American Idol 2018 and Beyond

That would be an awesome song choice! I would like to see Cade playing a keyboard occasionally, in addition to his guitar every week as well. He plays keys on YouTube, singing Hallelujah.

I agree about Cade losing the guitar. I don’t want him to get too pigeon-holed. The dream catcher annoys me.

OK … SPOILER ALERT. Stop now if you don’t want to know eliminations.

I was traveling last night so didn’t get to see all the duets. Count me as pleased that they let Layla go (much to my mother’s dismay). A little Jennifer Nettles goes a long way in my book, and to pair her with a more petite, peppier, perkier version was just tooooo much sugar by half for me. On the other hand, I think Gabby SLAYED. How old is she? Just did the duet thing beautifully, totally holding her own.

I hated to see Brandon go, but he just didn’t rise to the occasion so I don’t blame them. Same with Kay Kay.

I watched part of Jonny’s duet this morning. Not impressed, but I’m glad that they kept him around.

No feelings at all about Trevor so I guess that’s why he’s gone. Same with Dominique.

Michelle Sussett. Fine. I’m stuck with her. Her duet was at least interesting, though maybe it was Luis Fonsi who was holding my attention. :x I guess I’m stuck with Katie, too, but I think her voice is better than Michelle’s.

Loved Dennis, and there’s something about Michael. I keep wanting to see him succeed.

I’m ready for Cade to ditch the dream catcher as well.

I may be sounding like a broken record but I think the judges screwed up royally when they opted for Trevor (and probably Garrett also, we will see next week) instead of Laine. I really like Michael J. Goddard also. What a personality. He and Pat Monahan were hysterical during their rehearsals. This kid is funny AND he can sing. Glad he made the cut. Loved Jonny in his original audition but haven’t really loved him since. Loved Gabby. Singing with more control every week.

Here was the order that group 1 was chosen. Was it a ranking order based on duet performance or am I reading too much into it?

  1. Cade
  2. Michelle
  3. Dennis
  4. Gabby
  5. Jonny
  6. Michael
  7. Catie

Another vote for ditching the dream catcher. I really like Cade, though. Gabby was outstanding and it’s tough to hold your own with Jennifer Nettles. Can’t wait for next week.

I am really looking forward to watching my 2 top-ranked females, Jurnee Siani and Maddie “no chair turns on the Voice” Poppe, perform their solos and duets. Perhaps my biggest anticipated performances will be from Ada Vox, who I think is an incredible vocalist. I also really like Mara Justine, AGT’s Top-12 semifinalist in 2014 when she was just 11-years-old, and Alyssa Raghu. For me, next week is an especially strong group of female vocalists and, unfortunately, not all of them will be getting to the Live Shows.

See you Sunday!

I haven’t watched yet and don’t know when I will so have decided to cheat and read anyway.

By the way, I think it’s fair to post spoilers after the show has aired on the west coast - and/or at least use all caps for SPOILERS and then leave a space or two before writing text. Most people know to not check a reality show thread if you don’t want to know what happened!

For those new to Idol Season 16 or just tuning in: Adam Sanders is a male contestant in the top-24. His drag queen persona goes by the name Ada Vox. Some of you might remember him on American Idol a few years back, during Season 12, when he competed as Adam Sanders and was a top-50 contestant. Up unil now, he has only performed as Ada Vox. I guess we will have to wait and see if he makes the cut and performs as Adam ever again.

I am really glad Allen Stone has returned to do a duet again with Marcio. I am looking forward to that duet and many others. Love the Colbie Caillat and Lea Michele pairings. Should be a great group 2 showing!

I love Dancing on My Own. Ds2 sang it with his a cappella group. Unfortunately, I couldn’t pick Ron out of a lineup! lol

Also love Meant to Be. Hope he doesn’t butcher it.

Alyssa should be good on that Rihanna song.

Ugh, just realized that Sunday it’s competing against the ACMs. I’ll be flipping.

Youdon’tsay, Ron Bultongez had one of the more interesting auditions and backstories. He’s the kid from the Congo that got called back in during the auditions after Lionel Richie changed his no vote to a yes. He also became the legal guardian of his 2 younger brothers. I believe he also has a child of his own. Although I’m really pulling for him, this might be the end of the road for him. I like Caleb a lot. For me, it will not matter if he butchers the song (but he won’t). I will just concentrate on Bebe. He’s almost a lock to move on. I think Alyssa could be on the bubble. I personally wish she had waited another year or two before auditioning.

Oh, I remember him now. I think he will sing the slow version and do well, though he’s never been my fave.

I agree about Alyssa. A year or two would have helped her.

I don’t really know many of the names yet. The super annoying girl (Katie?) needs to knock it off. She’s so over the top that it appears really fake to me. That might work to grab people’s attention at first, but it’s starting to get very grating. But when she opens her mouth, she can really sing.

I have no understanding why the one black guy who was phenomenal (he ended up wearing a hat) went home, and the other black guy who worked at Chuckie Cheese’s stayed. He was very mediocre, though he did a good job at a show tune.

Jurnee is really good, though it seems very weird to be married at 18. Makes me wonder if it’s for real, or something she did to make herself different. I’m not too trusting of these real life stories any more. I like Maddie a lot, I think she’s very special. And Ada…though I’m not usually much of a fan of the cross dressing stuff, but wow! I wonder what the fans will think when he performs as himself? He is so phenomenally good.

busdriver, If you are curious about any of these artists or simply want a refresher, you can enter their name on your computer, followed by “YouTube” and watch at least their audition and Hollywood Week Solos.

Thanks, jshain. I think that’s the show I just watched, the Hollywood solos. But since I haven’t been watching along very much, I don’t remember most of their names.

I just watched all the Group 2 Solos on YouTube:

My 2 female front runners, Maddie and Jurnee, did not have their personal best performances of the season, imo, but still thought they were really good. I did not love either song choice. I thought Maddie either lacked confidence or could have supported her higher notes and falsetto better. Thought the judges gave Jurnee some great advice to go along with the praise about her vocal ability. I’m just glad she hasn’t peaked yet. Her moment will come.

For me, the breakthrough performance of the night was from Marcio Donaldson. Vocally it was flawless. If I was going to sell someone on the clarity of Bose headphones, I would let them listen to his performance on my pair. It really was perfection. He has officially hit my radar with this performance. Mara was also really good.

Agree about Mara and Marcio having good nights. I felt really old when Luke said he had never heard “Brand New Key.”

OK, I watched the ACM Awards and am just catching up to AI on YouTube …

Alyssa’s tone is just so beautiful. Mara was great .Caleb butchered that song, one of my favorites. Blech. Ugh.

Ron and that Robyn song. Ugh. I didn’t really like it … and yet I just feel all the feels with him.

Marcio … loved it! Man, I love me some Inseparable. And Ada on Feeling Good. I love the classics.

OK, I’m surprised how much I liked Garrett. He is so easy on the eyes. Oh, wait. This is a singing competition.

I found Maddie’s pants and hair and whole persona distracting. It was like Hee Haw meets Woodstock. Not a great vocal.

Shannon … I don’t know. I love that song so much. I mean, she’s no Adele. Who is? But I felt it.

I’ve never gotten Amelia. Imagine Dragons didn’t change that.

Just no, Effie.

Jurnee didn’t have a great night.

Anyone watching the ACM Awards tonight, besides Youdon’tsay? The lead guitarist for Devin Dawson is a family friend. Devin was nominated for New Male Vocalist of the Year.

Back to Idol— some other notables:

I thought Ada Vox was incredible, once again. Also thought Alyssa had a nice performance. Liked but didn’t love Caleb but, with Country males underrepresented this season, he’s pretty much a slam dunk. And possibly Garrett, as well, by default.

I love Devin Dawson!

That will tick me off if Caleb doesn’t sing well tomorrow and still gets through just because they are down to one country dude. In case y’all don’t know what that song is supposed to sound like, look up Thomas Rhett, who often leaves me in tears.

I continue to just be connected with Alyssa and am hoping she has a good duet to make the cut. I do see where you all say you wish she had waited a year or two - of course, who knows how long this version of AI will be around…

Last night was the first time I really saw Jurnee and I thought she was fantastic - so natural! If that wasn’t her best performance she must be really, really good!

Garrett - he is so sweet and cute. Also hoping for a good duet for him to make the cut and have a little more time.

Ada is something else - in a good way. But I have to say, I feel like she is suited for Broadway -not pop music. I think she will be around for awhile.

I didn’t care for Mara - she seems fake to me. Forced.

I get a little tired of people who come on stage and have to BELT out a song - every inch of the song - like the woman who sang the Heart song - louder isn’t always better! That said from someone (me) who is not a huge ballad person.

I do really like Bobby Bones. No nothing of his history or story. Seems very relatable to the contestants.

I enjoyed so many of the performances tonight. This is turning out to be a good season! I would have picked a few different people to go through, but I’m definitely excited for the next phase.
