I definitely think that giving them a bye was a problem. The solution is to rank the teams and seed them appropriately. Give the power conferences a guaranteed spot if you want but not a guaranteed bye. They need to mirror March Madness.
I’ve had the selection show on in the background all afternoon and am loving hearing from all the coaches and players.
I’ve had it on in the background some of the morning. Although I missed part of it, because of my workout this AM.
I’ve been waffling in between the March Madness method versus giving the best 4 league champions the bye. I think Texas and Ohio State are stronger teams than Boise State and Arizona State (certainly more talent, by a lot), but with 13 games as a sample size, it gets really difficult.
I’m obviously a Michigan fan, but if Ryan Day doesn’t have a brain fart and challenges the Michigan secondary on the outside and OSU’s QB Will Howard doesn’t have a brain fart in Eugene and gets down and calls a timeout before the clock runs out, then OSU would be the #1 seed.
Belichick to UNC seems like a bizarre match to me…will be interesting to see if he has the patience for college kids, college schedules, etc. I am guessing assistants will handle most of the recruiting.
I always loved this game growning up as an Air Force brat - so do I root for Navy fliers or as an Army Air Corp decendent root for Army? Just the pagentry/tradition is sooooooo needed right now!
He has college experience. His father was a college coach (Navy) when Bill was young and he was always around the students, studying film. He also was good friends with Nick Sabin. His daughter was a college coach and he helped her. He also has much more experience working with agent than most college coaches, and now with NIL, every player has an agent.
I think the harder part might be him getting along with administration, not the players. Robert Kraft let Bill do (and spend) whatever he wanted)
Today’s NIL college teams are more pro than college - so, the kids have have more pull like in the NFL and the coach becomes more of a manager. Not sure what this college football world is going to look like over the next 5 years with in/out portal and $$$$$$ flying all over the place and colleges begging for more donations. Really need to drop the NIL as that money is not represented in the “go fund me” program it college ball has turned into - there is very little Name Image Likeness in the funding. It’s frustrating to a season ticket holder to have them beg for money as well. They won’t get both and may lose what they get!
i know his dad coached at UNC and Navy. And he and Nick Saban have a long standing friendship.
The interesting differences to me are : 1) college players have much more limited practice time as compared to pro players; 2) some college players may not be quite as mature and; 3) can he adjust his complex pro schemes to fit collegiate players. As I said, it will be interesting to watch.
Best Heisman winner selection in decades IMO. They still laud Charles Woodson because of his two-way work at Michigan, which I respect. Woodson is one of the best to do it. But his work was not in Hunter’s zip code on the offensive side of the ball. Hunter will likely go T5 in the draft on his corner ability. Here is his resume for 2024:
1443 snaps. Almost hard to believe.
92 catches, many of which are as athletic as you’ll see.
1,152 yards
14 receiving tds; 1 rushing td
31 tackles
15 passes defended (5th in FBS despite being avoided like the plague)
4 ints (again, despite being avoided like the plague)
1 forced fumble, on the goal line with the game in the balance on that single play.
Most players don’t have the stamina to even try this. Both positions involve running up and down the field on every play whether the ball is coming your way or not. He didn’t just try it, he did it and was elite on both sides of the ball. He would get your attention even if he only did one of them.
Jeanty is a nice player, but come on. One good game against Oregon and the rest is based on a Mountain West schedule. Anyone who thinks he should have had the Heisman because he’s done something historical with his stats should review this bit of history:
We have not seen a player like Hunter since … well, I can’t remember one during my lifetime. Woodson, and a little more recently Devin Hester played WR and corner for the Hurricanes, but nobody has done it like Hunter. Not to be too critical of the Boise State kid, but running backs are relatively plenty in this game and there have been many who are as good or better than Jeanty. I don’t have any skin in this game but to not give it to Hunter would make this trophy ridiculous, as the Thorpe award has been forever.
