Well, that’s a bummer. It seems most other accepted students were awarded scholarships.
For anyone interested:
Deferred, 30 ACT & 3.7 W GPA (school doesn’t calculate UW)
Didn’t do “Why Tulane” but I did do the personal statement (non-commonapp)
Showed absolutely no interest, I kind of applied on a whim in July because I wanted to see what an application was like
Good luck to all!
Most with his stats, at least. I would not hesitate to reach out to the admissions office and ask for reconsideration. Obviously they may have meant to send that, it is not for me to know. But like anything involving humans, and especially during a flurry of responses like they have now, mistakes get made. You have nothing to lose, just be polite and don’t come across as entitled, just curious given that you have seen similar stats get merit awards and you thought perhaps this was an oversight during a very busy time.
The other option is to wait until his first semester grades are in, if you think they will be better than his GPA so far. Always nice to ask for consideration when you have something positive to add to the pot. But I would definitely appeal that, it just does not feel right, unless there is something else in his file we cannot know affecting the decision.
Thank you @fallenchemist. Do you recommend I call or e-mail?
One other question - I’m sorry! Could the fact that he didn’t hear anything about merit scholarships have to do with the fact that he applied for the Paul Tulane scholarship?
I would email, and cc: the Director of Admissions. I would restate your son’s stats in the email.
No, the PTA application would have no bearing. In fact, virtually all DHS ans PTA winners got partial merit awards first.
Deferred today
Does anyone know what percent was deferred/how many deferred people Tulane accepts?

To post 836. It’s possible that they sensed that Tulane wasn’t a top choice for you. It’s also possible they saw you as overqualified and therefore less likely to attend. We had one student at our high school who was accepted at Harvard & Stanford a few years ago. He was denied admissions at some of his safety schools. This happens sometimes.
@fallenchemist i was deferred, and i plan on emailing my regional Tulane admissions counselor pretty soon. what should I include in this email? and also is PTA still an option? i actually wrote pretty nice essays for that scholarship lol.
Thanks!
Tell them that Tulane is a top school and ask what you can do to improve your application. Also, remember that they will most likely keep your email so if you end up applying as a transfer student later on make sure the email is super nice. It might help you in the future.

I answered the PTA question just a few posts up from yours, but yes you are still in it. As for what to write, etc. please Google TulaneJeff blog and look at his latest post.
Daughter accepted last week with $27K award. 2240 SAT, 3.8 UW, Great ECs, very solid essays. She wrote the Why Tulane essay and spent some time on it by reading quite a bit about her planned major and community/university involvement. Very likely she will be in NOLA next year.
Gosh I’m so nervous! It’s getting close to the deadline and I know that they usually save deferrals for last so I’m preparing for the worst. Then again, my application was completed a week late due to my SAT taking forever, so I’m hoping that maybe there’s still a small chance to be accepted. My gpa isn’t stellar, but I think my Common App essay and Tulane essay were very good and creative. I went to my counselor’s (Neill Aguiluz) visit at my high school and his regional reception. Both my debate coach and science teacher know me well and adore me, so I’m sure they wrote excellent recs. Applied SCEA.
Fingers crossed! And good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back!
P.S. Has anyone with Neill Aguiluz as a counselor heard back?
Good luck you sound like an excellent candidate!
@saules and @fallenchemist thanks! i’ll try to email soon.
Do they release the deferrals randomly throughout this next week?
