General Comments : Sad:(

Well, my son committed to Tulane last night after carefully weighing all his options. His profile: 31 ACT, 2020 SAT, 3.4 unweighted GPA, 12 APs and attended one of the highest ranked/academic challenging public high schools in the country. The lesson we learned (as many people such as @fallenchemist have said) is that some colleges look at more than grades and test scores. We honestly believe what got him into Tulane was: (1) answering all the essays and mentioning Tulane/NOLA specific things in his responses, (2) visiting Tulane and attending a local (Florida) event and (3) communicating how much he wanted to attend and that it wasn’t his safety school. I’m sorry for those who wanted to go there and didn’t get in and wanted to thank many people (including @fallenchemist ) for all of your help and insight. Roll Wave!

@deacons12

So thrilled to have you son and his family as new members of our family!! I know how nice it is to have that decision done and behind you as a family.

Just remember we are always here to help.

Commiting to Tulane shortly

Very excited for Tulane!

Excited to have you, @Daukasg16 !!

Has anyone heard anything regarding how the waitlist is looking for this year? I was waitlisted from both Tulane and UChicago (my top two schools).

I think we won’t know anything firm for 5 more days, @welcometomylife

After stalking College Confidential, this forum in particular since August, I figured it’s about time to post something! I’m a current HS senior and Tulane was/is my #1 choice. I applied EA, was deferred, then was waitlisted RD. After shedding a few tears, I pulled myself together and tried to figure out where I went wrong. This was probably a waste of time, given that the college admissions process can’t really be figured out, but I needed something to do other than feel sorry for myself.
I come from a very small high school, ranked #2 in my state. It’s very competitive- we have a 100% graduation rate and we all go to top schools. 3 out of my 5 classes are APs, I have 100+ hours of volunteer work, 2 season varsity athlete, strong recommendations, 2020 SAT score (740CR, 620M, 660W), A- average, several internships and leadership positions, detailed & witty (if I do say so myself) “why tulane” essay. I’m guessing my major fault is my rough start to high school; I was sick for the first year and a half and my grades/social life/extra curriculars suffered (I wrote about this for my common app essay). Regardless, my college counselor told me not to worry about Tulane, our school has a great relationship with them, I was a more than likely admit, etc.
All of this is to say that I just don’t get it. I’ve been scanning others’ stories and it looks like I’m not the only one surprised by their decision. Maybe this is just the nature of the beast, that qualified people are turned away all the time. I can only imagine that, at a certain point, picking who to admit is like splitting hairs.
I’m still pretty sad about my outcome, especially because I’m well aware of how little Tulane’s waitlist has moved in the past couple of years. In the mean time I have enrolled at another school and mostly moved on (although my fingers are still secretly crossed). I’m not looking for an answer or anything here, of course, just wanted to put my story out there :slight_smile:
Best of luck to everyone in the next 4 years!

@JulianaKingsley You were wait listed because you are a qualified candidate for admission. You might be the perfect reason why Tulane is adding ED next year, a way for a highly qualified candidate to show that Tulane is indeed your first choice. Where are you headed next year? Good luck to you.

@DebmomNY Thank you. I’m headed to Occidental.

Best of luck at Occidental!

@fallenchemist Any idea what this incoming class looks like stat wise? How many PT/DHS kids did Tulane get? Not sure they publish the numbers anywhere but thought i’d ask.

They should be giving some information this week, now that the deadline has come and gone. But nothing is final until after move in at the end of August, because there are always a few that they think are coming that don’t show up. It is called “summer melt”, and most commonly it is one of two things Either a kid deposited at two schools from the start and never informed the school they didn’t pick, or they got in off a wait list at a school they wanted more and decided to take it, and never let Tulane know. There could be a few unusual cases of family emergencies, personal illness, or just plain old cold feet, but I think it is mostly just people not telling Tulane they are not coming.

As far as PT/DHS, they usually don’t say, but maybe we can get that information somewhere along the line.

Any updates regarding the Tulane waitlist?

Jeff will report on the new class Friday, he thinks. We can see if he mentions wait lists directly, or if he mentions the class size at this point (pre summer melt). The last is likely, and if it is large I would think we can surmise that there would be no wait list picks.

@welcometomylife

There was just a report on another thread that Tulane said in their message to a wait listed student that no one was being taken from the list this year. Just one report, but it seemed pretty plain.
