Amazon Prime Planning Major "Black Friday" Event, July 15

Next Wednesday!

Looks like only prime members can participate but they will be offering a 30 day trial membership so that “everyone” can participate - clearly a move to increase # of prime members, but sounds like also planning oodles of great deals.

Will you be checking it out next Wednesday???

Also occurs to me that this 30 day trial period - July 15 - August 15 is a great time to take advantage of ordering new freshman supplies or refresher supplies for upperclassmen…

I will be. Great timing for us as we’re adding things to our new house.

@abasket Actually, Amazon Prime is free for 6 months for college students.

If there is Cat litter and cat foods… I’m in!

I haven’t seen the “free for 6 months” deal …

The promotion CaliCash is talking applies to those with a .edu email address. Incoming and current students can try prime for a 6 month trial period, if they want to sign up through their school account. For everyone else, the trial period is 30 days. These are two separate promotions.

I just might sign up for Prime Day depending on what’s for sale. I would love some thing for the apartment.

^^^ Yes, I realize that - just haven’t seen the 6 month offer recently! But have a new freshman so will have her look out for it!

I know my son got it free for 6 months and then thereafter his AP is 1/2 of the normal rate as long as he is a student. I cancelled mine when the rates went up and am using his now, as you can attach different addresses to the account. Thanks for the heads up on this @abasket!

If you’re going to cancel, my experience is they don’t give you a heads up when the renewal hits. So be aware. I do like Prime for the shipping and instant movies.

What I can’t figure out is whether anything I want will be discounted.

I want them to let us know what will be on sale.

My strategy: because I already bought all the crap we need, I will quickly do a search for my cats’ favorite cat litter. If it is not on sale, I’m done.

My kid needs a bunch of electronic stuff for school so that might actually be on sale. I will try hard to hold out for it.

Abasket, I posted this on facebook yesterday, but still not sure how it works. Is it like their existing " lightening deals" random things on deep discounts for limited time.
Will the items be promoted ahead of time? The site isn’t clear, to someone, like me, unfamiliar with lightening deals.

I can’t imagine even Amazon has enough servers to have a 24 hour “global sale” to rival Black Friday. Especially if you are supposed to “hang out” to see deals as they pop up.

My understanding… There is a list of “deals” that pops up every hour or so and the deals remains open until either the time runs out or every item in the deal gets snatched. Christmas in July, indeed.

Seriously, August 15 is the last day?! Ugh, I guess I won’t buy anything off of Amazon for college. They should extend it to August 25 or something so us incoming freshman can get in on the sale.

@stugrace - Take advantage of the free 6 month Amazon Prime offered for students as others have mentioned above.

Having a major ‘Black Friday’ promotion on a Wednesday?

“But of course, that’s not what Amazon wants them to do. Aside from celebrating its birthday through its popular membership service, I think there’s something else going on with Prime Day, and it has to do with Amazon’s upcoming competitor, Jet.com.”
