I’m also OK with the results.
Cade does not seem interested in Katy’s antics. I’m sure he would appreciate some constructive criticism instead of the embarrassing swooning.
I’m sad that Catie didn’t go through, although I expected it when she forgot half a verse. By now, my three favorites (Ada, Catie, and Jurnee) have been eliminated.
I thought most of the performances were pretty good. My favorites were Nothing Compares, Manic Monday, and Back at One. I didn’t click with Michael’s version of Celine.
Also, I wish Gabby would sing less nasally/throaty - she sings some phrases like that, and has some YouTube videos with it. She’s an amazing singer and I’m rooting for her now, but I would love if she would show her other stylistic talents.
I thought Catie, Michael, and Jurnee were the bottom three tonight, but I thought Michael would go instead of Jurnee.
I do not get the Cade appeal! I love Maddie and Caleb. I was very surprised Micheal made it over either of the two girls eliminated.
@CharlotteLetter I totally agree about the nasal sound of Gabby. She is trying to hard, it doesn’t sound natural- otherwise, she is very talented!
Saw the performances and heard the judges’ comments on YouTube, but have not watched the show or the coaching sessions on Hulu yet.
Gabby and her nasally verses/performances has bugged me from day 1. She has a great range and, to her defense, most female Country singers sound nasally to me. That’s what made me such a fan of Lauren Duski on The Voice a few seasons back. Nevertheless, Gabby had a really solid night overall. I Hope You Dance, her song #1, was her personal best performance of the season, imo.
For me, Michael is really fun to watch. So likeable.
Forgetting the fact Catie forgot the lyrics and possibly had earpiece issues, I thought she was just awful tonight. Yikes… those song choices. She was so much better when we saw her more serious side last week.
I did not like either of Jurnee’s song choices, especially the Brian McKnight song #2. Her voice gave me chills during Hollywood Week but she never seemed to gain much momentum after that.
I loved Caleb’s song #2, When Doves Cry. His personal best performance of the season, imo— by a mile!
Cade had his worst performance of the season with the Jewel song #1, with a really shaky start, but recovered nicely with song #2, Jungle Love.
The night belonged to Maddie Poppe. She was the most consistent top-7 performer, imo.
I hadn’t been a Caleb fan, but have to give him kudos for his terrific rendition of When Doves Fly. Put his own country spin on it and it was really, really good. Agree that Maddie had 2 great performances and was best overall
All in all, I think the judges didn’t do nearly as good of a job as past season in picking the top 14. Seems like they went after filling boxes, or picking singers who had some sort of modern story, versus just sticking with the singing!
wisteria, I was definitely not a Caleb fan before he closed the show with his rendition of When Doves Cry (and also fly). He nailed it.
I think it’s an interesting top-5. I am still hoping that either “no Voice chair turn” Maddie or Cade is the next American Idol.
@jshain, curious, what you like about Cade?
Oscar, mostly his awesome guitar work and the fact that he’s a rocker.
If I were hypothetically an “investor”, the one who I think has the best chance of success after the show, and that I would want to be business partners with, would be Gabby.
I gotcha!
I was happy to hear that the top 7 are all going to “tour” (I assume that means $ for them). Disappointed to see Catie go, I wish they would have encouraged her original material. I’m sorry but I simply cannot bear Gabby and that overly affected style she sings in. It hurts my ears. I’m thinking that Caleb may be on his way to a win.
For the most part I’ve enjoyed the season. Did anyone else catch that they got picked up for a second season?
I had seen the season renewal a couple weeks ago - I have to say, I’m surprised.
I’m interested in reading your comments but that is about it! I stopped watching at Disney week. And hearing that two country singers seem to be quite popular that is another strike for me NOT to watch. (sorry to country fans!)
I think more than ever the show is not about America voting and more about the producers putting out a project that makes America THINK they are voting, THINK they are turning out an Idol - when in fact it is kind of skewed along the way…I mean, it always has been to a degree, but even more so now. I’ve read lots of complaints that the judges aren’t really judging - or giving constructive criticism much at all.
@JustaMom I agree with you! I too think Caleb is on his way. I hope its Maddie or Caleb-they are so naturally talented and humble, which I find very appealing.
@abasket I agree with you on the voting- seems fixed. Country music has grown on me since moving to an area where it is endemic!
Considering the financial impact associated with being on American Idol, it would seem the producers would be exposing themselves to huge lawsuits if they rigged the voting.
“Rigged” would not the right word for what I’m thinking of …more “structuring the process” to their benefit - like, saying America votes but still having the judges pick a good portion of the top 12 or whatever it was. “Live” voting - probably a disadvantage to those singing later - people wimp out on voting by the end of the show - are more eager at the beginning of a show…stuff like that.
Agreed Nrdsb4. Voting NOT rigged. But the judges definitely SWAY the votes in more ways than just with their comments. For example, who they stand up for during and after each performance. Jurnee got no love in that regard during both of her performances. On the other hand, with Michael they stood for what seemed to be the entire time during his more upbeat performance.
I can definitely believe that the judges’ behavior could influence voters. Good point about placement in show in terms of performing later.
^^^ Especially with this live voting thing. Is the voting for how long after the show ends? Either way, with live voting I think you are at a disadvantage singing later. Even watching a show I’m much more enthusiastic watcher early on - after 90 minutes I’m distracted!
