Saw half of work of art w/ H last night. He said he will definitely not be watching the show. The previews for next week were CRAZY…everyone crying/sobbing…emoting. When S and I wer at Vassar the other day they had this big new building…the Center for Drama. We joked that all that goes on in that building is crying, complaining and interpersonal angst. That’s where they could film Work of Art. I loved that Mary Ellen Mark (guest judge) liked the Gandalf piece even when the other judges hated it. “He spoke to me. He’s calling out asking for attention” gmom…did you see the look the NY mag art critic gave her when she said that? Snobola.

TinTin movie? what? where? Ooh it better be good. Tin Tin is sacred to my boys. We have every one…almost all with broken spines, they were read so many times.

Talked to D in the morning for half hour and that makes me happy, I don’t think she miss me as last year (sad and happy about it). I did ask her are there fun projects to share with me, but the answer is “no”. I asked her to order her studio class from more fun to less and the order is:
Painting, Sculpture, Video, Drawing.
I want to share a fun conversation with her weeks ago, and it is about her Sculpture project, I was confused about it but also impressed of what she did:
The project require them to use their body to express what is human and she did a performance:
She kept throwing a button on the ground and search it on the ground by close her eye. And that is! She said she got a very good review! Can you imagine?!

This confused me since there is no technical about sculpture at all.

Her idea came from our tour of San Francisco in 2004. We visited Alcatraz. There was a dark penalty room there. When the prisoners got in trouble, they got to shut in that dark room. Most of them went crazy, since there is nothing they can do in the dark. There was one guy survived from this penalty by play the button game. He kept himself busy in the dark by search the button.

I am impressed she could remember the old time trip and use it now. She was only 12 years old at that time.

I did asked her: do you shared your old trip and she said no. She said they supposed to guess from their own perspective to do the critique.

Did your S or D have fun project to share? Do you feel Cooper is wield?! This is the word bears told me about Cooper long time ago, right, bears?

Tintin is a comic book hero, a boy detective and Snowy is his faithful doggy buddy.
They’d travel all over the world and to the moon and that.
He was in China for “The Blue Lotus”
[The Blue Lotus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](The Blue Lotus - Wikipedia)
Storyline was often questionable; first off, it’s old, 30s? 40s? colonialism, Euro supremacy (“Tintin in America” was a riot) but visuals are stunningly beeeautiful.
If anyone who don’t love Snowy should be ostracized.
so is captain Haddock.
so is Thomson and Thompson.
so is prof. Calculus.
basically, bad guys and that opera singer asides, you will fall in love with every character.

Thanks for info of Tintin!
In you early post, you said Olsen twins quit from nyu?
Last year D told me she did yoga with one of them but can not tell which one.

Gmom, my family can relate to that LOTR fanaticism. I perched by my computer and snagged the quickly sold out tickets to “trilogy Tuesday” at a big old theater in DC (the Uptown). They showed the first two movies, and then started the final one at 12:01 AM. How many hours sitting in the dark? H planned it and took a vacation day so he could go! Luckily the theater was very understanding and let everyone out between shows so they could get food. He loved it!

Checking in and trying to catch up on all the chatter. Had a impacted, diseased wisdom tooth removed yesterday. Was surprised when the dentist took x-rays and said, well, you’re gonna make me think hard today. I knew that couldn’t be good, so he showed me the xray with a nasty grainy looking tooth instead of a white one all impacted under the gum, causing trouble to the one next to it, and sent me to the oral surgeon, who said I must have a high pain tolerance, he couldn’t believe it didn’t hurt. So he took it out yesterday in about 1/2 hour, haveing to scoop out pieces because it was cracked and falling apart. The guy is great - he did my D’s mouth surgery when she was getting her braces. He put a chain around one tooth that wouldn’t come down all the way, grafted tissue from her palate to build up her gum and cut her plenum (not sure if that’s the word - its the skin that holds your tongue to the floor of your mouth) so it wasn’t so restricted. Gave me antibiotics and to my surprise, oxycodones. I only had to take one oxy, so now I have 19 left and don’t need them. Everyone was joking about what the street value was!

We have a number of artists in the family, but no blood relations, only by marriage. The most famous was D’s uncle who designed at least one version of the Morton Salt Girl. Her blood aunt fancies herself a painter but the pics she does only come out when she visits. She did one of our dog, and the eyes were so bad we gave it to an artist friend of ours to fix, who did the best she could I guess. I don’t think that painter is particularly good with animals either, so it is now relegated to the garage. I have no idea where D gets her talent.

No interesting people in our past, altho I do have a relative that fought in the American Revolution. And the town of Kernersville, NC was founded by a great great uncle. Other than that, we’re pretty boring. The big scandal was that a Scottish woman married an Irish man who became some great aunt and uncle. Apparently that just wasn’t done back then. Pretty boring all told.

wikipedia says enrolled in 2004 left by 2005.
could that make classmate of lady Gaga before she was Gaga?
I thought one of the twin went somewhere else, not NYU.

I did see Ashley in Soho Dean&Deluca once, store person said it is Ashley and she can tell for sure.
whichever she was why would she want to come into the tourist trap specialty food store during it’s busiest hours while looking like haven’t eaten solid food since Fullhouse gigs was beside the point.
tiny frame, puffy lips and HUGE eyes. somewhat looked like fake human-person made out of Super sculpey or latex and planted plastic golden hair on it strand by strand, so it curls just so.
I guess you have to be tiny to be look about OK on the camera. every actors I saw real thing around here were tiny. feathery tiny.

there is a cafe where you’d come out of subways to Grand central terminal, on the counter are apothecary jars that biscotties are neatly lined up standing inside.
one day when we were together, my kid pointed out the jar and said
“it’s a trick, when you see it from outside, cookies looks so much bigger than the real thing! wanna see it?”
apparently he was “tricked” once, and I had to buy one of pistachio kind so the storekeeper could take it out of the jar.
He was right, with naked eyes, the biscotti was 85% sh shorter and skinnier.
TV camera might work the same way. only that people won’t like fatter bigger actress.

ouch
redbug, I was wondering where you been.
I remember certain dentist in South Boston everyone adored because he was young and cute and chat nicely with twice his aged women.
It was a nightmare. I pulled another wisdom tooth at somewhere else and it was a great success, the kind doctor would want to pump arm sort.
Then this cute young guy just could not pull it off (literally) I heard cursing (f***) beads of sweat, increasingly noisy maneuver.
In the end, it all came out in pieces and somehow my mouth did not open more than half inch for 3-4 days. drugged out numb.
They know better, yes? how to drug us? That was the last time I ever needed anything bad.
phew.

I thought a local anestetic meant you were out completely, but I still could still hear talking (altho very soft) and I knew someone was moving my jaw. But I didn’t feel any pain at all. Went to work the next day and felt better that day than I do now. Can’t open my jaw all the way plus a sore throat. But it’s over anyway.

Launch related, D is having much better roommate situation this year with the exception of her quarters for laundry disappearing. They think it was roommates boyfriend who was visiting. D has now started to put her quarters somewhere else other than a jar on her desk in plain sight!

where is everyone?
how’s home field homecoming, fammom?
poodle, swits?
fleas, G?
Fall break, mom4?
colcon, phillymom, Gmom Halooooo!?

I can’t just bump it can I?
so
It was this thread about underage college freshman drinking and friend’s mom encouraging her S to party, turned into genealogy debate of famed “red cups” and my Costco discovery/proof; I have been doing in parents forum, I heard that my kid’s roommate (same age-sh) bought big cardboard box of wine (he claimed 6 bottles in one, really?)
He reported he tasted tablespoonful and liked it.
his roomie must have plan to consume it eventually, all of it, with or without him.
Somewhat I do not worry, while worry about little this and that about him.
here NY, 21 is the age. then about every HS kids would have been there done that (esp. at those hi pressure schools with hi pressure parents who often away weekends to relieve their own pressure)
They know better. shouldn’t everyone? hemhemehemhem.
Or is this again, regional thing, like I am finding about more and more these days how I did not know people other part of the country think/ live/ raise their kids?

Hi everyone!
bears, it’s nice to be missed! Thanks for the shout out! I was away visiting my sister and her family. I wanted to see my nephew’s football game on Saturday morning (raining buckets for 2 1/2 hours) and then his older brother’s field band competition at night (another 2 1/2 hours of pouring rain). I should score some great aunt points, right?! They’re both in HS, nice boys, and I really enjoyed the chance to watch them in action!

OK, catching up:
bears, I will never look at biscotti the same way again! 85% smaller? Yikes, what a ripoff!

loveblue, wonderful story about your daughter’s performance art and how she remembered the button story. That is so interesting!

redbug, hope the tooth troubles are behind you. I need to go to the dds as I can see some trouble coming down the pike, but with no dental insurance I keep putting it off. I know that’s dumb but there always seems to be something else to pay for.

Gmom, I never heard of that show, Work of Art! I don’t have cable tv and only see the Bravo shows when I visit the kids, LOL! You’ll have to keep us updated on how your LOTR guy is doing. It’s a reality show competition, like the fashion or cooking shows?

How are all the kiddos doing? My D has mid-terms this week. She has all studio courses this semester and she doesn’t seem stressed at all; has some portfolio presentations to prepare but no tests this round (she took some of her liberal arts classes while in HS which gave her a break this semester). I will visit her soon for Family Weekend and can’t wait to see what she’s been up to! Loveblue asked about interesting projects the kids may have. D has talked about her illustration media class meeting at the bay to paint, and now they’re doing presidential portraits using a cool new technique. In another class she’s working on a poster for the upcoming opera season in town; apparently there is a competition with several colleges participating. She’s having fun with that as she is not a competitive person and is just doing what she loves for a design. Halloween is coming up and the college hosts the area children so she’s excited to participate in that; will wear a costume she made last year as part of a Fine Arts piece!

I’ll go…
Visited S on Saturday for Parent’s Weekend at RISD. Figured out that I don’t have to pay the fee ($25 per parent!!!) to have fun. Just went to the used book sale…Yeah!! $1 art books decommissioned from the library and the alumni student street fair. Good for scouting out ideas. The best things for sale were from the current students…the most home made and individual, risk taking. Good smelling soaps cut into crystal shapes, jewelry made from machine parts, felted pods around rocks to make necklaces. S decided he wants to come up with something to sell next year. He is in ID foundations and he gave us a tour of the building and his work in each class. Wood…he has learned joinery and how to plane a block of wood into a combo of curves and flat planes. Next will be a deconstructed/constructed box. Metal, basic shaping and cutting of sheet metal and fancy hinging to make moving parts. Design Principles…tons and tons of 3 dimension sketching, multi views of natural objects (orthographic?) his was a crawfish. Same for invented object. He drew 5 different concepts for spatulas each with a different personality. Juvenile, practical, elegant etc. His next project is to recreate a hand tool or hand held object in foam core. So off to Salvation Army we went. Providence has a huge, pretty fantastic SA. We hunted for a long time and found an old 110 camera from the 70’s that was a gem.

His apartment was very homey. His roommate is into textiles so there were wall hangings rugs and pillows all around and some paintings in progress. S made coffee for us while we lounged about and he commented on how the tables had turned. Took him sneaker shopping since he will play basketball on the team again…RISD Balls, get it? You don’t want to see their posters. Too lewd. And midnight soccer. He is giving tours and working in media services, I am a little worried he is taking on to much.
We left for home very late and very tired on Saturday night. H and I took turns blubbering and crying and blowing our noses into our shirts during the ride. This is no fair. The time when all of the parenting hours pay off and your kid is becoming their own person and we only get to have glimpses. Oh my heart.

<<< drae wrote: This is no fair. The time when all of the parenting hours pay off and your kid is becoming their own person and we only get to have glimpses. Oh my heart.>>>

Drae, what a great visit report! The above made me laugh since it is so true! What always got me is that until the day they leave you give 'em a kiss every night and then BAM! they’re just gone for months on end. It is neat seeing the changes and hearing about their new adventures, and like you said, enjoying a little role reversal when you are on his turf! What fun to see all his work and get a feeling for what he can accomplish already. Sounds like you had a nice visit and before you know it he’ll be home for the holidays!

Bears the poodle is my superfabulous woofy boyfriend and his haircut only makes it more so. He is the dog formerly known as Prince.

Regarding my kid, oh my heart too!! I was just today thinking that I have finally started thinking about him as this really interesting guy I know who I might hear from once in a while. The poodle is a safer bet. He can’t even stand for me to close the bathroom door. That’s the thing about give away dogs, they are so appreciative. I am his sun and moon. On his planet they worship me like a goddess.

If you put your poodle and a family member (you pick, husband, wife, college attending child) in the trunk of a car and leave it locked for an hour who will be really happy to see you when you open it?

Just heard this the other day, I thought it summed up the relationship I have with my family and my dog perfectly. And the thing is, it’s soooooooooo true.

Arty my whole family is glad I have someone(s) to focus the laser attention of my love on. My h is very independent. I guess baby switters is too, now that he has been given a chance.

Hmm…tintin and olsen twins mixed in with dental procedures, poodles, and missing launchees and that is in just the last two pages of our “after the launch”…well, no dental horror stories here…just homecoming which was very similarto a bad filling…lots of noise, anxiety, sensitivity to cold/pain, and the potential that something relatively simple will turn into a nightmare of a root canal or worse …all of which cost a really hefty $$$$ with little to show for it. Homecoming in a nutshell!

So D is worked up to a frenzy by the Friday night game–nervous about dance, timing, rides, and, particularly, the new heels that will probably become uncomfortable before the dance ends. OK. They lose the game and D wore flipflops to stadium–cold feet and gets stepped on so feet already sensitive since they already are blistered from wet cleats playing fh. Not a great night and rumour finds me that one of her friends (supposedly not with her at the game) is arrested for being drunk?! Very sweet military kid with very protective mother…youngest of 4…Dad always in iraq or afghanistan. Not clear what happened with that but my radar is now on full blast because alcohol is clearly already making the rounds this weekend…so she goes with friend to get hairdo. I give them little speech about being careful/responsible…eye rolling ensues. Girls go to another house to get ready…the inevitable phone call to me in a panic…"oye Mam
