blossom Wedding. I’m looking forward to hearing reports on the happy events that will be taking place this spring. When I got married, I enjoyed it so much that I thought it would be cool to be a wedding planner someday. I no longer have that desire, but I want to live vicariously through descriptions of weddings!

The oldest daughter of our very good friends is getting married in August! We received a save the date card… means we are going! No idea what the venue etc. will be, so will have to wait to decide on our outfits for the event!

6 weeks and counting to wedding #1 and 14 months until wedding #2. I feel much better now that I have my dresses and shoes accounted for. Everything seems to be progressing as it should. Since the kids live in a small apartment, the gifts are being shipped to us. Older S’ bedroom is so full I don’t think FDIL1 could get in/out of bed lol. This is the fun part.

That happened here too…and almost 8 years later…we still have some of them. The ones least needed.

My brother’s wife’s cousin’s child is getting married in Provincetown in the summer. That’s all, no more will ever be said!

My sibling texted me this week to say their daughter’s bf has asked them if our family has any heirloom rings for the purpose of proposing sometime in 2026! (I have all the heirloom jewelry in a safe) This is the final unmarried cousin so very exciting! My niece has no idea, so another surprise to protect! She and I are quite close, so maybe I can be a flower girl!

Ok I edited my post above. I had a point but without offending anyone I’ll :zipper_mouth_face:.

Have at it.

We have 3 October weddings. 1st is at a lovely resort hotel within a mile of the house groom grew up in. Groom is my younger brother’s 3rd child (older 2 are also married, but youngest is single).

2nd wedding is daughter of a friend about 9 days later. We just got “save the date” and all we know is it will be in our state.

3rd wedding is my younger sister’s 2nd son (older son is talking about weddings with his longtime GF too). It’s near end of month and likely at a very nice country club on Oahu, but details TBA.

All three couples have been together about 5-8 years or so.

One of my nephews got married at the city hall last December. We were told there would a wedding reception this October. It’s March and we have not heard a peep from them. I am wondering if it’s going to happen.

My nephew and his fiancée (now wife) put down deposits for their wedding before covid. Then covid hit and banned large gatherings. They had to leave for residency in DC. They could NOT get refunds of their deposits or they may have just canceled. Their wedding was summer of 2022, when.covid restrictions had eased. It was exactly what the bride had wanted. My SisIL (youngest brother’s wife) couldn’t attend due to her having covid but my mom was able to attend and had a lovely time. My younger brother (father of groom) was slightly under the weather but he did well and I don’t believe he got anyone ill.

It was a lovely, very lavish affair, with many fine wines and fancy cocktails. There were fancy centerpieces flown in from Japan and several different food trucks for dessert. The venue was a grassy estate so they had to bring in chairs, tables, tent, dishes, utensils, food, everything

It was about an hour drive from our home so I rented a 2 bedroom condo and we had a nice staycation—H, me, D, S and his fiancée (who is now DIL) in connection with the event. My older sister stayed at the fancy 4 Seasons Hotel nearby.

We have two family members who had wedding ceremonies long before their wedding parties. One was an easy drive from here (three years after their ceremony). One was a destination wedding in Europe about 8 months after the ceremony. We went to the one that was a drive away. We declined the destination one…it was going to cost a small fortune for a short time.

But they did have their very nice and quite fancy wedding parties…eventually.

I’m going to 2 weddings this year and can’t wait! Going to someone else’s wedding while still planning my D’s is going to be so helpful, and paying attention to all the details will make it even more fun! Both weddings are second weddings for the couples. One had a small civil ceremony a year ago to get the immigration ball rolling and will now have a large religious ceremony. The other had a small religious ceremony a year ago because they are older and wanted to start having a family, and now they are going to have a fun ceremony and big party, and happily with baby in tow. I love how both couples have handled doing what they felt they needed to do, with what they wanted to do.

I believe the DEPOSIT that my nephew’s 2022 wedding put down was more than 2x the total cost of my son’s wedding. Both had the wedding desired by the couples involved and both couples are happily married. I was glad I didn’t have to help pay for my nephew’s wedding. It was very tastefully done and exactly what the bride wanted, but I have no idea how much the final cost of the wedding was, other than a LOT of $$$$.

I had my eyebrows done yesterday by a lovely young lady. She & her husband already had a courthouse wedding and are mulling over exactly what kind of additional celebration (if any) they want to have. She is fine not having anything additional, but her mother wants to have a traditional wedding & reception with another “saying of the vows”, I guess mainly because the courthouse ceremony was just the two of them and a witness. She is hoping to sidestep her mother’s wishes. Luckily her sister is getting married this year and is having all the bells & whistles for a wedding, and she thinks that will satisfy her mother’s need to see at least one of her daughters have a big production.

My older daughter had a big wedding (postponed by a year due to Covid). Five years later -while she loved her wedding, she does say that she wishes she had cut down the guest list and had something more intimate.

On another note - we have three weddings this year, 2 are local and one is in Carmel, CA which is on the other side of the country for us. I am looking forward to it!

I was happy at my huge wedding of 750 guests and S was happy with his wedding of 82 attendees (including the bridal couple & officiant). Small weddings are lovely but by necessity you are unable to include ALL the people whom you or others might want to have there. As long as bride and groom are happy and not deeply in debt for festivities, I think all options are fine.

Not everyone has a big family or friends network. 82 might be everyone they care to have there or invite!

My extended family is pretty large so 82 meant no children and hardly any of us parents could invite friends. It was fine-the couple was thrilled and that’s all we really cared about. Our uninvited friends and neighbors understood.

We let our kids make almost all of the decision making for their weddings. But not on size of the party. With my older daughter it was my son in laws parents who put the absolute kabosh on limiting parents friends from the start. That made it easy for me when my younger daughter got engaged. She assumed that we would be able to set our guest list amd that she woukd have no control over that issue.
