[]Where else you are applying or have already applied:

[
]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight:

any idea on why your son got his decision now? Region, grades, etc?

The admissions counselors are the only people who really know the answer to that. It’s probably a mixture of region, randomness, and application contents; the student showed enthusiasm and has good grades and a score within the middle-50 - respectable, but less likely to be using as a safety.

does the admissions release acceptances right up until december 15th for EA? like say it’s the 14th and I still havent heard. should I expect a deferral or do people get accepted on that last day?

From what I can gather from last year’s admissions thread, people were accepted last year up to and including December 15th.

Yeah well true, but does it have any trend on grades or location?

You know, I really don’t. I haven’t seen many under $20K for the last couple of years, but that could be because CC skews to the higher stat type students. Also, those might come more at the RD round, and again we see fewer postings from that, especially as regards the contents of the letters. @Illinoisdad16

Other:

• []State (if domestic applicant): NY
[
]Country (if international applicant):
[]School Type: public
[
]Ethnicity: White/Latino

[
]Income Bracket: > $200,000
[]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Latino, Bi-lingual
[
]My app was completed October 26. I heard back last night.

Reflection:

• []Strengths: ECs and recommendations
[
]Weaknesses: GPA + Test Scores
[]Why do I think I was accepted: I think I was accepted because I come from a very rigorous high school that sends a fair amount of kids to Tulane, and my extracurricular were very well dispersed yet involved. I know Tulane doesn’t superscore but since I sent in two scores with a superscore of 31, I may have helped my case slightly.
[
]Comments: I’d like to start off by thanking the academy…

Kind of concerned, I submitted my application mid September and still haven’t heard back.

@greengoat5, me too. I have credentials similar to many who have heard back within a few days or a couple of weeks. It’s very disheartening. While I understand that there may be a randomness to when the applications are read, when some are read in 4 days vs. over two months makes me feel as if they must have at least viewed mine by now and it’s sitting in the “maybe” pile. A school mate of mine, with lesser credentials, was admitted a few weeks ago. I visited Tulane in September and absolutely loved it, so the seeming lack of similar enthusiasm is disappointing to say the least!

Has anyone from the Idaho/Montana area heard back yet?

]My app was completed October 16. I heard back 11/29

Reflection:

• []Strengths: Common App essay and extra curriculars
[
]Weaknesses: Class rank and Tulane essay
[]Why do I think I was accepted: I sent in two ACT scores, and although Tulane doesn’t superstore, my superstore is 32 so that probably helped. I had a very strong common app essay and my extracurricular leadership skills are strong. Also have taken a rigorous high school curriculum.
[
]Where else I have applied: Applied ED to NYU. Also applied to UNC Chapel Hill, UCLA, UC Irvine, Loyola Maryland, and Fordham.

Reflection:

[ul]
[]Strengths: Test score, essays
[
]Weaknesses: GPA, extracurriculars
[]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My essays were probably the biggest asset I had in the application process. Going SCEA was a great way to show interest, but talking about the history of the school, it’s relationship with New Orleans, and I want to do at Tulane makes SCEA much more significant from an admissions perspective.

Merit Scholarship: I’m not sure yet

School/major: Studio Art

Objective:

• []SAT I (breakdown): Didn’t take
[
]ACT (breakdown): 31 (31 E, 29 M, 32 R, 32 S)
[]SAT II (place score in parentheses): didn’t submit any
[
]Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): School doesn’t have GPA
[]Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn’t have class ranking
[
]AP (place score in parentheses): School doesn’t offer APs
[]IB (place score in parentheses): School doesn’t offer IBs
[
]Senior Year Course Load: Advanced Biology, Calculus AB, Spanish Lit, Emotionology, Politics and Science of Color, Senior Studio Art, Surrealism
[]Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): None

Subjective:

• []Extracurriculars (place leadership in parentheses): Soccer team (JV and Varsity and captain of JV), tennis (JV and Varsity), JV basketball, varsity fencing, club team swimmer, swim classes, basketball managing somatic cell yoga and infantile developmental movement work, founder of the Cooking Club, project/work on environmental sustainability and food sustainability in impoverished/underprivileged communities, language immersion trips, volunteer work at an animal shelter, writing programs, summer art school, swim camps, student ambassadors, food and hunger advocacy club, tennis camps, lifeguard training and certification.
[]Job/Work Experience:
[
]Volunteer/Community Service: I volunteered at an animal shelter in Chicago for two weeks. I wrote my community service essay on this experience.
[]Summer Activities: I spent five weeks on a Spanish language immersion program, as well as in art school, and a few weeks in swim camps and tennis camps. I also spent some time interning for congress people, volunteering at animal shelters, and attending writing programs.
[
]Essays: I’m not sure. My “Why Tulane” and my service learning essays were both very strong. I have mixed feelings about my common app essay, even though I’ve been told that it’s a very strong essay that’ll get me places. Wrote about feeling un-American due to overwhelming white influence and how I learned that this was not the case and found my own American identity.
[]Teacher Recommendations: Probably very strong. I had a very strong connection with my biology teacher and my history teacher knows me very well and attended Stanford and UChicago for writing, so feeling pretty good. 10/10
[
]Counselor Rec: I meet with him for two hours every week, but I still feel like he doesn’t know me very well as a person, but nonetheless wrote a very strong recommendation. 9/10
[]Additional Rec: I had two additional recommendation letters from an elective teacher and an art teacher. My electives teacher knows me very well, probably better than most people I know, and definitely wrote a heartfelt recommendation that really helped illustrate who I am as a person. My art teacher and I also have a strong connection, and she knows my artistic style very well, and so I’m confident that they both wrote excellent letters of recommendation.
[
]Interview: Didn’t have one.

Other:

• []State (if domestic applicant): NY
[
]Country (if international applicant):
[]School Type: Private
[
]Ethnicity: Asian and Pacific Islander
[]Gender: Male
[
]Income Bracket: It’s complicated
[]Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection:

• []Strengths: Essays, recommendation letters, extracurriculars
[]Weaknesses: ACT scores and grades. Straight C’s freshman year (don’t do that whoever is reading this)
[
]Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My essays really demonstrated a love for service learning, which is a big thing at Tulane, and also detailed how I would make the most of my time there. I also think that they don’t get many quirky Asian kids who do art and play 20 sports. They way I present myself comes across as unique, I think, whether it be for the worse or for the best. My letters of recommendation also helped a lot, I believe.
[]Where else you are applying or have already applied: Applied ED to Duke and EA to both SUNY Binghamton and UMiami. If Duke doesn’t work out, I’m also applying to Northwestern, Pitzer, UPenn, and USC.
[
]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I was very worried that I would not be admitted since most of my friends have already gotten their acceptance letters. I was having a rough day and decided to check at 2AM and lo and behold. Even though this is my safety school, I was extremely thrilled to have gotten in, because I wasn’t sure if I would. Don’t let anything stop you, as cheesy as that sounds, and really just apply wherever feels right. You honestly don’t know what each college is looking for each year, and this year it just might be you. Don’t let a standardized test score (ew) or GPA dictate your future, and honesty just make the most of wherever you go.

Decision: Accepted
