Paul absolutely butchered the Ryan Adams song he did a couple weeks ago. That is one of the best songs on one of the best albums in years and he destroyed the song. It’s supposed to be a sad, heartbroken, melancholy song. It’s not a bubblegum dance song.

Google Ryan Adams - “Come Pick Me Up”. The first two links that pop up are the YouTube of Ryan Adams performing the song on Letterman and the YouTube of the studio version from the album Heartbreaker.

Idad, did you read the recap on TWOP? This is what they had to say about Paul and his Ryan Adams choice:

I have to admit that I found last night’s show the most entertaining since the finalists were chosen, but I’m always a little let down at this point in the season. None of them was truly awful last night but other than James, I wasn’t ‘feeling it’, as Randy would say. James’ performance to close the show put a smile on my face. Pia has the most beautiful and best vocals of anyone on the show but she needs to work on her performance skills. At times, though, I’m happy to see her just stand there and sing beautifully, when I think how awkward Haley and Stefano and Scotty looked in their attempts to ‘use the stage’. I was happy to see that Jacob returned to his big beautiful diva self last night. He was better than he’d been in weeks but still unlikely to stick around too much longer.

My bottom three would be Haley, Paul, and Thia, and I’d send Haley home.

Pia needs to lose the beauty pageant look and style. She will end up on a cruise ship - there are worse things BTW. I would love to give Haley a makeover. She looked uncomfortable in the shoes on the steps and it looked like she was wearing bike shorts. The blazer’s shoulder pads were ill fitting - she just needs to lose the Jerseylicious look. She is also going to fry her cords if she doesn’t stop pushing that gravelly sound. It’s showing up in her speaking voice already.

Haley was WAY better than before and Pia seemed worse. I like James and he’s so comfortable up there. Lauren annoyed me so much calling Ryan Seacrest “Peaches” over & over…I think I can’t forgive her even tho she is good.

I don’t get why y’all dislike Thia. I think she has the most beautiful voice. Agree on Scotty, but the judges keep harping “make it your own” and I think he is pressured to keep country-fying every song.

I thought they all did fairly well last night–there was no clear “loser” to me. It seemed everybody chose songs in the proper keys. I have never been a fan of Pia because when she tries to belt the high notes, it just sounds like screaming to me, but I thought she had her best performance last night. And she did look gorgeous. I didn’t like James as much last night as I have in the past and he always seems cocky to me. I never have liked Naima, either, but she did ok last night and she certainly is an entertainer. I don’t konw who should go home.

Wow! How could he possibly have been in the bottom 3? I’m not crazy about him but he was definitely a contender. I thought he was going to pass out when they told him to stop singing!

I really have no idea as to what guy it was, but if I was to pick one or two possibilities, I would say Paul or Jacob. I really think Jacob is the wrong guy for Idol, “all theater and no pop”. I didn’t think Paul was very good last night, either.

Really, thanks for not spoiling the show for us folks out West, but if anyone wants to PM me and tell me what happened, I’ll read it!

Wow, that reaction by Casey was priceless. What drama. I think going on first last night may have hurt him. I also think the judges need to differentiate their critiques more so that the top performers get the needed votes.

All right, it’s over for the west coast. Should we show restraint for those people in Hawaii?

Naah!

I guess everyone thought somebody else was voting for Casey…there were lots of people who were contenders for the one to go tonight. Thought that Stefano would be going, once it got down to 2.

West Coaster here… I leave this thread alone until it’s “time” (I guess this is where I use all my will power).

Not at all surprised that they saved Casey, altho surprised he was on the bottom and totally taken aback by his near meltdown when he was saved.

I agree that I think everyone thought that everyone else was voting for Casey. I haven’t voted, but I think I will from now on. I think Casey is overall the most talented - he seems like some kind of music genius to me. He may not have the best voice, but there is just something about him…

Haley - just not consistent; I haven’t seen anything from her I like
Thia - has a very mature voice that is beautiful; no stage presence
Naima - great performer, not very talented - she could become famous and make millions
Paul - he has a unique voice; I like him
James - I think he’s getting better
Jacob - great voice, definite genre
Pia - incredible voice, but no x-factor. She needs to step it up
Lauren - peppy and good voice. She seems immature and that is what is becoming annoying
Stefano - cute, but will not last to 5
Scotty - definite future in country music!

I was thrilled to see George backing up Jennifer Hudson - I loved him!

***Also, the mere fact that I can name all the contestants is not something I’m very proud of at the moment.

rom, I’m proud of you for naming all the contestants. :)

I agree with everything above, and I’m also glad they saved Casey, but his reaction on getting voted lowest, then his reaction when asked to stop singing, and then his reaction when saved was strange then stranger then just odd as the minutes went on. I think Jennifer looks while he was having his strange moments was a sight in itself, but I’m glad she scolded him in the end.
