Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2024

So picking up on the Which visit is better conversation…we may be overkilling it but we are doing the Fisher COB Admitted Student visit on Feb 28th AND the Buckeye Bound visit on Feb 29th with the Fisher breakout session. We are traveling in from NJ so we might as well maximize the time even if it is a bit repetitive. Has anyone done/scheduled the same?

@smgins My guess is there will be some redundant information, but if your student likes lots of info then that might be a good thing. My son is good for about 3 hours and then would want to bail, so I have to choose carefully

@smgins. I have no info on those sessions, but hats off to your kid to hang in there for that much info. My son is good for about an hour.

If I may, since you have an evening, be sure to check out High street and drive a bit south to the short North district. There are other cool neighborhoods in Columbus, but you probably don’t want to drive around too much. We always loved our visits to OSU for our older son as there are so many great restaurants and markets. Enjoy!

Thank you!!! I had seen the first link, but not the second. My question was, if the pell grant and buckeye grant apply to us for tuition, then can we use any merit scholarships and federal loans toward room and board (instead of just canceling out some of the buckeye grant for tuition). I called student services, and they said we’ll indeed be able to apply merit and loans towards room and board. I also got your message about housing scholarships, thank you!!

@rbc2018 and @cypresspat thanks for the feedback. Luckily our daughter is like my wife and myself, we all can’t get enough information. We have visited the school and Columbus already and loved the campus, High Street and walked to High North (?). Loved Candado, excellent tacos and queso. We have her meeting with an undergrad we know as well. The last thing she needs to like is the Hillel. I’m hoping the new director is engaged and motivated to ensure a well rounded experience.

@smgins *Short North:)

OSU is great, so much opportunity and their trajectory over time will only improve. Am hoping the Kelley and Fisher days will make the decision easier…

@Smgins Hillel at OSU is PHENOMENAL. Everyone from the Rabbi to the new graduates running many of the programs is extremely nice and very engaging. They run lots of meaningful programs and everyone is welcome to participate.

@Boomer1964 Thanks for that info on Hillel at OSU. That is a question I get asked a lot by my son’s Jewish friends’ parents and I have never been able to help. Important info good to know. I am sure others will benefit as well.

@cypresspat D18 loves OSU and she is involved with many of the programs at Hillel and loves all the administrators. S20 has been accepted, but as of today, he has not received any scholarships in order to make OSU a viable OOS option. As the process drags longer, he is probably moving on altogether. Discouraging for sure, but not all it is lost.
He has some great options.

@boomer1965 will keep fingers crossed. I am in contact with one OOS OSU hopeful who has sky high stats and has not gotten his scholarship info yet…so I am sure there is more to come. That family moved out of state a few years ago but he has always wanted OSU. Making his parents a bit crazy that he wants the state flagship for where he used to live!

good evening, does anyone know what a typical rejection notice on buckeye link says? I got mine today and it said “We regret to inform you that you are not eligible for admission to the Columbus campus. Your application is being processed for your alternate choice campus”

Am not sure…that sounds like an in state notice, as they offer in state students a branch campus option such as Newark, Marion, etc.

@Boomer1964 thank you for the information on Hillel. OSU has everything my daughter could want academically and we all loved the campus and school spirit. The big open item is the Hillel. When we visited about 15 months ago, the former director was on her way out and was not very warm. Also, we went during the day when there weren’t any students around. With a young new director and a chance to participate in Shabbat services and dinner when we visit, I think we’ll have a very different and positive experience. At this point my daughter is focused on UMD (Smith school of Business) and Fisher, so I’m hoping she gets clarity during our visits! Smeal at Penn State and Broad at MSU are other options, but they don’t have the minor she wants. Does anyone have any thoughts on OSU Fisher vs. UMD Smith School of Business? Or Smeal too? Thank you!!

I know this isn’t the place to ask, but chance me…? I see some in here with similar stats to mines, but I see a mix of deferrals, acceptances, etc.
25 ACT (If super scored, I’d have a 25.5. Anyone know if they round it up or just keep it a 25…?)
3.96 W GPA/3.46 UW. (Below) Average EC’s (Track and Field, Theatre, Yearbook). OOS (NC). AA Female.

@Pelorider … Congratulations to you and your daughter. She has some wonderful choices. D18 was a Fisher Direct Admit and her experience has been very positive. It is all about Academics, Fit, and financials. All the schools you mentioned have excellent Business programs AND very active Hillels if this an important part of your financial decision. Keep in mind that these are all massive schools where the sky is the limit when it comes to academics and social. There are so many things that these kids can potentially get involved with that there is really no right or wrong when it comes to either OSU, UMD, or any of the other options. Sometimes it really comes down to Financials and that usually dictates the final decision.

I had applied in the early action wave. My application got missed so they assessed me this week. I got straight up rejected with a 29 ACT, 3.78 high school GPA, and a 4.0 GPA at the OSU academy program with 12 credit hours last semester. I am in the NHS, on varsity sports teams, I have been on many missions trip and have held many different leadership roles. I was the president of my 4H club and have shown animals in 4H for many years. I has have held a job work 15+ hours a week and got rejected, with no deferral. I am beyond disappointed with this school

@Chloereyno I’m so sorry to hear that. You sound like a great candidate. I know it stings now, but you will land in a good place and have continued success. There are many colleges where you can thrive, and one of them will be lucky to have you.

My

My daughter had the same issue and referral to a regional campus. The thing that gets me is that all of the other schools she applied to sent acceptances and (IMHO) large scholarship offers/low cost to attend. This was her #1, but it’s hard not to accept one of the other offers…Hang in there!
