American Idol 2015 Thread!

Well, did JLo not tell “this is yours to lose” to … Jax?

The comments, safe and except 10 percent of what Harry says, are simply time fillers. Just as the comments of TV judges, they rarely make any sense at all. Those shows are meant to be mass-entertainment with a singing contest as an appendix. The entertainment might be vapid but it keeps the broad public away from their daily concerns.

I happen to think that the dives into sexist or innuendo laden comments are just part of the production. They do not pick judges for their intellect – although Harry seems to be a lot smarter than the rest.

My vcr neglected to tape AI this week so I can’t comment on the show.

I totally agree with ziggi. I watched The Voice, Joshua is local to my area. The judges on that show didn’t seem anymore constructive that AI.

deb922, I think the judging dynamic is much different on the Voice versus AI. Since each on the Voice is really a coach with a team of their own, they feel more obligated to make mostly positive comments about their own team and not be negative towards the other coaches and their respective teams, for fear of retaliation. Personally, I think this is the Achilles heal of the Voice. Most, if not all, of the comments end up getting sugar coated and ARE similar to the sugary comments on AI. I think the objective on AI is to not sway the votes, to lobby for their favorites, or to level the playing field. Whatever the reason, agreeing with you and xiggi, it makes for meaningless viewing.

I missed Nick this week, but, yeah, it seems like he should be better than he his. I want him to hang around. After Clark, Nick and Tyanna it’s all the same to me. Jax is still a little interesting, I guess.

Oops… should have been Achilles HEEL in post #222.

Anybody watch tonight?

I’m watching now, less than impressed. Tyanna was okay. Clark often sounded off key, but of course they went overboard complementing him. Jax is so affected and annoying, I wish for Simon to come back and slap her silly. Why am I watching this?

Each singer performed 2 songs:

Nick was solid in round 1, faltered in round 2, In agreement with Harry.

Didn’t like Quentin in either round. Just cannot get past his pitch problems. Harry mentions it every week but I don’t think he has the ability to correct this anytime soon or he would have already.

I thought Jax was terrible in round 1 and 2. Judges liked her. To me, she seemed like she was doing a parody of a rocker.

Joey was just so-so in round 1. Needs to get back to her quirky self and play an instrument! Liked her much better in round 2, but think Rayvon should get the fan save (again).

I liked Rayvon in both rounds. He didn’t unleash his falsetto as much, which was a plus.

I thought Clark had his worst performance of the season when he chose to sing Moon River in round 2. Nothing special, whatsoever.

Tyanna gave 2 solid performances. She was the most consistent. I still do not like her as much as I did early in the season, but she definitely has gotten back in the race in the last 2 weeks.

I am ready for both Quentin and Jax to go…

Joey sounded awful in round one, and pretty bad in the second. Enjoyed Rayvon in both rounds, really good. What a classy guy. That breakdown Quentin had was a little weird, it might land him in the bottom two. Jax was TERRIBLE in the second round, ugh.

Interesting when Harry said that Clark was the only musician left in the contest. The camera went to Nick, who had a big smile, and obviously heard it. Um, isn’t he a musician?

NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE QUENTIN OUTBURST!??

That was totally awkward. To me, it felt VERY intentional towards either Rayvon or another contestant he thought should be in the bottom. It’s a competition so someone has to go! I get it that he is young, not used to the limelight and all that business but that was really not ok! I was doing some reading this morning and many people are knocking Harry for calling Quentin out - I say Harry put on his Dad hat (as did JLo - Mom hat - after Quentin’s 2nd performance) and that Harry just felt it was a really ungrateful dig at AI. I really like Quentin, I really like Harry - but that was totally awkward and the rest of the show was just WEIRD!

Too bad for Joey - she seems like a sweet, sweet girl. Re: her appearance tonight - she looked so much more attractive to me without the totally weird hair - I actually noticed her face!!!

Rayvon is like a cat! Many lives! He too seems like a nice guy. Really all of them.

I also thought Jax was awful - especially on Beat It - just awful! She is very gimmicky.

I would also agree that while he was good, Clark was not 100%. I did like the start to his first song alot. Both of his songs seemed VERY short.

Nick. Guys, I want to love his voice. I JUST DON"T GET IT! He is a sweet guy, Scott seems to really favor him, but he just doesn’t sound good to me! So one note! What am I not hearing?!

Quentin’s performances - Sounds of Silence - very effective - great PERFORMANCE - voice does lack real singer quality. Love the guy, but didn’t love his agenda tonight.

Weird, weird show tonight.

abasket, I think you may have meant to say “he thought should NOT be in the bottom”. I thought that Quentin was upset that his good buddy Rayvon WAS in the bottom. It might have been festering for a couple of weeks and “boiled over” last night. Or not. May have been gamesmanship on his part, that backfired. He seemed sincere to me but totally awkward and misguided, agreed.

The show is missing Jimmy Iovine as much as Simon Cowell.

I am wondering if Quentin’s outburst was planned to add some drama. This is a live show, and taking (a lot) of time out for that exchange did not seem to affect the pace or timing of the show. They seemed to have time to kill at the end. Very strange to me.

No actually, at first I thought the diss was intended for Rayvon because Quentin is so close to Joey. That’s the way it came off to me at first. But apparently he said, “those two” in the bottom two - which made me thing - did he think someone else should be in the bottom two??

Here’s some more info from after the show:
It was the verbal barb that felt like a physical slap in American Idol judge Harry Connick Jr.'s face. Following a reveal of the bottom two on the show Wednesday night, season 14 finalist Quentin Alexander – safe for now – told host Ryan Seacrest, “This whole thing is wack” and characterized the moment simply as, “this sucks.”

His comments did not go over well with the judges, Harry Connick Jr. in particular was incensed as what he perceived to be disrespectful. “If it’s that wack, you can always go home,” the judge chastised. “Idol is paying a lot of money to give you this experience, and for you to say that to the hand that is feeding you right now… is highly disrespectful.”

Alexander later apologized and explained himself on-air, a campaign that continued backstage where he told Billboard:

“I want to clarify: I wasn’t disrespectful with anyone. It was me being honest with the moment and honest with myself and honest with everyone else. I love Harry Connick Jr. I would never disrespect this man that gave me this opportunity. It was just a conversation that was aired on TV. No negativity, no hard feelings. We shook hands [afterwards] and I hope that he is not feeling any bad things. My intention was not to disrespect him. We all know that I have those eyes. And everything goes through my eyes. And it looked like I was going to go punch him, but I would never do that. I respect him too much.”

Still, the 20-year-old Louisiana native stopped short of taking it back. “If I could re-do the night, I wouldn’t do anything differently,” said Alexander. “I wouldn’t change anything about my performances, I wouldn’t change that moment with Harry because ultimately, it is the real. It’s a reality television show. The truth is it was real emotions – real feelings, real relationships… That was a real moment for myself as well as the world. For me, it felt like my family was being ripped apart. It hurt. So for me to go back and change and put on a façade and paint on a smile, that would be disrespectful to myself and to America [because I would be] lying.”

‘American Idol’: Watch Harry Connick Jr., Quentin Alexander Clash Over ‘This is Wack’ Comment

What did his fellow finalists and mentor Scott Borchetta have to say? Read on…

Scott Borchetta: “I was loving every minute of it. That’s what live television and rock and roll is all about. There is no reason that the world should be so PC and so boring. Quentin was obviously very moved and felt very strongly. And he vocalized his emotions and that is what a great artist does.”

Nick Fradiani: “It was an emotional little outburst. I don’t think he meant it in a punky way. It was not him completely. Quentin’s my roommate, I love the kid – he’s real soft-spoken and kind. He is also very emotional. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He and Joey [Cook] bonded and became very close friends, so he was upset seeing her potentially going home and I think he was also very excited about his song and didn’t agree with some of the judges comments. He had a moment and the only difference her is every little thing is nitpicked and voted on. But it definitely made for good TV.”

Tyanna Jones: “I was 100 percent confused…I completely understand where Quentin was coming from. Seeing someone leave really does suck. It hit him really hard. I think it was very reasonable and amazing of him to go back and apologize.”

Clark Beckham: “That was quite a dramatic moment. We are family. Our family isn’t here. We don’t have friends here. We have each other. That’s all we have. These are the people we have been with for four or five months. So when they leave us this is going to bring out real, dramatic, raw emotion. It is very hard to see people go.”

Rayvon Owen: “To get up in front of the judges and all these people, that’s huge… It shows you how close we are and how much we do believe in each other. It’s not fake. That shows you how real it is. It’s sad to see one person leave each week.”

I think the outburst wasn’t a problem. You have a contestant who loves the drama and a diva judge who took it the chin for no real reason. The judges are not sending anyone home or voting. It is the audience that does. And, to his credit, the show has been … wack. If the judges took it personally, they might rethink how their strange comments might have influenced the voters. Quaasim anyone?

Quentin is raw and, at times, a mesmerizing figure. He is not a favorite but he has been eminently entertaining. Well, we might all have to settle for some more glee-type performances. Some seem to appreciate that kind of stuff.

PS I no longer watch the show when aired. I simply watch the videos and FF to most of them. This show remains utterly pathetic. Production, format, judges, contestants … name it. The women are still abysmal and the men barely better. I mostly have paid attention to see what Quentin brings up that week.

If I were Tyanna’s producer, I would try to keep her in the Janelle Monae mode. Even though that’s already been done (by Janelle), it’s not a very crowded field. Tyanna could put her own twist on it. She dressed like Janelle, wearing the “menswear” look early-on and I really loved it. I’ve never watched a full episode of Glee but, if xiggi watches, maybe I should start!

Actually, if any of these singers sounded as good as they do on Glee, they’d be running away with it. The Glee singers are lip syncing, auto tuned, and never off key, impossibly perfect.

JS. watching Glee more than a few minutes would be akin to prepare for Seppuku. It happens that I have to relinquish the large TV to my younger sister every once in a while. She puts up with me when I tune in to endless recordings of the Tour de France or the Flemish Classics. After a few minutes of Glee, I find a reason to visit the local La Boulange and bring back croissants. It’s not the show per se, but the genre that makes me cringe. I have simple tastes!

Eating a chocolate or almond croissant could make anything tolerable

Abasket is right … The Quentin outburst was strange and awkward, and then Harry only added to the awkwardness of those minutes.

Quentin’s second song was better, but he does need some heavy duty ear training. Clark was my favorite, but it also seems like he has big music connections that influenced his life, so now I expect more from him. Jax was better this week. I wouldn’t mind if Rayvon and Quentin went home.

I like Rayvon better than Jax. Her ‘Beat It’ was awful. Rayvon has a beautiful voice. I think one of his problems has been song choice, but he also doesn’t seem to have much of a fan base. Quentin should be next to go. Seems like AI has gone with the unique performers this year instead of the ones who can actually sing. Not sure that has been successful for them.
