2016 and beyond wedding moms and dads (Part 2)

Recent wedding ended at 10. They didn’t have burgers but when we got on the bus back to hotel they did have Duck Donuts. I think they were available to everyone as they were leaving.

After son’s outdoor wedding and reception in big tent there, they had a nice after party at the hotel. That was nice because almost everybody was staying there or the hotel next door.

We went to several weddings at a venue near here. They actually provided doggie bags for guests…and they also have a chef carving prime rib leftovers for folks to take home.

We had some sort of sweet treat at those weddings, but the wedding cake was cut up and given to guests to take home.

Our Venetian table of desserts was set up in the room outside of the ballroom (where the appetizers were served before dinner). It was a long table with plentiful selections of dessert treats. I don’t recall the sizes, but guest could take as many as they wanted of each dessert. No take home boxes for that for all the guests!

We also had a coffee and tea for folks to get, but that was set up inside the ballroom.

At my nephews wedding, they had an ice cream bar instead of a cake (there was a small cake) and pizza. That was at about 9 pm. Problem was the dinner really didn’t end much before 8-8:30 so very few people ate it. We all had to ride buses from the venue back to a hotel and the first buses left at 10 and last at 11. It wasn’t far but it was at a private home with no parking so everyone needed to take a shuttle. We actually had an Uber pick us up at 9:30 because I was exhausted.

I don’t know what his sister will do this summer. She’s getting married at 5 pm and I think it ends at 10 so again I don’t think snacks will be needed. Another wedding I’m going to at the same venue in Oct starts at 1 pm on a Sunday and I think ends at 6. It’s a kosher wedding so I know there will be no cheeseburgers delivered as we leave.

Are we over feeding our guests??

D2 and her H flew down to Florida on Friday for a wedding. They are flying back now (Sunday) to go to another wedding today.
She said the Florida wedding was hot, humid, outdoor with no AC. It was a buffet, which D2 disliked, and didn’t have enough food. The bar lacked a lot of supplies and only had red wine, not white.
D2 said the bride worked at a big law and the groom in finance. Neither one is from Florida.
Today’s wedding is a black tie. She is hoping it will be a bit nicer. I told her at least it won’t be hot.

I live in Florida and I’ve been to many weddings here. Often the ceremony is outside, but the rest is indoors. I can’t imagine anyone planning to have the entire affair outside.

I’m sorry that your daughter did not have a good time down here. At some of the local weddings, the people enjoy the hotel, pool and hot tubs and often are up late at night, enjoying themselves

This was nothing about Florida. I only mentioned the location because most people would know it would be hot and humid in May, and not to provide AC whether it’s indoor or outdoor tent is bad planning. They had the reception outdoor too.

Hot and humid for reception while wearing formal attire and running out of food sounds rather unpleasant. I’m sorry for all involved. I’m sure the couple spent a lot of $$$$ on everything as did guests—too bad guests were not comfortable.

I was talking to someone recently who attended a wedding at a very pricey venue where they ran out of dinner plates, requiring the last table to use salad plates at the buffet. There was only one bar, and specialty cocktails were being individually mixed instead of having been batched, so the line was very long.

One of my nieces tried to go to a wedding this weekend, but couldn’t get there. Due to yesterday’s high winds, the ferries to the island were cancelled. Fortunately for the couple most guests arrived the day before, but what terrible luck.

Yay! My niece just got engaged! She’s going to try to have her wedding before my daughter’s, so it’s going to be so much fun to have a quick turn-around. My sister and I have been chatting up a storm about planning. And our girls have been talking up a storm. Love the synergy, and how happy they are for each other!

So…dilemma time…not sure how to address, I just know I’m a little sad/upset/irritated.

goskid 2 and fiance are marrying in September --they’ve been engaged for almost two years. Wedding will be in Wine Country --we’re all near there.

My Midwest mom, a very spry 85 year old told us almost a year ago that she wouldn’t be attending as she felt her H (87) was starting to age…and as he is almost deaf, he would not enjoy the wedding, as they are loud/they wouldn’t get to spend much time with Bride and Groom, it’s an evening wedding and they eat at 4pm, it’s an expensive venue, etc.. She’d rather come at another time and be able to spend time with the B&G. (Good luck with that—they are super scheduled with work and 9 other weddings this year!) I suggested she fly with one of my sibs. Alas, none of my siblings from back East are attending–citing cost. I get it–it is not inexpensive to stay in Wine country even with the room block, and flights are not cheap. She does not want to fly alone (can’t lift luggage, etc.) At the time, I was bummed (as was my son), but realized that I wouldn’t be able to spend much time with her either..and I really have no other family coming that could “escort” her to rehearsal, to wedding, reception, back and forth to airport, etc. So I had kind of made peace with that.

Mom’s H has recently lost a child and a few friends. Mom thought he was going downhill. He decided there was something on his bucket list (news to Mom) and he wanted them to do it…she said of course–whatever you want!. Turns out, in less than a week, they are leaving for a 2+ week river cruise in Europe!

While I know I should be happy for them that they are able to do it…I gotta say I’m a little bit hurt. A year ago, she says she can’t make it to her youngest grandkid’s wedding…but a year later, she can make a cruise in Europe next week??

I’m sure my S will be stoic..but I know he’s gonna be hurt…and it’s not gonna be me that tells him.

Am I over reacting?

From the way you explained it here, it sounds as if your mom might be surprised too that her H wants to make the long trip to Europe. If that’s the case, I can see her saying no to the long trip to the wedding , never imagining that a long trip is possible at all. I can also see a difference between the trip that they will be taking, where they will be somewhat catered to, versus going to your son’s wedding, which is not about them at all, and following their preferences would be a burden.

@gosmom -it’s not the same situation but…several years ago D and SIL got engaged and set a date for their wedding over a year in advance. ( wedding was taking place in Northern Virginia/ DC area). A bunch of family members from the Midwest planned to attend.
About 6 months before the wedding, one of the cousins ( who is close to D) was asked to be in a friend’s wedding in Illinois on the same day. She accepted that and was no longer attending D ‘s wedding. At first, I was a little annoyed as my family had always attended weddings and other events in Illinois even when we had to miss other things.

I told D and she was fine with it. I let it go. A few months later, my beloved FIL died and this cousin was the one who sat with S at the service, spent a lot of time with him, etc ( S was devastated). I was so very glad I never made a fuss about it.

I say let it go. Your mother has a point that she would not really spend much time with the bridal couple anyway. Your S and his fiancée might not even be that upset. And maybe she can see them another time when they are not so busy.

That explanation aside, I think I would feel the same way,and I’m sorry for your hurt. Maybe if the cruise goes well they could come for a visit a few days before, have lunch with the B& G the day before the wedding, attend the wedding ceremony only, and then either go home the next day? That way the aren’t doing too much and have some quiet one on one time.

I would be hurt too. I’m so sorry!

It’s understandable that you’d feel hurt. But perhaps it is her way to unconsciously not be a burden to you during all the excitement of the wedding. (My father’s parents attended my wedding. My mother’s parents, who lived in our town, did not. Honestly it did make my mother’s day much easier.)

I’m sorry for the hurt — but I hope you and the wedding couple get beyond that and are just happy that the elders are able to make their own plans and hopefully will be able to see the young couple at a different time. It’s actually easier on you to not have to worry about entertaining the elders and the cruise company and travel agent can cater to their needs for their trip.

@gosmom not you are not wrong. And not overreacting to be sad.

2 things. In the archives I’ve described that my H and I drove my in-laws across the country for our D’s wedding. Different circumstances but I was sad that the in-laws and my bil didn’t coordinate that he would bring them. My sibling brought my mom and was “responsible” for her and that was a relief.

I wonder if her reluctance to come is
because none of her other kids will be there and that she knows how busy you will be. Or fear of coming by herself. I know that for some people, they do not like to venture out by themselves.

Also not a wedding story. My own D has gone to her cousins 3 times in the last year. I know my niece puts on the pressure for D to attend her life events.

My mil turns 90 next week. I told D that we are having a small dinner party. Her response was I wish I could come. Let me send grandma some cookies.

Why is it that you can fly to your cousins 3 times in a year but not for grandma’s 90th? I haven’t said anything. D has a lot going on and she doesn’t need any more pressure but geez
