Strong grades in Math and Science. Strong grades in Latin. Weak grades in English and Social Studies. Wants to Major in Math. We live in California. Please suggest colleges.
Attempted SAT twice - 1490 and 1540 (790 on Math in both attempts)
Thanks

Define “strong grades” and “weak grades”.
What are the careers of interest with a math degree (finance, operations research, teaching, etc.)?
For California public universities, calculate the three HS GPAs as described at GPA Calculator for the University of California – RogerHub so that others can make realistic suggestions. California public universities do not use SAT or ACT scores for admissions.
As and High Bs, all AP Science, Comp Sci A and calc 5s but English and History Cs.
He got AIME score. Won Latin competition. Strong Python programming.
Race : Asian, so this may not stand out.
Is there any chance for a college in California?
Of course. Many schools. You mean public ? You need to calculate the GPA but likely UCMerced and some secondary Cal State schools. Also some private and out of state.
What is the unweighted GPA? How many APs? What is your budget ? Why only CA where the SAT won’t matter in public schools.
I’m very confused. That’s why I have posted it. Please suggest anywhere else that will be a fit. Student loves Math.
Please provide the unweighted GPA off the transcript.
Neither the UCs or Cal State schools use the SAT. Private schools do and many out of state will.
But please give the GPA - is it a 3.0 or 3.5 or 3.8? This is a 4 for an A, 3 for a B, 2 for a C.
Add up the points and divide by # of classes.
And how much can you afford to spend on college?
You are not providing enough information - but I’m sure there will be plenty of schools for your student.
By using the above GPA calculator. It is 3.6. We will use all our resources to pay, giving education the highest priority possible.
It would be helpful if you stated the highest level of math your son will have completed as a high school student. For example, will he have taken multivariable calculus or linear algebra, such as through dual enrollment?
Multi variable calculus.
He does AoPS level complex Math and enjoys that
9 APs - AP calc BC, all 3 AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Comp Sci A, AP Psychology, AP Music Theory and AP Latin
You will use all your resources - does that mean you can afford $400,000 for four years?
For a math major, the where (in my opinion) won’t matter - it’s a tough major with great outcomes.
Here’s an example - and I’m not saying it’s right for your student - but U of Alabama - with his GPA and SAT, would be $20,000 a year. So that’s say $80,000.
USC - on the other hand, is $95,000 this year - so by the time you are done, if you are a full pay family, is $400,000.
So that’s $80,000 a year more.
Can you afford that? The career path might very well be similar.
There are many schools - in California and outside - whether close like the Arizona, Oregon, Colorado and more schools - that will have cost in between.
And there are many privates in California - from USC (unlikely) to U of Pacific, the religions (SCU, LMU, USD, etc.).
There are also more STEM focused schools - whether a School of Mines, WPI, RPI, etc…
Why the focus on CA? Would your student like UC Merced, Chico State, Cal State Fullerton, etc.
What is your budget - saying you will spend your resources is not a budget because if you can afford $20,000 a year, then you cannot afford $80K - and there will be fine schools in your price range.
And your student can do well from many and any school.
I’m sorry, but I don’t get how your son can score 750 on SAT verbal and get Cs in English and History. He clearly knows how to read. Can you elaborate a bit more on what you think may be going on?
Staying in a challenging Math environment is super important because hated school up till AoPS Math could be introduced. Enjoys and thrives in Math and science.
Deleted.
Our high school holds very high standards. It is difficult to score grades
how did he do on the AP tests for history and english?
AP world history was 2 (that is the only AP with that low a score rest all are 5). He did not take AP in English
What does going to college in California have to do with staying in a challenging math environment.
Every college with a math major, no matter where it is, will have a challenging math environment.
But college will be more than math - it’s about being well rounded.
But again - I mentioned some schools - or those ok for you? And what can you afford - not, we’ll pay anything - that’s not an answer.
Because if you can afford anything, then it’s great - but if you can’t, then you can only pay what you have to pay.
You are not giving helpful answers - to assist you in finding schools.
But with a 3.6 and 1500+ SAT, there will be many - but they will not be the top schools that you hope for. But there will be many schools inside and outside California - and that won’t impact “a challenging math environment”/
I have gone through these type of lists and it confuses me all the more. None of them talk about a child who is strong Math and science with weak in English. Looks like those top colleges Math are meant for well rounded kids and not mine. Mine is too Math and science focused.
