2024 college football thread

Bet we will see a lot more of this down the road. A thorn in the side of the game.

University is coming out saying they did not promise NIL money to the QB. I was wondering why the athlete would not get this in a written contract? The athlete has to sign when they make final commitment to a team, why would they not insist on a written contract from the school? The kid has an agent and he didn’t get anything in writing?

I’m thinking there’s an extortion element. UNLV is in a vulnerable position with the PAC12 drama. And the football team is winning games with a shot at making the playoffs. Unfortunately for him, he sucks as a QB and no other FBS school will take him.

Yes, I think you are correct. This is sad. I wonder what the rep of the agent is? However, regarding you last sentence, I’m guessing you haven’t watched my Auburn Tigers implode this season? We’ve gone from excited to appalled to just laughing at ourselves and trying to decide if the drive down to the game is worth the uncomfortable afternoon sun and heat.

miami was bailed out w reversal td call on hail mary v va tech last night. there was no specific angle proving otherwise. unfortunate. home cooking by the refs and top 10 team favoritism

The agreement was with a group of boosters, operating under an LLC or some other loose agreement. It is the group that didn’t pay, not the university. Even if there was a contract all the LLC has to do is dissolve and there is no way to enforce the contract since none of the boosters promised anything from their own funds. The schools aren’t promising NIL money, it is outside groups.

The NLI is for freshmen and binds them to play for 1 year but it isn’t actually required. I know students who have played and received scholarships without signing an NLI. This guy played at Holy Cross so he was in the transfer portal, not coming from hs. I have no idea what they sign coming out of the portal, but it probably promised him his scholarship, books, and a stipend, similar to an NLI.

The NLI contract was boilerplate. The only things that were added were the athlete’s name and the amount of the award. There were boxes to check for each award, like tuition, books, room and board. There was no place for extra promises of NIL money. Is any school giving NIL money to the players directly, or is it all coming from sponsors and boosters and outside contracts?

I think this guy would have been better off just playing out this year and getting the $100k built into his pro contract. This is a really bad look and the pro teams don’t like players with attitude about contracts.

I enjoyed reliving the “Kick-Six” game; I was rooting for Auburn in that game (“The enemy of my enemy is my friend.”)

Here is one of my favorite upset endings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8SmOYEOL3s. The key two plays at the end of the game are shown, with each one broadcast by the CBS announcers (Gary Danielson was not able to show Tebow-love in this game), by the highly professional UT announcers, and finally by the Georgia homers.

At the end of the first TD, one of the Georgia announcers says, “Flags have just come out for excessive celebration, but who cares at this point?” Well, he was about to care, and very quickly. Lesson: Never tempt the football gods with hubris, especially at the end of a game.

indisputable video evidence actually helps but ole miss still gets upset at home. uk biggest win since 1978

I’m so glad that I caught the end of that game. I’m still getting used to caring about the SEC.

Kentucky played Georgia tough earlier this season, losing 13-12. They will give more SEC teams trouble this year, I have no doubt.

The author said he could remember where he watched the games. I remember the CU-Michigan game. I was watching with my brother and nephew, who was about 18 months old. We were teaching him ‘touchdown’. But what I remember best was the constant talk about whether to kick an extra point or go for two. “if is it 16 -10, go for 1, but 17 to 12 go for two” There were just statistics for every score possibility. At the end, when Colorado scored there was no time on the clock. They couldn’t clear the field for either a kick or a play for 2 and we were all laughing “if you are up by 5, and there is no time on the clock, and the game is over, do you go for 2?” In the end, they just ended the game.

Miracle in Michigan. Same date this year, CU threw a hail mary as time expired to tie the game and won in OT.

Fun to watch!!

Oh, that was brutal. And the tease of a potential tie at the end … to literally throw it away. :weary::weary::weary::heart::black_heart::heart::black_heart:

We drop to no. 2. I could make an argument for staying no. 1, but I always like being ranked lower.

Can’t say that I blame you. GA was looking pretty sad.

CU wins! They were a 13 (or 15, depending on the line) point underdog and won 48-21. Believe it or not, still a nail biter.
