My son’s friend got off the UCLA (OOS) waitlist yesterday
Someone on Reddit says they got off the waitlist at Wake for accounting this afternoon around 2 pm and have 24 hours to respond.
Would be surprised if that was entirely true, since the undergrad business school at Wake requires a secondary application. There are no direct admits into accounting.
I get how this can feel confusing or even frustrating, especially when colleges say waitlists aren’t ranked, yet some students get off multiple. But here’s my take:
If a student is waitlisted at several schools in the same selectivity range, that usually is their target range. They were already competitive enough for admission, it just came down to space. So when seats open, those same schools revisit strong applicants who fit their class needs. It’s not random, it’s a delayed version of what would’ve happened in regular admissions.
For example, my daughter was denied at schools ranked in the 10–20 range and waitlisted at only one top 10 school. She applied to twenty schools in total. Among them, she was admitted or waitlisted at schools ranked 80 and below. For the 30–40 range, she applied to five schools, including Richmond, and was waitlisted at all. Ultimately, she got off 4 of her ten waitlists, and all five were from schools in the 30–40 range or slightly more selective (UF, Wake, Richmond, Rochester and William & Mary who had accepted her as spring pathway). That pattern revealed where she was most competitive. The other five schools were less selective or lower-ranked (but still good) private institutions that likely yielded protected and assumed she’d enroll elsewhere. Same file, different responses, shaped by each school’s needs and predictions.
It’s really no different from hearing about a student who’s admitted to five Ivies or lands full scholarships at multiple public universities. That’s their range, whether in regular admission or waitlist season. Strong applicants remain strong, and the results usually reflect that, just on a different timeline. But sometimes we don’t cast a wide enough net with our target schools and end up waiting on that one outcome, while others, equally viable, might have welcomed us, too.
Looking back at the post, the person on Reddit said they were admitted for accounting at another university — but got off the waitlist at Wake, and I assumed for the same major but they didn’t actually say so.
Those are some good choices. Did she decide to take an offer off the waitlist?
They said the were choosing UF.
It looks like S25 received an offer today from Skidmore College with a generous financial aid package included (I only saw the financial aid letter than references a call from Admissions). He is not planning to accept, but sharing that there is some movement on Skidmore’s list.
Thank you, she took the offer for Wake Forest.
Looks like Tulane is still pulling from the waitlist. My S25 got an email on Friday.
If you’re willing to share, curious of your sons intended program or if there’s anything particular about his application/potential admission (sport, music, debate, etc).
What did the email say? Did it ask if he’s still interested or just notify him that he had been accepted?
The email said to respond yes if he 101% ready to commit to Tulane, withdraw from his current school and understand that all aid/scholarship is exhausted. Once he does that an offer letter will be sent and a $1000 deposit required within 48 hours. He’s passing and is happy with where he has committed.
curious… when Tulane pulled your son, did they admit him to the fall class, or one of the spring options?
The email didn’t specifically say but I assume Fall
My kid was admitted yesterday off the SUNY Binghamton waitlist, but as the financial package – even tho we’re in state – is double what she has elsewhere, she will decline.
A student from our high school was just accepted to Brown. Environmental Studies major.
I just heard from a reliable source that Northeastern has gone to their waitlist 3 times already this year.
Multiple campuses, IIRC.
Northeastern has accepted students off the waitlist for NU In each year. This year it appears they have accepted some to the Boston campus.
