ADMISSION DECISIONS FALL 2016 (CLASS OF 2020)

@hopefully16

I would still write. Any push in the right direction cannot hurt. At this stage, my instinct is for her to be very honest with the admissions person and lay out exactly where her mind is in the process, and the realities of “if this happens I can go to Tulane, otherwise it is State U”. But don’t oversell it in the sense of automatically saying the top amount. If $20,000 or $25,000 will do it, say that. Tulane will still give her what she would get anyway, I have seen that many times. It is hard to say what that is likely to be in her case because while that 34 is fantastic, I don’t know if that 3.65 is UW or includes all the AP., etc.

Thank you for the info. It is UW - her school doesn’t calculate gpa and we moved after freshmen year. She has 1 AP in junior year and 4 this year. I will have her contact them as soon as possible. Thanks.

who do I even email??

Welp, just got my financial aid package, which included $9k in loans for my first year and a net price about $3,000/year higher than my EFC.
Honestly not sure what the point of giving me a merit scholarship was since it didn’t make the school any more affordable.

Use the “find” section on the right.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but today my status changed from the deferral message back to “Your application is complete and is awaiting review.” Does this mean they are reviewing my application again?

@SnapApp

Frankly, I gave up trying to understand those interim messages a couple of years ago.

@usualhopeful , when and how did you get you Financial Aid? ie the Gibson Portal?, email/snail mail?? When?

@TXDad56 I got an email telling me to check Gibson; I initially got my acceptance on February 17th.

can your Gibson portal get updated at any time of the day or only during work hours?

@hart0122 - For admissions or financial aid? During the last couple weeks of the EA season, there were some very late-night acceptances, which I suspect will happen again in late March.

@usualhopeful admissions! I have yet to get a decision even though I applied EA and was deferred

@usualhopeful , how did you receive your financial aid package? On the portal, snail mail or email? When did you receive your FA package??

They will email your student and tell them the aid package is available to view.

My daughter was deferred EA and is waiting for a decision. If accepted, she would need financial aid so the above interests me. Isn’t $5,500 the limit for federal student loans for freshman year? Is the additional $3,500 a Parent PLUS loan?

@Mary13 The $5,500 loan limit is for Stafford loans ($3,500 max subsidized). The additional $4,500 (I managed to add wrong - I actually was given $10k in loans [even more fun!]) is a Perkins loan, which is subsidized but has an interest rate of 5% as opposed to this year’s 3.48% Stafford loan rate.

^ Thanks for your response, @usualhopeful. That sounds rather discouraging. Here’s hoping you end up at an affordable school that you love!

@Mary13 Thanks, that’s the hope. Good luck to your daughter!

Decision: ACCEPTED! (Deferred SCEA)
UW GPA: 3.95
SAT: 1960 (ew)
APs: Euro: 5, Latin: 5, Econ, English
Teacher Recs: Probably pretty good. 8 or 9/10s
Counselor Rec: Solid, I volunteered with him so I’m sure he said good things.

Extra Curriculars: tutoring, varsity basketball, part time job at a local business, volunteer coach, orientation organizer, Amnesty International club, and some more lol

I received my acceptance letter via snail mail on Friday 3/11. I hadn’t been checking my Gibson Portal because it made me super nervous and I hated trying to decipher all of the various messages but randomly I looked at it on Thursday and saw the congratulations message. Initially I was sad I was deferred, but I emailed my counselor (Jill) and said I was still very very interested in Tulane to do everything I could to increase my chances. Honestly, I think I got in because I have a solid GPA and I showed A LOT of INTEREST! It seems like interest is Tulane’s “thing”. I visited, wrote a thoughtful Why Tulane?, and as I said before, emailed my admissions counselor to demonstrate continued interest after I was deferred. If there is anyone on here who was deferred or even if you applied regular, I strongly recommend that you email your admissions person. My test scores and GPA didn’t change, so I think in the end my interest is what got me in!!!

Good luck to everyone still waiting, and I know it’s annoying to say this, but don’t worry about it.If Tulane doesn’t let you in, some other fabulous school will and you will go there and have a great four years and after that a great life. College admissions are rather random, and I would highly recommend Jeff Schiffman’s “I’ve been deferred” blogpost for inspiration/hope. He says it more eloquently than I am right now, but everything will work out in the end. The world has a funny way of operating that way. You are more than your SAT scores and GPA, and many of the most important qualities an individual can have can’t be seen on a college application. :slight_smile:

In other news, when do accepted students normally get the info/login stuff to register for NSOs and put down their deposit! I haven’t received anything directly from Tulane about that yet, and I’m pretty eager because I will most likely be in New Orleans this fall!!!

@sg2020 Did you receive any scholarship?
