2029 Princeton Waitlist Thread

Might as well start one. Anyone else waitlisted? Thoughts on this year’s chances?

More often than not a few kids get off the WL, specially since IMO they are trying to control class size a little better. Last year was the first year since the pandemic where they hit the planned numbers.

In any case, it’s certainly not something to count or even hope for. Part of the problem is that even when kids would ideally opt for another school on their list, the financial aid at Princeton is hard to walk away from.

waitlist warrior here  i really hope with how unpredictable things are this year more people get admitted off waitlist… but it still seems like the odds are pretty low :((

FYI. Just saw on Reddit that they started admitting people off the waitlist yesterday (May 2). Looks like they under-enrolled so we might have some luck this year!

This is likely by design as they got burned with over enrollment in 22 and want to control class size.

I have a feeling that the chances of off the waitlist might be higher this year too. While I don’t know every case, out of around 20 students I personally know who were admitted to multiple HYPS ( P+Y, P+S. P+H, P+YS, P+HS, P+HYS )schools, only 2 chose Princeton.

I don’t know all the situations, but it seems like there were more students this year ended up choosing other options. That might explain why Princeton’s waitlist started moving earlier than usual.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Hey guys!! Any update on waitlist movement? Intl here, waiting.

Yeah. It’s also possible that international enrollment might be down at US schools.

When can we expect Princeton waitlist to close?

Hi AviPraMar - can you post the Reddit link?

Thanks!

Hi Tytitu
Curious what you do and how you know so many students who were admitted to multiple HYPS.
Not doubting - just wondering.

Thanks

(1) Admission results from my DD’s school
(2) Admissions outcomes of students who attended the same summer camp as my DDs last year. (Last year, one of my dd participated in a highly selective STEM camp as a rising senior, and another took part in a highly selective writing workshop as a rising junior).
(3) From parents I met at local HYPS events for admitted students
(4) Results from the kids of my friends

The rub is that we have no idea how your anecdotal data compares to the total set this year, or in prior years. Princeton does plan that 25% or so of admitted students will go elsewhere. With that said, I wouldn’t be surprised if international commits are lower than initially forecast (I’m not sure their typical international yield.)

I’m not claiming to know every case, but among the ones I do know, only two students chose Princeton when they had multiple HYPSM offers.
There may very well be other places I’m not aware of where more students with multiple offers chose Princeton. Isn’t it natural for us to think through all these different possibilities?

Of course, Princeton adjusted its number of admits based on closely monitoring yield rates, but it’s worth noting that among HYPS, Princeton was the only one to start pulling from the waitlist even before Decision Day.
The waitlist started moving on one day before the decision day I know two kids who were admitted off the waitlist . They’re really smart and outstanding kids and committed to Princeton.
Did they receive fewer commitments than expected? Could that have played a role as well? The issue with international students isn’t unique to Princeton.
These are just some of the possibilities to consider.

Again, I think it is more likely that Princeton is tightly controlling yield to not over enroll. This year there was yet again another curve ball with some peer schools going back to tests while Princeton stayed TO. Each time there is a change like that yield becomes harder to predict so it makes sense that they would err on the safe side.

Sure (re: waitlist offer on May 2). This is the Reddit link: Reddit - The heart of the internet

Hi guys, any new movements with the waitlist?

Thanks, AviPraMar.

A student from NJ got off the Princeton waitlist today during school 5/20/2025. He has posted about it on Reddit. Trying to decide bet Stanford where he was committed and Princeton:
