Fantastic, @nycapp!!
@nycapp like X 10,000,000,000 So happy for you. I know you were stressed. Not anymore
Hi! You seem really knowledgeable about Tulane and all of the application processes, so I was wondering if I could get some feedback on my decision? I applied by the early action deadline in November, and heard that I was deferred yesterday. I want to know what I can do in order to increase my chances of being accepted in the spring?
My unweighted GPA is 3.95, weighted is 5.05
Superscored SAT is 2110
10 AP classes including this year
Extracurriculars are tennis team all four years (varsity captain senior year)
varsity softball team all four years (captain senior year)
high school symphonic and marching bands
part time job
animal shelter volunteering
National Honor Society
Spanish Honor Society
President of club helping to sponsor children in third-world countries
Thanks so much!
**Also I applied Early Action, but I could actually have applied Single Choice Early Action, so should I mention that?
Congrats @nycapp !!
Still haven’t heard anything
Im feeling another burst of deferrals soon !!!
ACCEPTED
SAT: 1850
GPA: 3.4 W
The SCEA thing is in the past, bringing up that you could have but didn’t doesn’t seem to me to show interest but just invites the question of why didn’t you?
Otherwise I recommend following what Jeff fom admissions says in his blog: http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2011/12/ive-been-deferred-now-what.html
I haven’t received my decision yet even though I turned it in by November 15th…Everyone else who applied in my class has received their decisions so I’m kinda stressing! Am I looking too much into this or do you think it means I’m not gettng in? Sorry if this is a dumb question
Hi, fallenchemist. Thank you for your informative posts about Tulane. I hope you won’t mind if I bother you with one more question I can’t seem to find the answer to in the forum:
My son applied EA in early November and his admit decision showed on the website a few weeks later. He got his letter yesterday along w/$32K Presidential Scholarship (which I understand is the highest award they give (other than the full-tuition scholarships). He applied for both the Paul Tulane and DHS Scholarships. My question is this: Putting aside his individual qualifications, do you have any idea about what percentage of students in his category who apply for the Paul Tulane or DHS end up getting one of them? I know you’ve written that there are usually about 1000-1500 applicants for each (perhaps more this year w/the overall upswing in applications). But are there many of those who have gotten the Presidential Scholarship?
@sleepyparent I heard today
You are asking the right question for sure. Put another way, how many of those 1000+ applications are from students that have stats that won’t make it past the initial screening. No one except Tulane knows that for sure. Understandably they don’t make it public. I can tell you that about 10-15% of the incoming class come in with stats that are in the Presidential and Premier range, which is really who he is competing with for the scholarships. But we are dealing with applicants here, not enrolled students. So just a guess, I think that probably about half have the top stats needed to really be viable candidates for the awards. The other complication is that people apply for both, as your son did. So who knows. Maybe a 1 in 6 or one in 7 chance if you went just by the number of stat qualified applicants? Just a guess. So still a tough get, but better than 1 in 10-15.
Thanks, @fallenchemist
@dirtysprite2 I applied around November 1st and got my decision in the mail yesterday. I’m from upstate NY

[li]General Comments/Advice/Hindsight: I’m pretty disappointed but I kind of saw this coming. I’m definitely going to contact my admissions counselor and let them know that Tulane is one of my top schools and I would love to attend. So I guess my advice to truly show interest in the school. Also, I probably should’ve applied for PTA or DHS.[/li][/ul]
@rosietherivetr
I emailed Owen yesterday, he said I would receive my decision by Tuesday. So I would just wait, however Someone from Delaware has heard. I saw it three days ago on here.
@fallenchemist I was actually intending to tell them this in the appealing letter after the fin aid result has come out in late March. So do you think I should send the lettet to appeal fin aid now and include this information or just a normal letter ??
@fallenchemist Just wondering, do a lot of deferred student typically end up getting accepted? Especially if they had the stats but maybe didn’t initially show a lot of interest? Because I am planning on emailing my admission counselor to indicate that Tulane is one of my top schools but I’m wondering if that will help or if I should still plan on being rejected…
Well, there is the technical answer and the answer to what I think you are actually asking in spirit.
The technical answer is most don’t get accepted because Tulane was right about them. By end of Feb or so they either got in already ED or EDII somewhere else or decided to wait for a school they prefer because they got into other “safeties”. These students won’t bother to show Tulane any more interest because it always was a “safety” to them, wrong as they turned out to be. Usually they applied to other schools that they also saw as back-ups (e.g. Miami, Pitt) and are already in there and so there was no reason to keep pursuing Tulane since their heart wasn’t in it.
The answer in spirit is for the rest, for those that Tulane perhaps misjudged (or was not provided enough evidence to the contrary) and they really want Tulane. Of course I have no stats, but sure I see a lot of these students get in every year. Please read Jeff’s blog again (or perhaps for the first time) and do exactly what he says. There is no secret advice or other observation on my part that supplements his points. http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/2011/12/ive-been-deferred-now-what.html
Your situation is pretty unique, so rather than hash it out here I will PM you tomorrow.
