American Idol's Final Season! Shall we watch together?!

Agreed that overall the contestants were not all that good last night. My favs were Dalton, Lee Jean, Tristan and the last girl at least had the energy.

They FLY through 12 contestants in one hour!

These duets are so much better than last week’s.

I missed last week. This is fun!

I am taping it right now, watching for kid to finish her homework. I thought the duets last week were only there to show off the talent from previous seasons. It had nothing to showcase the current contestants. I am looking forward to seeing if it improves.

My favorite is the Indian girl!

^^ Did she already sing? Must have missed that.

Kelli Pickler has a powerful voice.
I think it overpowered Tristan’s voice.

LOVED Jordin and Trent. Great song.

I’m enjoying this, mostly to hear the old idols. They are all so phenomenal. Chris Daughtrey, wow! And David Cooke, so good to hear them again and sounding even better.

Watching a little tonight to see whether my friends or I made it on camera.
One set of friends was at the idol exit, so got to high five many idols and made it on screen many times. OTOH, I can only see my hands clapping in the air. DH, who is taller, can be spotted in the crowd since he is wearing a red shirt.

It’s weird, I saw them all critique Shelby, whom I thought was phenomenal, and stood toe to toe with Constantine. Kind of makes me wonder if they had their minds totally made up before this performance and were looking for a reason to justify themselves. And the only reason I can see them to not let her go through (because she is one of the most talented), is because she is overweight. We’ll see what happens after the commercial break.

Don’t care for Trent at all. Can barely look at him when he sings, he shuts his eyes and puts his face into contortions when he sings, and doesn’t sound very good to me. Just kind of irritating. But I’ll bet he goes through and Shelby doesn’t. Oh well.

Yep, I knew it. Mono guy with the squished contorted face gets through over powerful singer who is overweight.
Sigh. They should realize by now that they haven’t had the best track record lately, putting through the more attractive people over the better talent. Which is why the show has lost it’s viewership! We can see pretty everywhere on tv, we want to see talent.

Rant over. :((

@busdriver11, at least you can’t accuse The Voice of pushing looks over talent, given its most recent winner!

I also thought Shelbie was great and that the critiques of her duet were oddly off-base. But unless @YoHoYoHo tells us that there’s a looong break in the show after the duets conclude while the judges debate things, I’ll remain convinced that the decisions about who stays and who goes are made before the duet segment even starts. I think the selection of Lee Jean, who practically disappeared off the stage during his duet with Daughtry, only proves my point.

Wasn’t Haley Reinhart fabulous? I enjoyed all the alums tonight, save Kellie Pickler, who is so much less talented than the rest and hit some real clunkers.

I was also pleased hearing the alums, so talented. I loved that they showed them when the finalists were picked and Chris Daughtey’s reaction, very cute.

We were surprised to see Jenn go through. I thought although quirky, she did not have as strong as performances as some of the others. Which makes me think that they think there needs to be a formula, a quirky, a country, a teen idol etc.

I was also surprised that Shelbie did not go through. She is the best of the country ones on the show. I also do not like Jenn’s voice. It makes my throat hurt to listen to her. My D, who has only watched AI when I’ve forced her over the years, was surprised that Haley didn’t win her season. I don’t even remember who did. She is great!

I totally agreed with the critique of Shelbie. She just didn’t fare well with that song.

I also don’t care for Jenn’s voice.

Haley is wonderful, but I thought she overtook both of her duets. I think their role is to help the contestant shine, not demonstrate your own chops.

busdriver, you say Shelbie is a victim of looks, but then you complain that the “mono guy with the squished contorted face” gets through. So is it looks or not? Trent reminds me of Joe Cocker in his odd presentation. I remember seeing him for the first time when I was young and thinking there was something wrong with him.

I figure they know who they want to go through after the first round and then the duets help them confirm or make them rethink. But, yeah, there’s a formula … young ones, quirky ones, heartthrobs, etc.

I know that sounds hypocritical, but to me, weird facial contortions are irritating, but not a matter of looks. Like Philip Philips had all sorts of bizarre contortions when he was singing, yet when he wasn’t, he was a very attractive young man. It was worth watching his performances because he was good, but I don’t find anything compelling about Trent.

American Idol has really lowered its standards of talent by often selecting attractiveness over talent. At least when left to the viewers, that generally isn’t the priority.

Totally agree about Trent- can’t look at him!

I think they made a mistake sending Shelbie home. She is a great performer and is clearly near the top in terms of vocals with this year’s group. I don’t have any idea if it had to do with her looks but I think they were dead wrong with that decision.

Does anyone know what happens next week? With 14, I thought I heard something about the judges narrowing the field further then the public gets to vote? I didn’t catch the explanation, if there was one.

Shelbie was on The Voice too. It was such a bad song choice for her, but it really showcased Constantine. I don’t know who picked the songs.

I think they had to pick a song that the former idol had either sung on the show when they were contestants or one of their hits.
