To zparentalunit: I know this is a stressful time of year for everyone involved in the application process, but out of curiosity why are you posting questions, comments about W&M on the UVa forum?

On that same vein:

Out of curiosity, why?

Dean J is correct there are many many many private colleges with unbelievably slick promotional materials. (We had two applying at the same time and received stacks of these in the mail)

Isn’t this a contradiction of what you originally stated about wanting your D to go to W&M?

I wish your D well in this process and UVa is an excellent place for her to be as is W&M.

2007 - March 30
2008 - March 28
2009 - March 26
2010 - March 26
2011 - March 4

Disclaimer: The above statement is just a joke. Do not over analyze this fellow members of CC . Do not misinterpret it as me being “inpatient” or “ungrateful”…

This is my first day posting on forum. I didn’t know I couldn’t mention another college in conjunction with UVA in a post but she is choosing between both. Main reason I want her to go to W&M is it is the closest to our house. I am in no way insinuating it is a better school than UVA or vice versa. I know, I know…proximity to parents is not the main reason for her to pick a school. But, given that both UVA and W&M are fabulous schools I want her to be fabulous AND closer. :-)

Apparently the word ‘slick’ has more of a negative connotation to readers than I was going for when I used that word. I am a systems consultant and, in 2011, I think use of the internet is an important and useful tool. I LOVE the little green check with ‘View Decision’ UVA has on SIS. We looked for it last night after I read something about it. I asked her to show me her W&M equivalent and she said there wasn’t one. So, to me, that isn’t so ‘slick’ or user friendly.

In the end I want her to go to the place SHE is happiest attending. I also don’t want to have to justify every darn thing I say on a forum when it is misconstrued. Maybe that is why I have only poked around and read things as a guest for about a week and didn’t register to post? I love getting answers to questions but do feel some are a bit too snippy. That just isn’t me.

I think this time of year makes parents and students way too anxious. No one’s post was snippy, it is your perception of it. If you took it that way, I apologize. I have never been rude on any post, my question as to ‘Why W&M?’ over UVa was an honest question. Also, when you used the word slick, which is why I quoted it, it sounded like you did not favor what UVa put out there, hence why you wanted your D to go to W&M. Dean J and I read it the same way, so maybe it was the way you phrased it that lead us to read more into it as a negative towards UVa. People post about W&M and UVa in the same forum/thread all the time. Since this is your first time posting here, you need to think about how you phrase things in writing so no one misunderstands what you mean, next post comments in the right forum (one of your post was clearly intended for W&M) and until April 1st gets here, relax.

zparentalunit - My mom is the same way about W&M! Although I live on my own, my parents wanted me to apply (as a transfer) to W&M in addition to UVA, because Williamsburg is considerably closer to their home than Charlottesville. Size was a big factor for me - I couldn’t see myself at a university barely larger than my high school (at least for undergrad).

Does UVA email or is it snail mail?
I get yelled at every time I ask if anything was in D’s email - “Mother, I will let you know!”
So, I’m not sure which it is…

She will log onto SIS and then click on View Decision. At this point a letter will pop up and say either she is in, waitlisted or the other that shall not be named.

I have to apologize for my interpretation of slick!

I was worried that my blog was being seen as some sort of coordinated marketing. I started blogging in secret in 2005. No one from the publications side tries to direct me or dictate my messages.

By the way, if we are able to notify early, a mass email will go out in addition to the update going on my blog.

No worries Dean J. My Mother did teach me “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all” and I listened. I wasn’t meaning to offend.

I think it is great you take such an active role and try to help stem rampant misconceptions…or possible misconceptions as it may be.

I’m rather sure I’m going to be rejected at UVA come April 1st. Not because of my stats (well possibly), but I just feel it. After that verbal lashing, I’ve given up. This is quite possibly one of the worst feelings ever.

UVAorBust I know it must be killing you, but being negative won’t help anything! I’ve read several of your posts, and evidently, this is YOUR school. Be positive. You applied and have all you need to get in. Get exaggeratively positive about it! As we say in cross country- GO HARD OR GO HOME.

Come decision day what songs are you guys going to play when/if we all get accepted? :)

I actually like the lyrics to Blazin by Nicki Minaj if you fit the song lyrics to the context of the college application process.

“How could it be, little me, Had the power to be, the best [applicant] in the league”

“so I exceed all [UVA’s] expectations”

“the [acceptance] contract is on but I am the addendum”

“I’m [a Cavalier] now, anybody with some money should invest now
Soccer moms need to organize a pep rall’
Your games over [those who doubted me], Gatorade, wet towel”

As much as I’d like to play “Hallelujah”, I will more than likely be playing “Another One Bites the Dust” or “You Don’t Always Get What You Want”.

If I get in, trust me, you will see some songs…
