American Idol closet fans

Hindoo, that’s a good question but he certainly didn’t win a singing contest!

was votefortheworst around that season??

I recall thinking Taylor Hicks had a certain charm, but was appalled when he actually WON the thing.

swimcatsmom - VFW was around that season. They ended up “picking” Taylor near the end - IMO because they saw the writing on the wall and wanted to be right  That season was just…strange. I think they got the final four completely backwards (except now there are some allegations of lyric plagiarism wrt Daughtry) and the only album of the whole season I bought was Elliott’s.

^^^ You keep making me smile, DukeEgr, when your say you bought the “album”! Many of us old geezers here really did buy the vinyl stuff “back in our day”.

Quick digression- My s and his GF were looking at our old collection of 33 1/3’s, stashed in a closet. They had a blast looking at that stuff, and were really amazed by the “Woodstock” album. Has anyone here used the turntable thing that converts albums to digital? Do you like it?

OK, back to AI. I must admit, I have not been a big Carly fan, but thought she did a good job with Jesus Christ Superstar. As an aside, I read in today’s paper that some people think her tatoo is of Amy Winehouse!! She clarified that it is of a geisha, but that they hadn’t had time to color it in yet. I guess she’ll have a bit more time now… before the summer tours and other music gigs and recording contracts begin.

jym - there are some pretty good USB-driven turntables out there that will digitize vinyl though the reviews have been pretty uneven. The only problem I have encountered is that the needle isn’t the greatest and so there’s some snaps, crackles, and pops in the end result. And unlike vinyl - where the random little patter of static can be an endearing quality of The Old Days - they will always happen at exactly the same time so it not only gets old, the specific pops get embedded in your brain as a part of the song! Mostly, I’ve just heard people go to iTunes or other sites to download freshly minted copies of their records…

I can’t figure out how they come up with these “theme nights.” I loved Neil Diamond when I was a kid, but why on earth should he be involved now? And ALW? If they want them to sing broadway, they should at least be free to choose good broadway.

A year or so ago they did a Barry Manilow night. It actually turned out to be pretty entertaining. I imagine a Neil Diamond night would be the same.

I guess I didn’t know that Idol’s target audience is middle aged women - like me. I thought they had a younger demographic. I would like to see them do more contemporary stuff, but I like a lot of the music that my 18 year old likes.

Yep, cartera 45, I’m in your demographic too. You make a very good point about having the contestants do something more contemporary–at least now and then, for goodness sake!

cartera, I absolutely agree. There are so many wonderful options in the musical theatre canon. My guess is that in their desire to appeal to the broadest possible audience, they chose ALW because chances are that many people will have seen, or at least heard of, one of his shows. The fact that most theatre-lovers do not consider ALW’s music or his shows very appealing probably didn’t even register on the AI producers.

I preferred it when each week was a different genre of music, without the ‘famous’ mentor. It made for better options for song choice and, in my opinion, was just more fun. I loved hearing favorite songs from the 60’s or favorite love songs, Gershwin songs, even country songs!, being sung by these young people. When they started the weekly mentor system, I didn’t find it nearly as appealing.

Is it true that most theater-lovers do not consider Andrew Lloyd Weber’s music appealing? Geez. That makes me out of the mainstream. I loved the music from Phantom and Cats. Jesus Christ Superstar, not so much. … I agree on the weekly mentor system vs. different music genres. The mentor I had the toughest time with was Dolly Parton. I enjoy her persona and sometimes her music, but a WHOLE segment devoted to her. I think not.

Count me in as a theater-lover who really appreciates ALW. My eldest really enjoyed the song by Syesha from Starlight Express. It was the very first show we took him to see when he was six. Still one of his favorites.

Syesha’s was my favorite performance this week. She’s absolutely made for Broadway.

time to bump up again.

As an aside, I bought tickets to see Neil Diamond this summer, yesterday. This will be an interesting night.

When dh told me early in our relationship that he liked Neil Diamond, I considered breaking up with him. Thankfully, I stuck it out and have come to appreciate ND.

I liked Jason’s rendition of “Forever in Blue Jeans.”

Liked Jason. Loved David C. Brooke - another ‘oh dear’ moment I’m afraid.

Well *that *was weird. Wonder what has Paula been smoking tonight?

Paula has certainly topped herself this time. My goodness. Awkward.

Paula is a bigger disaster than Brooke. Wow, she really is on drugs.
