2021-2022 USC Transfer

It’s still really annoying having to plan everything at the last minute. I would just hate not getting in after all this long wait, it would break me. Good luck to your daughter!

I feel you, I think it’s good to have everything planned out for your backup school. I just really hope we both get in after they made us wait this long lol

I read in the Welcome to USC brochure for transfers that doing a study abroad at one of USC’s partner schools could be an option. Does that not apply to junior transfers?

I didn’t even know it was an option. I thought it was primarily an option for freshmen spring admits (like that American University at Paris). I do know that USC’s traditional study abroad options would not be possible because you need to have a USC GPA before applying to those programs. Hmm, definitely sounds like a good question to ask your AO.

Village is full unless a random spot comes up here or there. For those accepted in late May, junior transfers, or not yet, you should be looking at outside housing.

It could be an option, however, the challenge is classes that will transfer over as once you get to upper level, those need to be done at USC. CS and engineering majors had more of a challenge at the study abroad schools because they didn’t have a large selection of classes that worked except the low level things, but they needed the math and physics classes causes they are pre-reqs to so many things. I would email your advisor as your particular situation and what you have remaining to take is unique to you.

It’s been like this forever, it’s an awful process. I think USC takes transfers relucantly, as years ago it was a very small group, then Nikias, one of the former presidents, opened the gates to more transfers and frankly, it wasn’t received well at the time. They aren’t a UC, which is no excuse, but they just weren’t set up for a large transfer group (physically and still mentally), and now seem to use it to fill spots more than anything. This year is not unique, it has been like this for the many years I have followed along. I personally know students that bailed after getting in very early and very late, but not getting housing in either situation, and the transfer report not coming as @zettasyntax mentioned, until right before orientation. It just depends on how bad someone wants the USC degree and if it is worth tolerating the waiting.

I am pretty certain that on campus housing won’t be an option, so I think those accepted at end of May or not accepted yet have to factor that in to planning and decisions.

I get the tempation to withdraw, but can you mentally withdraw and go on with your life for the next week or so (maybe you will hear!) and see how you feel without it as an option? I know it’s easier said than done, but can you just tell yourself it is out, without pushing the button and see how you feel?

@KB10001 Post edit - I think we crossed posted - great minds think alike ha. Sounds like a great plan!

I think if you have this requirement on your admission letter and aren’t hitting it, emailing your advisor with some kind of explanation would be good. Remember, you are competiting for a spot with people that did hit the mark, so just using covid as the reason may not be that compelling. And don’t blame a bad professor, that never flies. They want to know you can succeed under challenging circumstances. You may get to college and get mono or have other issues pose themselves in your life, they want to see you can work around what life throws you.

I do think I can and will do just that and always appreciate your helpful information, insight and suggestions. I guess at the end of the day, the hardest part is knowing I am unimportant to them and trying to be excited and pay them an astronomical amount of money feeling this way. I want to feel good about it and I want to feel as though the school is just as blessed to have me on their campus as I am to be there. I guess that is just too much to ask.

Oh and that mid-July is the standard line to get people off the phone and to quit calling. It will only be that long for a few, unless of course they drag their heels, which does seem to be the way this year. (I get it’s hard for them to plan as well with all the covid updates and necessary changes all the time.) But hopefully over the next couple weeks (and even end of this week) they will start dribbling out some more acceptances. And if it’s a rejection, get it overwith already!

Can I ask you how many more classes did you have to take at USC specifically? Was it the 64 credits or was it more than that? You can direct message me to keep it private if needed.

Do you know of anyone that was in my situation that was able to graduate on time without completely selling their soul/killing their GPA? I can take one extra class in each semester and take another in Wintermester, Maymester, or summer if needed. Is it attainable?

I took 20 classes at USC. I took classes spring 2016, summer 2016, fall 2016, spring 2017, and summer 2017. I didn’t pass one course though, so I had to take it twice (didn’t do much better the second time around), so that number could have gone down by a couple classes had I not messed up with that course.

It may be if you are willing to pay for it. Taking 18-21 per semester (over 18 you pay per additional credit), and summer courses. Maymester often overlaps with summer courses so can’t always do both. My D has done Maymester twice, it’s expensive but she needed the credits for her double major. You pay for it at the time u pay spring semester tuition. There is a gpa mark that gets over 18 and up to 21 included but that has to be from USC gpa so that wouldn’t apply for awhile. It may be a year, don’t remember off the top of my head.

Oh here it is: have earned a cumulative USC GPA of at least 3.750 based on the completion of at least 24.0 USC units (12.0 USC units for transfer students)**

What about wintermesters? Are those an option?

They don’t have those.

Alright, thank you so much for letting me know.

Hi everyone, I haven’t been on here in ages but just wanted to update- I was admitted on May 28th to the School of Cinematic Arts as a Media Arts & Practice major!!! USC (and SCA specifically) has been my dream school ever since I was in 5th grade, and nearly everything I’ve done since then has been in hopes of impressing admissions and getting into the world’s best film school. It still feels surreal that I was accepted to my first-choice major at my dream school. However, unless financial aid comes through with nearly a full ride (which I’m sure won’t happen), I will be attending Michigan State University in the fall for the same major! I had already committed to MSU before USC decisions came out, and I have a lovely roommate and housing figured out already, so I’m psyched for the fall and really happy with my choice. I’ll keep y’all posted if I change my mind and end up in SoCal instead! Good luck to anyone who hasn’t heard back yet!!

Wait do you mean they care if you succeed under challenging circumstances and work your way around what life throws you? Because if so then that might explain a lot of things for me. My AO knew (with the homelessness situation) i was in a very tight spot and I couldn’t understand why they would SGR me still. And I recently received another email (not the regular one) about SGR from the director of admissions in SCA that wanted me to send my grades to her as well when they are out. Do you think it might have anything to do with this? I’m pretty certain I’ll earn a 4.0 this semester too

MSU is such a GREAT school if I was in state I would have gone there ages ago. Congrats on the acceptance too!! I also applied to sca but waiting for my spring grades.

I’ve been to the summer camp at msu and a lot of my friends were taking the courses for that major. Out of my college experiences/summer camps etc MSU has been the BEST at every aspect. The student body, professors and everything really felt like family. It is the only school that I still have long time friends in. You are very lucky :))
